Opening at the 157-weight class, Edisto was able to get a technical fall to take an early 5-0 lead. Bridges Prep would win the next six matches by pinfall building a 36-5 lead. Edisto won the next three matches, three by forfeit, before Bridges Prep closed out the match with a pin at the 138-weight class.
Despite having to forfeit three matches, Bridges Prep scored seven pinfall victories in a 42-39 win over Edisto. With the win, the Buccaneers advance to the Class A/AA Lower State finals.
“(Bridges Prep) got us by a few points, lesson learned,” Edisto head coach Melvin Wright Jr. said. “We had two starters get sick which forced a lot of young bodies (freshmen) out their today. It was a learning experience.”
“The boys were hungry,” Hagan said. “Nobody believed in us, but they left it all out on the mat. It’s just the fourth year of the program and we’re heading to the Lower State finals…it’s a dream.”
“We’re sad, but we know it’s not the end,” Wright said. “There’s more to life than wrestling, it’s all about what we do going forward. We’re going to stay positive and continue to get after it.”
