“The soccer team messes around a little bit more — we all joke with each other a lot, but we like to work hard,” Kay said. “Both teams, when we need to, we lock in and get it done.”

But there is a reason the group of Gators have nicknamed him “Hockey.”

Kay believes he may follow in his father’s footsteps and help treat people with spinal issues.Remember his nickname? It’s not a debate.“No matter what Landon does he holds himself to a higher standard than anyone else,” Captain Shreve soccer coach Greg Palmer told the SBC Advocate. “It doesn’t matter if it’s soccer, baseball, hockey or any of the other sports he plays. Landon is one of those kids that is athletic and able to enjoy any sport.”

“It’s a lot of work, but it pays off a lot,” Kay said. “To win a district championship (in soccer) and to be 14-0 (in hockey), when you go home, you have to have a smile on your face. Life is good.”

Eventually, Kay will resume his position on Captain Shreve’s baseball team. He’s not ready to focus on what comes after that.

And Kay will probably be good at all of it.“I’m enjoying my high school life and I’m going to hate it when it ends,” he said.

A chance with the Boston Symphony or play tor the Stanley Cup?

The ice. The pitch. The diamond.Oh and Kay, a senior, is an accomplished violinist, too.

Less than 72 hours ago, Kay led Shreveport’s high school hockey team to a pair of victories in the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League. Shreveport is off to its best start in program history, 14-0, and Kay does more than his share.“My parents kind of forced me into (the violin) when I was 4 years old, but I really enjoy it,” said Kay, who was invited to play with the Shreveport Symphony in the eighth grade. “Plus, there is some money involved, so that helps.”

Is the vibe different as he goes back and forth from team to team during the week?

“In soccer, (Kay) would be classed as a utility player — someone who can play anywhere and still get the job done,” Palmer said. “I don’t know how he makes all of the sports practices and still does well in the classroom, but he somehow makes it happen.”

How does Kay find time for it all?

Unquestionably, Kay’s path beyond Captain Shreve will include a lot.“I couldn’t have imagined the season would go like this,” Kay said. “For it to be my senior season and for it to go the way it has, it’s amazing. I want to have a ring on my finger by the end of the season.”Shreveport hockey has clinched the No. 1 seed in its league and will aim for the program’s first playoff victory next month. The search for a perfect regular season will conclude with a doubleheader March 2.Throw in some gigs with his violin and the calendar gets even crazier.

A lot of high school athletes would love to be in the process of chasing one championship right now. Captain Shreve’s Landon Kay is a key member of two teams in search of titles. And when one of those pursuits ends, he’ll jump into a third sport.

Wednesday, Kay and the Gators will host a second-round playoff game against Brother Martin (5 p.m.).

“The MRIs and stuff intrigue me,” Kay said. “I’d like to help people live longer and healthier when they’re in pain.”Hockey is No. 1.

Kay not only leads Dallas’ Varsity Bronze Division with 40 points, seven power-play goals and six game-winning goals, his 29 goals lead all Metroplex varsity divisions — a total of 35 varsity teams.
