Cole, Ranum, and Walker are the WyoPreps Athletes of the Week 5

The WyoPreps Athletes of the Week, presented by Premier Bone and Joint Centers, turned in outstanding efforts on the softball diamond and in field events from track and field. After last week’s performances, April 28 through May 4, 2025, Campbell County junior Sadie Cole, Campbell County senior Raynor Ranum, and Kelly Walsh senior Landon Walker were chosen for the weekly honor. Cole turned in a dominating week in the circle for the Camels, while Ranum and Walker set records at the Wyoming Track Classic.

WYOPREPS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK WINNERS 5-8-25

Girls Winner

Cole helped Campbell County to a 6-0 record last week on the softball diamond. They swept Kelly Walsh in cross-pod games and then went 4-0 in the Eastside Softball Tournament in Wheatland and Torrington. That included victories over the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 ranked teams in the state. Cole went 4-0 in the circle. She threw 20 innings and allowed only five runs on 11 hits in the four games. Cole struck out 44 batters and walked only 13. Two of her performances were shutouts, against No. 3 Wheatland and No. 2 Cheyenne East. She struck out 13 in a 3-0 victory over the Thunderbirds. She also had 12 strikeouts against Kelly Walsh and ten versus Central. In limited appearances at the plate, Cole was 4-8 with one double, one RBI, and five runs scored. She also walked twice.

WyoPreps caught up with Ms. Cole to chat regarding her effort last week. Cole said it was a big week for the team and her. She discussed her most effective pitches, the game that stood out most, her love for softball, and other key items that made last week a great week.

Boys Winners

Raynor Ranum swept both throwing events at the prestigious Wyoming Track Classic, which is a best-of-the-best individual track meet. One of the top throwers in the state this year, the senior won the shot put at the Classic with a toss of 64-04. That set a new meet record. He won by nearly 13 feet over the runner-up. Ranum also took first in the discus. His best toss was 160-09, and he won that event by over 11 feet.

Raynor spoke with WyoPreps about his performance. He said the key was that everything came together in a good way. Ranum described his mindset, his technique, how he got into throwing, and more.

Landon Walker also had a big day last Friday at the Wyoming Track Classic. He won the long jump and the triple jump. What stood out was his leap of 49-07 in the triple jump, which was a new all-time best mark in state history. It does not set a state record, because those must be set at the state championships later this month, but no one has ever jumped farther from Wyoming at the prep track and field level. Walker won that event by over three feet. His best mark in the long jump was 23-1.50. That made it a two-for-two day at the Classic.

Walker reflected on his day with WyoPreps. He described how good he felt entering that track meet, how he was a bit surprised by the distance since it came after his win in the long jump, what his focus is for both events, and more.

Congratulations to Sadie, Raynor, and Landon on being selected as the Premier Bone and Joint Centers WyoPreps Athletes of the Week!

At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.

AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine (WAGM) – Washburn High School is on a three game home stretch this week.

Yesterday the co-op teams hosted the Southern Aroostook Warriors.

We’ve already seen Damien DuMont hit well for his team with runners in scoring position, this hit will bring one runner home, and advance another runner to third base, runners on the corners for Washburn.

A couple balls in the dirt would score one run and bring DuMont to third base.

Gabe Espling at the plate for the Beavers with a runner on third.

A base hit would bring that run home and Washburn is hot to start the game.

Southern Aroostook’s defense comes up big to cap off a big inning for the Beavers.

The Warriors trying to get some offense of their own going, this walk would load the bases for Southern Aroostook.

Trafton Russell was walked so one run scored, Daniel Kuindersma at the plate, a rip to the outfield, two runs will come to the plate to score, Southern Aroostook with runners on second and third.

Ethan Collier would drive home another run, 20 total runs scored in this one, the Warriors come out on top 12-8.

Onto the softball fields in Washburn, Hope Curry is going to get the party started for the Warriors with a hit to the outfield, she’ll turn that into a double in the top of the 1st.

Olivia Ellingwood will drive in the first run of this game, getting the scoring started early, 1-0 Lady Warriors.

Brielle Taveras was able to reach first through a walk, and eventually made her way over to third.

A pass ball would give Washburn their first run of the game in the bottom of the first.

Top of the second… Bethany Schmidt with a chance to drive a runner home and she will do exactly that… Alexa Hersey will be the runner to cross the plate.

The Washburn/Easton Lady Beavers put together their best offensive performance with 16 runs.

But the Lady Warriors come up with 28 to beat the Lady Beavers at home.

Southern Aroostook is off to a hot start at 3-1

Head coach Paul Sherman said, “We don’t really worry about that too much, we mostly enjoy playing the game, being together. We mostly measure it by are we hitting the ball hard, are we catching it. You only control what you can do and then there’s also what they are but they enjoy playing the game and enjoy being together, we’re learning and we’re happy about that.”

Southern Aroostook’s next games will be a doubleheader in Fort Kent Saturday at 11 and 1.

The Northern Maine Moose boys lacrosse team is into the win column.

The Moose met with John Bapst on Husson’s fields last night.

They won 8-5 behind Isaiah Ervin’s 3 goals and 3 assists, Colton Simoes’ 2 goals, Brayden Drake, Eli Brown, and Damion Stuart each scored once.

Head coach Adam Simoes said “A slower start than we wanted but once we gained momentum the team worked well together today. When multiple players have success that’s a good sign. “My offensive players clicked today. We did a lot of reps in practice and it paid off. I hope this gives my offensive players some confidence in their skills. Our defense did well tonight holding shots to the outside and protecting Carter. A great group effort.”

The Lady Moose hosted Bangor, the team put up a good fight against the Rams.

The team lost 18-6 behind four goals for Tori Ervin.
