With almost all teams from La Jolla High School, The Bishop’s School and La Jolla Country Day School opening league play last week, the boys and girls basketball and boys soccer teams had largely negative results, though highlights included Bishop’s girls basketball’s first win over Cathedral Catholic in six years.Here’s a recap, plus a look at this week’s schedule.Girls basketballBishop’s After the Knights started the season 10-1, they had gone 2-4 since Dec. 28. However, they had a chance to regain momentum in a home game Jan. 15 against a strong Cathedral Catholic program — the fifth-ranked team in the CIF San Diego Section.In a packed home gym, the Knights got 17 points from junior Ayla Johnson and nine rebounds from freshman Maya Mahone in a 51-41 victory.“We came in with the focus of bringing the energy and understanding [that] when we work together as a five, we can be successful,” Bishop’s coach Paris Johnson told The San Diego Union-Tribune after the game. “This was a very good win for our girls.”It was the Knights’ first win over Cathedral Catholic in their six meetings over the past six seasons.Bishop’s (13-5) next plays at home against Montgomery (14-5) at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21. That will be followed by a home matchup against Francis Parker at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24.La Jolla Country Day Coming off their first double-overtime game since 2009, which ended in a three-point loss to Centennial, the Torreys hoped to have an easier time at home against Clovis on Jan. 18.However, Country Day ended up in overtime for the second straight game.Both teams scored eight points in the first OT period, sending the game to double overtime. It was the first time Country Day has played in back-to-back double-overtime games.This time, the Torreys were able to prevail by three points, 66-63.Juniors Mei-Ling Perry and Atlanta Bass-Sulpizio led Country Day in scoring, with 22 and 17 points, respectively. Perry also collected 18 rebounds.Next up for Country Day (11-6) is Pleasant Valley (15-4) in the MLK St. Mary’s Stockton Showcase in Northern California at noon Monday, Jan. 20. That will be followed by a home game vs. St. Joseph Academy at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, and a tournament game against Ontario Christian at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.La Jolla HighSimilarly to the La Jolla boys basketball team, the Vikings girls entered last week with a strong record at 13-6, one of their best starts to a season in recent years.However, also like the boys team, three games last week presented a big test.First, La Jolla hosted High Tech San Diego on Jan. 14, and the Vikings led at halftime. However, they couldn’t recover from High Tech’s 18-8 third-quarter run and lost 54-51.Three days later, the Vikings hosted Academy of Our Lady of Peace in their third Eastern League game of the season. The matchup wasn’t close, with the Vikings having their worst game of the season in a 46-22 loss.On Jan. 18, La Jolla played Desert Christian Academy in the Santa Fe Christian MLK Showcase. Desert Christian won a low-scoring game, 34-26, as La Jolla picked up its third straight loss.La Jolla (13-9) next plays at Hoover (9-9) at 5:45 p.m. Jan. 21, followed by a visit to Mount Carmel at 7 p.m. Jan. 25.Boys basketballLa Jolla HighThe Vikings entered last week as the strongest team in La Jolla, sporting a record of 14-2 on the season.On Jan. 14, the Vikings traveled to Mira Mesa for their second City League game of the season. Mira Mesa maintained a comfortable lead throughout and won the game 69-53.Three days later, La Jolla hosted Point Loma, and the game was close from start to finish, coming down to the final seconds. Point Loma got the win, 49-47.In their last game of the week, the Vikings traveled to Clairemont on Jan. 18. Clairemont’s strong defense propelled a 62-49 victory, marking La Jolla’s third consecutive loss.La Jolla (14-5) hopes to snap the losing streak this week at home against Madison (14-6) at 5:45 p.m. Jan. 21. That will be followed by a home game against Coronado at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 24.La Jolla Country Day Coming off three straight wins, Country Day started Coastal League play last week with games against Santa Fe Christian on Jan. 15 and Francis Parker on Jan. 17.In the first game, the visiting Torreys narrowly lost to Santa Fe Christian after a back-and-forth game, 58-56.Country Day then traveled to Francis Parker and maintained a small lead in the first half before eventually widening the advantage and winning 59-48.Country Day (11-10) next hosts crosstown and league rival Bishop’s (12-7) at 7 p.m. Jan. 21. After that, the Torreys will play at Maranatha Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28.Bishop’s The Knights also opened Coastal League play last week in a home game against Maranatha Christian on Jan. 14.The game was close from start to finish, with Maranatha Christian holding a one-point lead at the start of the final quarter. The Eagles got some clutch baskets down the stretch and handed the Knights a 48-45 defeat.Bishop’s (12-7) next plays on the road against La Jolla Country Day (11-10) at 7 p.m. Jan. 21 and at home vs. Francis Parker at 7 p.m. Jan. 24.Boys soccerLa Jolla Country Day Country Day started Coastal League play last week with two games, first at home against Maranatha Christian on Jan. 15 and then at Orange Glen on Jan. 17.In the first game, the Torreys found themselves down 1-0 at halftime, but a strong second half led by juniors Ben Chodorow and Duje Lulic, who each scored a goal, propelled Country Day past Maranatha Christian, 2-1.Two days later, Orange Glen got the better of Country Day, winning 2-1. Junior Michael Schwartrz scored the goal for the Torreys.Country Day (3-5-2) next plays on the road against Escondido Charter (5-4-2) at 7 p.m. Jan. 22 and at home vs. Bishop’s at 6 p.m. Jan. 24.La Jolla HighThe Vikings started City League play with a home game against Patrick Henry on Jan. 14.Patrick Henry scored four goals in the first half, and though La Jolla got on the board in the second half and found its rhythm on defense, the Vikings lost 4-1.On Jan. 18, La Jolla rebounded at home with a 2-0 victory over High Tech San Diego.Next for the Vikings (2-3-6) is a home game against Madison (7-5-1) at 6 p.m. Jan. 21 and a trip to Coronado at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23.Bishop’s Bishop’s opened Coastal League play last week with two games.On Jan. 14, Escondido Charter held the Knights scoreless in winning 1-0.Three days later, Bishop’s hosted Pacific Ridge and suffered a 5-1 defeat, the Knights’ worst loss of the season.Bishop’s (4-4-1) will try to bounce back at crosstown rival La Jolla Country Day (3-5-2) at 6 p.m. Jan. 24. After that, the Knights will be at home against Maranatha Christian at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29. ♦
