Mason Honga, a sophomore at Menahga High School, ranked first in Minnesota in the fall 2024 InvestWrite competition, a national writing contest that “challenges students to apply their knowledge of the stock market and personal finance in a real-world context.”

According to a news release, InvestWrite is an extension of The Stock Market Game, a free program offered since 1992 in Minnesota by BestPrep.

Menahga High School business teacher Randy Thompson said he’s been utilizing the game in his classroom for the past several years.

“It’s wonderful, especially for northern Minnesota,” he said. “It’s all realistic. It’s all simulated online. Everything is real, except the money. You start with the money – $100,000 – and you get to play with it however you want to. It’s real time, by the minute, if you day trade, and then mutual funds at the end, at 3 p.m., just like in real life.”

Tovin Sannes-Venhuizen, program manager for The Stock Game, said, “Mason demonstrated an impressive grasp of risk tolerance and communicated his ideas in a thoughtful and articulate way. We’re incredibly proud and excited to see how his understanding of financial literacy will prepare him for a successful life.”

Last fall, Honga “invested” in stocks, like Apple, Amazon, Tesla, Nvidia, through the game. He wrote, “I believe that I was pretty diversified with my stocks. I invested in some tech companies, automotive companies, shoe and clothing companies, some fast-food companies and food chains, and some beverage companies.”

Sannes-Venhuizen said Honga’s 8% gain “is very respectable in the professional world. The 200% to 300% gains you see on social media is not realistic in the long-term. Eight percent is a much more realistic and safer bet. Most professionals are happy if they get 5% over a year, so 8% over four months is very impressive.”

In Honga’s winning essay, he wrote, “I feel that The Stock Game is a great way for students to learn about money and the real world. Instead of beating the market, just be the market, and being diversified is the way to success.”

He’s the son of Jeremy and Tenelle Honga.

University of Brighton student Daniel Parmenter is using game design to make play more inclusive – developing an accessible gaming project that supports players with motor disabilities. 

His work will be featured at the University’s 2025 Computing Degree Show – an event celebrating students’ final-year projects in fields such as AI, immersive gaming, software development, and cybersecurity.

The event offers students the chance to share their pioneering work with industry professionals, academics, and the wider student community – celebrating the creativity and innovation of the next generation of tech leaders. 

Unlike most games, which rely on physical input via keyboards or controllers – which can be challenging for those with limited mobility – Daniel’s project integrates alternative control methods, including speech recognition, head tracking, and even blinking detection. 

These features enable players to navigate menus and interact with the game entirely without physical movement, offering a more independent and empowering experience for users with motor disabilities.  

While many games now include accessibility features like visual adjustments for colour blindness or customisable controls, there are few options for players who cannot use a controller or keyboard at all. Daniel’s project strives to create a more inclusive gaming experience by tackling this accessibility challenge head-on.  

“Before university, I had no experience in game design. Over the past four years, I’ve gained hands-on experience with game engines like Unreal and Unity, and worked on a diverse range of genres, from VR horror games to FPS titles.

“This project has given me the opportunity to use these skills to create a game that addresses a real-world need, and I’m excited to make gaming more accessible for people with disabilities.” 

His motivation stemmed partly from staff at Brighton, who inspired him to focus on accessibility. The result is a game that not only pushes technical boundaries but also addresses a clear gap in the gaming industry. 

Alongside his studies, Daniel completed a placement year at the Brighton-based software company Cyclr, where he honed his coding and project management skills by developing tools to help users manage data across systems. Now that he has finished university, he has returned to working full-time at Cyclr. 

At the Computing Degree Show, attendees will be able to interact with Daniel’s accessible gaming demo, as well as explore a wide range of other innovative projects, from cybersecurity to game design. Students will present and demonstrate their work, welcoming the opportunity to explain their projects and answer questions.

  3. Second Runner-up: Students from B V Raju Institute of Technology, Telangana, for their project on Enhanced Battery Management Using Digital Twin Technology.
  4. Special Jury Prize: Team from Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Erode, for their project on AI-powered Video Moderation.

TORONTO — Artificial intelligence is here to stay, at least in the world of sport tech, according to one industry expert.

The Future of Sports Lab announced the selection of 10 innovative startups for its incubator program on Thursday. Cheri Bradish, an associate professor at Toronto Metropolitan University who is the founder and managing director of the school’s sport tech accelerator, said more applications to the program involved AI than any other round of pitches in its 10-year history.

“It’s ubiquitous in the sense that it’s everywhere, and we are now determining how we can best utilize it in a tech sense, and other kind of layers, throughout business units, throughout the sport tech industry,” said Bradish in a phone interview on Thursday. “I think it’s going to be an art and a science because there’s so much human element that’s relied upon in sport, both on the business and performance side.

“But I think to make better predictions on some of the recovery technologies we’re looking at, it’s obviously playing the lead role.”

Three of the 10 startups who have partnered with the Future of Sport Lab have AI as part of their business plan.

Calgary’s HooperIQ is the first AI-powered basketball IQ training platform, helping athletes master decision-making through personalized quizzes, film analysis and automated game breakdowns.

Elev8 & Perform of Markham, Ont., is wearable technology that boosts cardiovascular health, accelerates recovery, and enhances performance using quantum nano biomaterials and AI-powered smart imaging and analytics.

Lubu Technologies, based in Los Angeles, is developing AI-powered smart insoles that transform any shoe into a gait lab, helping athletes prevent injuries, optimize performance, and refine technique.

Bradish noted that this year’s class also includes startups led by people with a background in sports.

“Each cohort is a special class that defines itself in certain ways,” she said. “What we have in this group, which we’re excited about, is a number of high-performance athletes.

“We have leaned into embracing a culture of supporting athlete entrepreneurs. That is something that we are excited about, and I think it also definitely brings some really unique skills and competencies and assets to the group.”

Toronto’s CoachThem, a digital coaching platform created by former NHL players Mike Weaver and Robb Tallas, streamlines practice planning with intuitive tools that drive player development and coaching efficiency.

Iron Lady Golf, also from Toronto, was founded by PGA professional Lindsay Knowlton. It seeks to create an empowering community for women with over 30,000 participants reached through inclusive, confidence-building golf experiences.

Ottawa’s MOMentum was founded by Olympians and Paralympians and supports elite athlete mothers with financial grants, advocacy, and community resources to ensure family planning is never a barrier to success in sport.

All of the startups are at different stages of development but are expected to take strides over the Future of Sport Lab’s eight to 12 week curriculum.

“We’d like to help them accelerate the growth of their business,” said Bradish. “Some we know are already out there, either raising capital or building new partnerships on that customer journey.

“That’s the kind of curve. We like to come in and help them accelerate their business.”

Coordle, from Baltimore, is transforming group travel and sports tourism, by offering a centralized platform that connects teams and participants with local businesses.

Toronto’s FanMore is a loyalty and rewards platform helping teams engage the untapped 90 per cent of fans not in stadiums, creating new revenue streams for sponsors and organizations.

Shake, from Washington, D.C., is a free-to-play platform delivering fan experiences through sports and entertainment event aggregation.

The Playbook, out of Minneapolis, is an award-winning mental health platform for athletes and teams that tracks stress, well-being, and resilience, providing actionable plans for athlete wellness.
