‘I was Kyle Busch’s boss at Joe Gibbs Racing and NASCAR star was complicated’

Kyle Busch is undoubtedly a NASCAR legend, with more wins (232) across the top three divisions than any other driver throughout history. Busch is currently representing Richard Childress Racing in his 23rd Cup Series season, but spent 15 “complicated” years at Joe Gibbs Racing, according to team president Dave Alpern.

While Busch has been a regular winner throughout his career, he failed to win a Cup Series race in 2024 , which marked his first winless season in NASCAR. The drought has continued into this season , and the 39-year-old has even contemplated retiring at times due to his struggles .

Busch won 56 Cup races over his 15 years with JGR, and was a two-time champion, and was labeled a “generational talent” by Alpern, who couldn’t deny his brilliance. However, Busch was also known for his animated behavior, which led to the nickname ‘Rowdy,’ and Alpern admitted that he was complicated to deal with at times.

“Kyle was complicated in some ways,” Alpern said to NASCAR.com . “Kyle had a switch that would flip, and it was at some point before the race started. … I would often go up to Kyle and do a picture, but he was not my first driver that I would go to on the grid because he had already flipped the ‘Rowdy’ switch on. And he was just zoned in, locked in. During the race, it was the switch.”

When winning races, Busch gained a reputation for his emphatic celebrations, as he would consistently snatch the chequered flag and wave it after burning out his tires on the track. Busch also had a villain persona as he would taunt his critics, something he loved to do.

“I think it was just through the theatrics of after races and a guy who liked to play with the haters, if you will,” Busch said. “The haters are motivators. So when you’re able to go out and win — and win a lot — you have this step.

“You have this character that you can play into and you can talk all the smack you wanna talk. And sometimes, that was to the haters. There was a lot of those back then and they didn’t really like those very much.

“But when you had Rowdy Nation as your footprint and your backbone to be able to go out there and water-cooler talk on Mondays, they were able to go to bat for you.”

While Busch’s relationship with JGR seems historic, he was never their first option as the team battled to retain Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2008. Busch and Earnhardt Jr. traded places at JGR, with the latter assuming the vacancy at Hendrick Motorsports.

DON’T MISS

Busch, aged just 22 at the time, said that he was told by Hendrick Motorsports: “Hey, you don’t really fit here. You’re not really our personality that we’re looking for at Hendrick.”

Alpern also admitted that they didn’t want to lose Earnhardt Jr. but accepted that Busch could be a good replacement. “You hate to say he was our second choice, but at the time, he was,” Alpern said. However, the wins started coming, and that helped JGR accept Busch’s characteristics.

“Kyle is a generational talent,” Alpern said. “Talent kind of breeds tolerance — so you tolerate a little more depending on how talented a person is. And that was the relationship with Kyle. But I think Kyle, again, generational talent for sure.”

Legendary NASCAR crew chief Rodney Childers made a dramatic first appearance at Wilkesboro this weekend, the home of the All-Star race, a month after his dramatic departure from Spire Motorsports. The 48-year-old parted ways with Spire after the partnership with the team as Justin Haley’s crew chief didn’t work out.

Childers’ quick exit from NASCAR sent shockwaves through the sport, considering his extensive experience following 11 years spent with Stewart-Haas Racing before its closure and just shy of a year on Spire’s books after signing a multi-year deal. “I know this is a shock. But also know that not everything works out perfect all the time. That’s how life works,” Childers wrote on X. “This was just one of those things that just wasn’t working for either of us. I appreciate my time at Spire, working with JH and the entire 7 team. We did a lot of good that is yet to be seen, and I wish them the best in the future.”

A month after his departure from Spire, Childers showed his face at this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series All-Star race at Wilkesboro. According to The Sporting News, Childers was the center of attention after spending 30 minutes in the NASCAR hauler.

Childers said he wasn’t in trouble and wanted to see his former drivers, teams, and crew chiefs. “It’s just, you know, a lot of respect here,” Childers told The Sporting News. “I have so much respect for this sport, the other crew chiefs, car chiefs, mechanics, reporters and broadcasters.

“There isn’t a part of this sport that I have ever disliked. I miss being on the pit box and leading a group. The thing I miss the most is being the leader — controlling a meeting and all those things. But yeah, the phone has been pretty quiet, and I wish I could say different, but it’s been pretty quiet.”

Childers was seen at NASCAR’s All-Star race at Wilkesboro

One of Childers’ signature accomplishments was winning 37 races and a championship with Kevin Harvick at Stewart-Haas Racing. He’s likely looking for a new landing spot with the shot at creating more NASCAR history.

“At the same time, I also think it was for the best to let things calm down a little bit,” Childers added. “I’ve been able to spend time and enjoy some things with (wife) Katrina and the boys, spend Mother’s Day with my mom but I needed to get back to the race track. I wanted to see this group, the teams and officials, because I’ve had some people reach out but there’s just not a lot out there this time of the year.”

Still, Childers never left motorsport alone entirely in his absence from NASCAR. He linked up with Harvick on his CARS Tour operation. The duo already enjoyed great success.

DON’T MISS:

“I mean, the biggest thing is just when Kevin asks me to do something, I do it,” Childers continued. “You know, everyone knows how much he’s done for me over all the year and he changed my whole life.

“You think about the Cup races we won and our relationship is just something that people don’t come across often in this sport. He asked me to help them out and it’s just been really great working on some things over there.”

POLE-WINNING PRESS CONFERENCE

BRAD KESELOWSKI, No. 6 Solomon Plumbing Ford Mustang Dark Horse – IS THIS A MOMENTUM BUILDER AND IT APPEARED ENTRY AND EXIT OF PIT ROAD WERE CRITICAL TO YOUR LAP. DID YOU FEEL THAT WAY? “It doesn’t hurt. Being on the pole feels really good, especially to win the pole by that much. It’s just a total team effort. This event, this format pushes you to your limits from a driver perspective, team perspective and pit crew. I stuck my part. That felt really good. I knew I stuck the entry. I was like, ‘That’s gonna be good if it’s not a speeding penalty.’ And then on the exit I was like, ‘I may have left a little on the table.’ It was really hard to tell, but it all came together for just an excellent run. The pit crew, they didn’t try to be heroes. They just gave me a really solid stop and Jeremy Bullins and the team gave me a car that was pretty fast and, like I said, they just gave me the ball and said, ‘Go play.’ And that’s what we did.”

YOUR CAR HAS BEEN DUBBED THE PIRATE SHIP WITH ECU COLORS WITH A LOT OF SOLOMON PLUMBING EMPLOYEES HAVING GONE THERE. HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?  “My wife is an ECU grad. It’s super cool. We’re on the other side of the Carolinas, but still there are a lot of ECU fans out there and it’s good to be able to recognize them. It’s really good for Solomon Plumbing. I feel so bad for them. Danny Allor, the founder, passed away a couple weeks ago and it was a real shock. This is the first time they’ve been on our car since that happened. Their whole family is planning to be here, so it’s really cool to give them something to be joyful about.”

HOW CHALLENGING HAS IT BEEN FOR YOU THIS SEASON AND HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO PUT ANY KIND OF MORAL POINTS ON THE BOARD TODAY? “I’m not gonna say it’s been easy for me to weather the storm the last few months, but part of the juice is going through the struggles because it makes you appreciate the good times. Yeah, we’ve had some struggles, but there’s a lot to be optimistic about. I knew it wasn’t gonna be a walk in the park when we started this year with all the changes that we had. I didn’t expect it to be as big of a struggle as it has been, but that said, I see a lot of pieces that are coming together and this obviously demonstrates that. But even beyond today I feel a lot of pieces that are coming together and bode well for us in being able to make a really strong run here from here on out for the 2025 season. I’m not losing my cool. I’m putting ourselves in position and our team is putting ourselves in position to grow and hopefully go out and win races. We’re gonna have a shot to win this race come Sunday.”

HOW VITAL IS WINNING THE HEAT AND BEING ABLE TO START UP FRONT AND HAVE THAT TRACK POSITION? “Yeah, we saw that last year. I think Joey Logano led almost every lap – all but one. I don’t know which one, but it sure wasn’t after he pitted. This race really lends itself to track position for a number of reasons, particularly because the field size is so small and the way the race runs out the leader generally does not catch the back of the field, so that puts a premium on being the leader that doesn’t necessarily ever have a chance to wash back out, so starting on the pole here, among many other races, but here specifically is a significant advantage.”

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE FROM THIS TRACK GOING FORWARD? “I think this needs to be a points racetrack. I’d like to see the All-Star Race most likely return to Charlotte. That’s my personal opinion. I think the Charlotte racetrack, particularly since it only has one race on the oval, I think that’s a miss for our sport. It’s a great racetrack and puts on some of the best racing, so it would make sense to me if we were to revert back to that and make this a season race, and probably get rid of a race like the Roval or something like that.”

WHY GET RID OF THE ROVAL? IT’S CREATED SOME MOMENTS. “Has it really? I look at the stands and there are more fans that come to the oval race and better ratings too, than come to the Roval races. I thought that’s what we judge the sport by. I’m very strong about the Roval has got to go.”

HOW SIGNIFICANT IS SOMETHING LIKE TONIGHT AFTER EVERYTHING THAT’S HAPPENED THIS SEASON? “I feel like we’ve had other bright spots. This one is one that’s tangible. It’s visible outside of our own team circle, but they build up. They build momentum. They build positivity inside the group that manifests itself in a higher level of teamwork and craftsmanship just naturally. I think the team is a pretty resilient group, but I don’t care who you are as a team we all need some positive reinforcement and encouragement and there’s nothing negative about today.”

YEARS AGO YOU HELPED WITH THE FORMAT OF THE ALL-STAR RACE. THIS YEAR IT’S A RANDOM CAUTION. IS THERE MORE THAT CAN BE DONE FOR THIS RACE OR SHOULD THIS JUST BE A RACE? “I think it’s always a great opportunity to do something fun. I hate to put borders on it. I just think that it should probably be back at Charlotte.”

IT SEEMS THERE HAVE BEEN MORE PENALITIES THIS YEAR. IS THAT A GOOD THING FOR THE SPORT IN THAT NASCAR IS CRACKING DOWN OR IS IT BECOMING A THING WHERE IT’S TOO MUCH? “I don’t have a great answer for that. There are things to like about penalties. There are things not to like. You just want the penalties to make a difference. The whole goal of penalties in general is to create a level playing field and manage the competition for the teams so that it’s cost effective and for the fans so that the winner demonstrates some kind of distinguishing level of ability better than someone else, and not out of bounds with respect to things that we don’t necessarily value. So, it’s important to have penalties. It’s also very important that those penalties align with those goals. I think for the most part they do, but I’m not close enough to any of the other teams outside of our sphere to always know that.”

WHAT WAS THE COMMUNICATION LIKE IN REGARDS TO THE IDEA OF A RUN WHAT YOU BRUNG TYPE OF RACE? “I wasn’t aware of it being a run what you brung. I think that might be a bit oversold. I was aware of some rules being opened up, but I was not aware of any rule being opened up that we thought was significant enough to justify an expenditure. If it was take a plate off an engine or something to that degree that wouldn’t have cost us anything and would have moved the needle, I think we would have been generally fairly supportive, but, for the most part, it was things that I’m aware of at least, I think I’m limited to that sphere, it was all things that I’m not entirely confident would have moved the sport forward.”

The NASCAR Cup Series All-Star weekend action continues at North Wilkesboro Speedway today, Saturday, May 17, with the All-Star Race Heats 1 and 2.

Qualifying on Friday night set the starting lineups for the two heats, with the finishing order from Heat 1 set to determine the inside row for Sunday’s All-Star Race, and Heat 2 the outside row.

After qualifying, Brad Keselowski will start out front in the first heat race, with Alex Bowman and William Byron also set to start inside the top three.

In the second heat, meanwhile, Christopher Bell will start out front after finishing second in qualifying on Friday night, with Chase Briscoe and Joey Logano set to start second and third, respectively.

Whilst there are no points up for grabs this weekend, there is a $1 million prize for the winner of Sunday’s main event, meaning drivers should have plenty of motivation to finish well in Saturday’s heats and gain the best possible starting position for the All-Star Race itself.

With that said, let’s get into all of the timing and TV details you need ahead of today’s action, as well as the full starting lineups for both All-Star Race Heats.

From 32nd on the grid to the top of the leaderboard, Spire Motorsports pulled off a stunning upset at North Wilkesboro Speedway, leaving the facility with 100,000 reasons to celebrate.

During Friday evening’s NASCAR Cup Series All-Star Mechanix Pit Crew Challenge, Michael McDowell’s No. 71 team delivered a lightning-quick pit stop. As a result, they edged out Trackhouse Racing’s No. 99 squad, clocking in faster than their 12.6-second effort to secure the top spot and the grand cash prize.

From Underdogs to Top Dogs: Spire Motorsports Claims $100K at NWB

NASCAR’s All-Star weekend is off to a flying start. Prior to Friday’s Pit Crew Challenge, the Spire Motorsports No. 71 team sat 32nd out of 36 in this season’s pit crew rankings. Yet, despite the odds, the crew stole the spotlight, outgunning every other crew to bag the $100,000 cash prize.

Clocking in at 12.587 seconds, the stop included everything from entry to exit, launching them to the top over Trackhouse Racing (No. 99) and Front Row Motorsports (No. 4). McDowell was the 15th driver to take it to the track during Friday’s NASCAR All-Star Open qualifying, during the three-lap run, where crew pulled off the the stunning feat during the three-lap qualifying run.

That stop held strong against the 18-car NASCAR All-Star Open field, but many wondered if they could persist against the 20 teams competing in the NASCAR All-Star Race qualifying session. The No. 71 winning crew comprised Brandon Chapman (Fueler), Max Marsh (Front Changer), Ty Boeck (Rear Tire Changer), Luke Bussel (Tire Carrier), and Dax Hollifield (Jackman).

The crew bested 12.600 seconds and 12.669 seconds of No. 99 and No. 4 squad to clinch the challenge. Meanwhile, Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 11 crew, which made the headlines earlier this year in Darlington with a 9.650-second 4-tire pit stop, recorded a time of 14.460 seconds.

Everything felt like a dream for Jackman Hollified, who stayed up late till 2 a.m. working out the strategy. Reflecting on the win, he said, “We’re all rookies. We have half our team, this is our 12th race. So we’ve been working hard for the past year, just doing the little things right, and once you do enough of those, things are going to turn out right, you know? We just work on getting better each and every day, and it showed today.”

Meanwhile, Travis Paterson, crew chief of No. 71, noted, ” We put a lot of effort into this, whether it was our setup or these guys coming to the shop to check it, and all we said was we wanted to repeat what they did in practice because it was an eight-three (8.3-second stop), and that’s what they did. Awesome on them. So badass for these guys.”

The Cup Series action will resume on Saturday evening for the All-Star Heat Races at 5:10 p.m. ET. Fans can catch the action on FOX Sports or tune into MRN Radio/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Don Davis Race Cars (DDRC), Hughes Motorsports, and Doug Foley Jr. are proud to present the new DDRC Bracket “Eliminator” Roadster

SALISBURY, NC — Don Davis Race Cars (DDRC), Hughes Motorsports, and bracket racing driver Doug Foley Jr. have teamed up to create the ultimate new weapon for bracket racers — the DDRC Bracket “Eliminator” Roadster — and early production is already underway.

Engineered with direct input from championship-winning racers, the DDRC Bracket “Eliminator” Roadster blends proven craftsmanship, driver feedback, and real-world racing experience to deliver consistency, stability, and round-after-round repeatability — the true keys to winning in today’s toughest bracket racing environments.

DDRC Bracket "Eliminator" Roadster

“This isn’t just another roadster — it’s a race-winning platform, engineered with racers’ input to meet racers’ needs,” said Scott Anderson, owner of Don Davis Race Cars. “Every detail, from chassis setup to driver feel, has been developed to deliver confidence, predictability, and results.”

Built specifically for the demanding, high-pressure world of sportsman drag racing, the Eliminator features precision 4-link chassis geometry and a lightweight strut front end for maximum stability, adjustable driver ergonomics for superior comfort and control, and engine placement optimized for ideal weight distribution and balance. From a carbon fiber dash and interior panel options to a gas strut-assisted body lift for quick maintenance, every element of the chassis is engineered with the racer in mind.

The Eliminator is built on a 4130 Chromoly Roadster chassis with a 105-inch wheelbase and a 42-inch track width. As shipped, it weighs approximately 2,150 pounds with a Big Block Chevy (BBC) engine. The rear housing is a custom Moser Engineering DDRC 4-link design, and all chassis tabs come pre-welded for quick and easy setup.

DDRC Bracket "Eliminator" Roadster

Feedback from elite racers has played a central role in shaping the Eliminator Roadster. Jim Hughes, owner of Hughes Motorsports and a championship-winning driver, shared: “The Eliminator has everything a driver wants and nothing they don’t. It’s the car you’d build if you had the time, tools, and thirty years of mistakes to learn from — and they already did that work for you.”

Meanwhile, Doug Foley Jr., a proven bracket racing standout, added, “When you’re making pass after pass with money or championships on the line, you need a car that’s predictable and stable every single time. That’s exactly what the DDRC Bracket ‘Eliminator’ Roadster provides — confidence.”

Production is underway at Don Davis Race Cars’ facility in Salisbury, NC, with first deliveries expected soon. Interest has been strong — racers serious about elevating their programs are encouraged to contact DDRC early to reserve a build slot.

About Don Davis Race Cars (DDRC)

Founded in 1985, Don Davis Race Cars (DDRC) has earned a national reputation for craftsmanship, innovation, and performance in the world of sportsman drag racing. For 40 years, DDRC has been trusted by racers competing in Super Gas, Super Comp, and bracket racing classes who rely on consistency, precision, and proven quality to win rounds and championships.

Now led by Scott Anderson, a former NASCAR fabricator, DDRC has expanded its capabilities using advanced design tools, modern manufacturing techniques, and a customer-first approach. From chassis design and welding to composite fabrication and full vehicle builds, DDRC’s work reflects a deep foundation of real-world racing experience.
