It is with humility and hope for the future that I announce my candidacy for Prattville City Council District 6. My name is Jackie Nix, and I am both honored and energized by the opportunity to serve our city. I am committed to championing the voices and needs of every resident of District 6.

I am the daughter and granddaughter of coal miners from eastern Ohio’s Appalachian hills. I grew up surrounded by hay fields and cows and spent most of my childhood at my neighbor’s farm. My blue-collar roots instilled in me the value of hard work, self-sufficiency, responsibility, and community.

I followed my passion for animals and agriculture, attending Virginia Tech and Clemson University where I earned Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees, respectively, both in animal science. Throughout my career I have served in roles in the government, private corporations, non-profit organizations, and am currently a small business owner. My uniquely diverse past experiences give me a broad perspective and equip me with the practical skills and collaborative spirit needed to be an effective city council member.

I moved to Prattville 25 years ago from North Carolina with a husband and toddler in tow. I chose this beautiful city because Prattville had the very best school system in the River Region and education is of utmost importance to me. The husband didn’t stay, but I did. I survived my abuser and then I thrived. I raised my neurodivergent son in our community and have been here ever since.

As a single parent, I’ve managed time constraints, tight budgets, and tough decisions.  Single parents don’t get to opt out when challenges arise. We ALWAYS find a way. My experiences as a single parent and domestic abuse survivor have revealed a level of resilience, grit and determination that even I didn’t know I had.

I have been an active parent volunteer throughout my son’s school years. I chaperoned many field trips – a highlight was when the kids traded me for beads at Fort Toulouse’s Frontier Days. I famously brought a goat to the 2nd grade class for show and tell. I was also active in supporting youth sports such as karate, little league baseball, Youth Lions football and YMCA wrestling. When my son entered junior high, I was an active booster supporter and volunteered my photography skills providing photos for the team and parents. This continued in high school, even after my son received season-ending injuries. I wasn’t just active on the field; I was there behind the scenes as an officer for the Quarterback Club for 2 seasons and an officer for the Take Down Club for 2 seasons. I was team mom for the wrestling team and helped organize meals at tournaments. But even amid all of my son’s sports commitments, I was an avid softball player. I played in local rec leagues and in state and regional tournaments for many years. I only quit after my son was seriously injured playing football.

I stand before you not just with ideas, but with a commitment to listen. Your voices matter—and I believe that solutions to our most pressing challenges are best found in open dialogue and shared efforts. Throughout my campaign, I have been going door to door speaking with residents in District 6 listening to their hopes, concerns, and ideas for our city’s future. Transparency and accountability will guide every decision I make.

My platform centers on three core priorities:

  • Inclusive, Responsive Government: I believe that city government should reflect the diversity and values of our community. I will work to make city hall more accessible, improve communication between residents and officials, and ensure that everyone feels heard and respected, regardless of background or circumstance.
  • Investment in Public Education: I will work to put together a task force to creatively obtain adequate funding for the facilities needed for our overcrowded schools. Moreover, I want to develop partnerships and long-term plans to fund the operation of our schools beyond building construction. Our school system is the basis of our community. We simply cannot allow it to fail!
  • Smart Municipal Growth: I am committed to work in conjunction with the city planning committee and others to respect the city’s master plan and fix traffic and zoning imbalances between east and west Prattville. I will also carefully consider future development as it relates to  existing or planned infrastructure.

I know that no single city council member can accomplish everything alone. That is why I am committed to building coalitions, forging partnerships, and empowering residents to take the lead on the changes they want to see. I will prioritize transparency and open communication, keeping you informed and involved at every step.

My campaign is powered by neighbors—by you. Whether you are a lifelong resident or new to our city, your perspective matters. Together, we can build a city that reflects our shared values: opportunity, inclusion, stewardship, and hope.

Thank you for considering me as your representative for District 6. I look forward to working together to write the next chapter in our city’s proud story.
