Schultheis mirrors his crew’s enthusiasm, “The results are up and down we are in our early stages as a team the communication and the starts, and how we manage everything. For now it is good to see we can keep up with everyone for speed, racing and results.”Rieger who sailed with Tim Fischer before, explains, “I had seen Richard racing before in the junior fleets and saw the potential and so said to him ‘What about it?’ and here we are….I was hyped about this, looking for the right guy, and saw the potential and said ‘let’s go and fight for a medal in 2028. And so it started.”After a brisk, breezy start to the 54 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca by FERGUS Hotels on Monday which gave the Olympic sailing classes a test from the first start guns of the showcase Mallorcan regatta, today the athletes were afforded a couple of hours to regroup and find their marks before the renowned Bay of Palma sea breeze built on cue.As it is the very start of the new Olympic cycle many of the bigger nations have full squads competing here, Australia have seven duos, France seven, GBR eight and there are 11 pairs are from Germany.54 Trofeo Princesa Sofía Mallorca

01 April, 2025“The conditions were great today, we got a couple of ‘keepers’ and had a lot of fun. We had 10-12kts, real champagne sailing. Now we have such a solid squad now in France with Erwan and Clement the world champions, there are a lot of young guys pushing hard now, so no one’s place is secure. It is great training. We were in Vilamoura for a lot of time and we have the ‘Young Old’ group as we call them and the ‘Young Young’ groups, and we consider ourselves just ‘Old’” grins Amorros, “This our ninth Sofia, we have done a lot of eighth overalls and want to do better this time….and seventh won’t be enough!”The event is part of the Sailing Grand Slam 2025, along with the Semaine Olympique Française, the Dutch Water Week, the Kieler Woche and the Long Beach Olympic Classes Regatta. After five qualifying races for the 49er skiffs it is the newly formed young German duo Richard Schultheis and Fabian Rieger who head the 91 strong fleet. The Sofia title is wide open with none of the Paris 2024 Olympic medal winners here.Reiger concludes, “Seeing where we stand we see the potential but everyone is just getting warmed up so we need to push hard together.”

MARQUETTE — The women’s track and field team at Northern Michigan University has been named a 2025 All-Academic Team by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
And three Wildcat seniors have earned individual academic recognition, too.
To earn the team award, its cumulative team grade-point average had to be at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, and NMU’s was at a sterling 3.44 GPA as the Wildcats’ team has earned this honor in each of head coach Jenny Ryan’s 11 years at the helm.
Northern’s trio of seniors earning NCAA Division II All-Academic Athlete honors were Skylar Grubb, a zoology major from downstate Highland; Ahna Larson, a biology major from Gladstone; and Ellyse Wolfrath, a nursing major from Hortonville, Wisconsin.
There are a few more criteria for athletes to meet to earn the individual award.
They include a cumulative 3.25 GPA through the end of the semester of competition, be academically eligible for the NCAA Championships, and for transfer or graduate students, only use grades earned at their current institution.
The student-athlete has to have participated at the indoor or outdoor nationals in an individual or relay event, or finish among the top 50 in individual events as listed by the Track & Field Results Reporting System website, or be on one of the top 35 relay teams by TFRRS.
A lengthy list of individuals honored in Division II include several from other GLIAC schools — 26 from Grand Valley State, 10 from Wayne State, four from Wisconsin-Parkside and three from Saginaw Valley State.

Tennessee committed NCAA violation because of another school’s error

Inaccurate information in the transfer portal database led the Tennessee women’s track and field team to unknowingly commit a minor NCAA violation, records show.
Early in 2025, a transfer athlete competed for UT in an indoor track event after her eligibility had been certified by the university’s compliance staff relying on data in the transfer portal database.
But upon further review, UT determined that the athlete’s previous school had entered inaccurate information into the database. She had already exhausted her eligibility, so her participation violated NCAA rules.
That was the only Level III NCAA violation reported by UT in the first half of 2025, according to a document obtained by Knox News through a public records request.
Level III infractions are minor breaches of conduct. They are common and routinely reported by athletic departments at every school. They almost always result in low-level penalties or an internal review, which was the case in this instance.
After discovering the track athlete was ineligible, UT self-imposed an institutional review of its eligibility verification process to account for errors made by other universities in the transfer portal database.
Neither the athlete nor her previous school were identified in UT’s report.
The SEC and NCAA did not impose any penalties because UT’s compliance staff followed protocol based on the information it had. Plus, UT coaches believed the track athlete was eligible because they relied on false data in the transfer portal database.
The athlete was not permitted to compete further because she had exhausted her eligibility.

Men and Women’s Teams Finish Second on World Stage

Hungary’s men’s water polo team claimed the silver medal at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships after a 15–13 defeat to Spain in a thrilling final at the OCBC Aquatic Center.
Despite a strong fight through three quarters, the team was unable to hold off a powerful Spanish surge in the final period, where the reigning European champions outscored them 6–3. Spain’s Álvaro Granados and Bernat Sanahuja proved unstoppable, each netting five goals.

Hungary’s offense was led by Gergely Burián with three goals, while Vince and Vendel Vigvári, Dániel Angyal, and others contributed, but the team could not maintain momentum in the closing minutes.
This marks Spain’s fifth consecutive win over Hungary this year, including a group-stage comeback victory.
The two teams reached a draw (5–5) after the first quarter, but Spain’s efficiency in power plays (five goals from seven man-up situations by halftime) ultimately made the difference.
Hungarian goalkeeper Kristóf Csoma had several standout saves, and the match saw dramatic moments, including a rare field-player block by Balázs Manhercz after Csoma’s exclusion late in the game.
The men’s result followed another silver for Hungary, as the women’s national team finished runner-up on Wednesday after a loss to Greece in the final. Despite a valiant effort, the Hungarian women were unable to overcome the Greek defense in a tightly contested match.
With two silver medals, Hungary solidified its status as a global phenomenon in water polo, even if both teams fell just short of the gold.

Head coach of the men’s team Zsolt Varga added that the players gained a wealth of experience during the World Championships, which could help guide their work going forward.
It is tough to win a final like this, especially against such an experienced opponent like Spain. These matches are always decided by the team that makes fewer mistakes, and today, we made more. As close as we are to them, this is the current reality. They are a much more seasoned team,”
said the coach, who led Hungary to gold at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, reflecting on the final.

Sun Devils’ Track and Field’s 2 Huge New Additions

The Arizona State Sun Devil Track and Field team is coming off of a good season! The excitement continues for fans as the coaching staff is adding two new members.
Milton Mallard and Adam Meyer each bring a unique set of skills, viewpoints, and techniques to the team that should help ASU track and field continue their success.
Let us start with Milton Mallard. Mallard has tons and tons of experience in track and field as a coach. Mallard has been on the staff of teams that have competed in the Big 10, Big 12, and SEC conferences. Very similar to new Associate Swim Coach Derek Schmitt, Mallard is someone who connects with players very well.
Current ASU Track and Field Head Coach Dion Miller said that he thought Mallard’s best ability was his recruiting skills and being able to land top talents at the various schools he has been at.
Speaking of the schools he’s been at, before joining ASU, Mallard was the associate coach for the USC Trojans and the Texas A&M Aggies. He was with the Trojans for only a year, so the bulk of his time as an associate coach has been with the Aggies.
Mallard made a huge impact on the Texas A&M Track and field team. The athletes Mallard helped coach got those accomplishments: 46 NCAA-All Americans, 27 Conference Champions, 7 USATF National Champions, 6 World Champions (including 2 gold), and 9 Olympic medalists.
Now, of course, Mallard was not the only one who helped the players, but he did work a lot with the athletes, so he should get a good amount of credit. What impresses me is how the athletes under Millard excelled in a wide range of events. It demonstrates that he can help coach athletes in developing versatility.
Mallard will join the ASU Sun Devils as an associate coach, marking a significant move for the team. It is exciting that ASU was able to land a coach with Mallard’s skill set.
The next coach is Adam Meyer, who will be the assistant coach for the track and field program. Meyer has a different background compared to Mallard, as this will be Meyer’s first stint as a coach. Meyer was actually a former athlete at ASU, and one that current head coach Dion Miller coached.
Meyer’s background reminds me of ASU wrestling recruiting coach Michael McGee. Both are former ASU athletes who quickly became coaches. Coach Miller described Meyer as a respectable and hard-working person
What I like about both hires is that they bring different viewpoints but share the same goal. Both Millard and Meyer are coaches with a strong connection to their athletes. However, their different backgrounds will help bring different viewpoints and teachings to the team.
Please let us know your thoughts on Millard and Meyer joining the ASU Track and Field coaching staff when you like our Facebook page when you click right here.
