Doha, Qatar: The Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) honored India’s inaugural Paralympic gold medalist and Padma Shri recipient Muralikant Petkar at the esteemed Ashoka Hall in Qatar. A genuine emblem of perseverance, Petkar’s remarkable tale – transitioning from service in the Indian Army and suffering eight bullet wounds during the conflict to securing gold for India at the 1972 Paralympics – continues to motivate countless individuals.

Nandini Abbagouni, ICC’s Head of Cultural Activities, greeted the distinguished guests and attendees, while ICC Vice President Subramanya Hebbagelu expressed appreciation to Petkar for being an exemplar to Indian youth. Additional members of the ICC managing committee, presidents of affiliated organizations, senior community figures, and numerous representatives from the Indian diaspora were also present for the event.

During his stay, Petkar engaged with the Indian diaspora, recounting his experiences and inspiring the youth to strive for excellence with unwavering resolve. Joining him was his son, Arjun Petkar, who is actively involved in fostering young sporting talent. He also provided valuable advice, urging attendees to support and mentor emerging athletes.

The father-son duo visited the 321 Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, where Petkar’s exceptional accomplishments are prominently displayed. Expressing deep appreciation to Qatar’s Olympic and Sports Authorities, Petkar acknowledged the privilege of being recognized internationally for his contributions to the realm of sports.

Their visit made a lasting impression, celebrating the essence of sportsmanship, tenacity, and motivation.
