Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.

LAKEWOOD — They were coming down the home stretch at the Colorado state track & field championship meet.
The annual track extravaganza reached a crescendo on May 17 as some of the most prominent racing events in the state took center stage.
Fort Collins-area teams emerged with a team title plus a pair of runner-up finishes. Meanwhile, a Windsor sprinter swept a pair of 4A dash championships and led the Wizards to a relay win, joining Fossil Ridge.
Here’s how day three of state track & field went for Fort Collins-area athletes, plus some notable scores and results for Northern Colorado and statewide competitors.
Fossil Ridge clinches 5A team title
The SaberCats will be champions! There’s still one event to go, but the Fossil Ridge girls team has run away from the field to clinch the 5A team title.
It’s the first track title in Fossil Ridge’s school history and the first Fort Collins team to win a 5A track title since 2016.
— Kevin Lytle Windsor girls 4×400 closes meet in styleWhat a way to go out.Through a driving rain, Windsor grabbed the 4A girls 4×400 relay title with a furious finishing kick from Kiana Cumings for her third state title of the day.Maya Brasch started the Wizards off strong, Madelyn Von Tersch kept them within striking distance, Reyligh Hess closed the gap and Cumings sealed the deal. Not only did that seal a relay title, but it also propelled Windsor into a runner-up 4A girls team finish.
— Chris Abshire Heritage Christian nearly nabs 2A team titleThe Eagles came close to a truly special team championship in Class 2A.Wiggins led by 2.5 points entering the 2A girls 4×400 and Heritage Christian needed to beat the Tigers by three spots to secure the crown. It looked like the Eagles had it down the home stretch but settled for 5th, with Wiggins taking 7th to hold on 69-68.5.This would have been a special one for HCA, a school that has dealt with tragedy this year. Classmate and one-time Eagles track teammate Sophia Case passed away in a spring break car accident in March.
— Chris Abshire Fossil Ridge 4×100 relay breaks throughAfter some remarkably close calls for Fossil Ridge at this state meet, the SaberCats finally sit atop the podium.Fossil’s relay crew of Ellia Anderson, Katie Feldman, Ava Hurlbut and Addyson Smith blew away the field, winning the 5A girls 4×100 title in 46.62 seconds. Eaglecrest was runner-up in 47.35.The SaberCats’ time was also a new school record, the fourth time this season the Fossil girls have set a program best or lowered their own mark.
— Chris Abshire Windsor’s Kiana Cumings wins another state titleMake it a double-dose of gold for Kiana Cumings! The Windsor star made it a two state titles in short order. Not long after winning the 4A 400, Cumings was back on the track as the top speed in the 200. Cumings won the 4A 200-meter title in a personal best time of 23.96 seconds. Holy Family’s Claire Tannehill was second at 24.37 seconds.Windsor’s Maya Brasch was third in the race at 24.44 seconds.Double the gold: Windsor sprinter stands tall in Colorado 4A state track sprint sweep
— Kevin Lytle Another dramatic finish with Addyson SmithFossil Ridge’s Addyson Smith has been right in two of the best races of the day, but finished just short of first in each. After finishing second in the 5A 100 by .01 earlier in the day, Smith finishes second in the 5A 200 dash as well. Like the 100, Heritage’s Zona Welling just edged past Smith at the end.Welling won in 23.96 seconds with Smith second at 24.08. Two tough finishes, but also silver medals that are helping push Fossil Ridge toward a 5A team title.– Kevin Lytle Fort Collins runners with strong distance finishesIn the 5A boys 1,600 run Fort Collins’ Cadel Ruthven had a solid fourth-place finish in a time of 4:14.12. ThunderRidge’s Ben Lee won in 4:09.44.In the 5A girls 1,600, Fossil Ridge’s Tatum Berg had a big final kick to finish fourth in a time of 4:55. Emily Cohen of Cherry Creek won in 4:52.07.Some other recent notable finishes for locals:Poudre’s Gery Lockman followed his third-place in the 400 with a fourth-place in the 200 in a time of 21.46 seconds.Heritage Christian’s Kayla Cuckler finished sixth in the 2A 200 in 26.54 seconds– Kevin Lytle Team scores update: Fossil Ridge title chasingHere’s the midday (12:30 p.m.) team scores updates:Girls 5AFossil Ridge 61Eaglecrest 49Mountain Vista 41Boys 5ACherokee Trail 48Eaglecrest 40Mountain Vista 37Girls 4ANiwot 118Air Academy 46Windsor 43.5Boys 4ANiwot 55Roosevelt 36Thompson Valley 35Girls 3ACoal Ridge 64Classical Academy 61.5Berthoud 46Boys 3AClassical Academy 65Resurrection Christian 50Berthoud 45Girls 2AWiggins 56Heritage Christian 52.5Buena Vista 44Boys 2APeyton 39Sedgwick County 35.5Golden View Classical 32Girls 1AIdalia 62Merino 55McClave 43Boys 1AHaxtun 51.5Plateau Valley 50Springfield 47– Kevin Lytle Windsor sprinter Kiana Cumings wins state titleIt’s golden for Windsor star Kiana Cumings!Cumings won the 4A 400-meter dash in a time of 54.92 seconds, winning in a comfortable margin over Rylee Klatt of Mead in 56.38 seconds.Cumings finished second in the 4A last season.
