Elk Lake counters with three athletes who were also named to the All-Region team last season.Delaware Valley’s swim program honored former All-Region standout Damian Baranowski, who died tragically this summer in an accident while riding his bicycle.One of the most anticipated swim meets of the Lackawanna League season highlights the first week of action after the new year.The family also plans to establish a scholarship in Damian’s name.Angel Agosto is one of the top divers in the Lackawanna League and finished fifth at last season’s district subregional meet.Rebecca Oakes won a gold medal in the 100-yard butterfly at last season’s District 2 Class 2A Championships and finished 29th at the PIAA meet. Eva Kaszuba won a silver medal in the 100 breaststroke and a bronze in the 50 free at the district meet, Sophia Galko won a silver in the 100 butterfly, and Ella Schofield won a bronze in the 100 breaststroke.The Lady Warriors have been impressive, winning their first three meets, including a 100-85 win over Delaware Valley.Scranton Prep, which has won 73 straight dual meets, visits Elk Lake in a girls matchup Wednesday afternoon that features talented athletes, who have reached the podium and competed at the state level.Four Classics were honored last season on the Times-Tribune All-Region team.West Scranton’s top swimmer is Roy Ayala. He won the 200 individual medley. This season, he is joined by his brother Jordan Ayala.An experienced and accomplished group of swimmers leads Scranton Prep.

Stars hit the pool

Baranowski was a four-time All-Region selection. He captured gold medals in the 200 freestyle and the 100 freestyle and led the Warriors to the Lackawanna League and District 2 Class 3A championships as a senior in 2020.Brynn Warriner was a district champion in the 50 freestyle and finished 30th at the PIAA meet. Allison Grosvenor and Hannah Howell each won medals at the District 2 Class 2A championships.The Classics have dominated in their three meets to start the season, winning by an average margin of 74.7 points per meet.In addition, Elk Lake has depth in diving. Sadie Smith, Lily Rauch and Taylor States have swept the top three places against Dunmore and Valley View in the event. A sweep in the event will account for 13 team points.All three were champions last season at the District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional meet. Casper won the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Williams won the 50 free.

Abington Heights is 3-0 and is led by Jason Casper, Derek Williams and state-medal-winning diver Ethan Horutz.Elk Lake challenged the Classics last season but ultimately lost, 109-61, at the University of Scranton, where the teams do not compete in diving. This season, with the meet at Elk Lake, diving will be contested.In addition to the Scranton Prep at Elk Lake meet, the Abington Heights-West Scranton boys meet on Thursday will also feature All-Region talent.The team held a moment of silence before the 200 freestyle, and all proceeds raised at the concession stand and through raffle ticket sales were donated to the family’s memorial fund that will be used to hold a bike ride and 5K in his memory this summer.
