DOVER, Del. (AP) — Joey Logano’s first NASCAR Cup Series start — before he would drive for heavyweight owners such as Joe Gibbs and Roger Penske — came in New Hampshire for a short-lived team called Hall of Fame racing.
Set to make his 600th career start, the youngest driver in NASCAR history to reach that milestone, the 35-year-old Logano has constructed a Hall of Fame career.
Take a look at the resume: three career NASCAR championships, a Daytona 500 victory, the youngest driver to win a Cup race, 37 career victories, and seemingly tethered to the No. 22 Ford for Team Penske for as long as he can race.
“At first glance, I said, ‘Well, it’s just starts,‘” Logano said. “But then when you start thinking about it, to be able to be around in a sport as an athlete competing at a top level for 16-plus years, and hitting 600 starts, it’s pretty incredible to have a career that long.”
Logano will be 35 years, 1 month, 26 days old when he hits No. 600 on Sunday at Dover Motor Speedway. He’ll top seven-time NASCAR champion and Hall of Famer Richard Petty by six months. Consider, only three previous drivers among the 33 others in NASCAR history were in their 30s when they hit 600 starts.
Logano has also topped the massive expectations set for him when he entered the sport as a teenager hyped as NASCAR’s next great driver. He entered NASCAR with the nickname “Sliced Bread,” as in, the best thing since, and navigated a slow start to his career to blossom into one of the best over the last 13 years at Team Penske.
He’s now married with three kids — his Instagram bio notes he’s a “3X NASCAR Champion” and “3X father” — and is considered a team leader at Penske and Ford.
“I grew up in front of everybody. All of us change over the years as you grow up,” Logano said. “Life comes at you and you evolve and keep going with it. Everybody, when you were 18 years old to 35 years old are some of the biggest changes in your life happen in that period of time. Getting married, having kids — that’s the biggest change you can ever have in your life, I think — but I did all of this in front of everybody.”
Logano qualified for his first career Cup start on Sept. 14, 2008, at New Hampshire on car owner points, because rain washed out qualifying. He started 40th and was penalized only 39 laps into the race for taking the jack with him as he exited pit road. He finished three laps down in 32nd place in the No. 96 Toyota for Hall of Fame Racing, essentially on loan from Joe Gibbs Racing to get some experience. The two teams even agreed to move JGR’s Home Depot sponsorship to Hall of Fame’s car for the 18-year-old Logano’s first race.
“I didn’t think it was a big deal making my first start,” Logano said that first day. “I was ready to go as soon as we started.”
He wasn’t necessarily ready for the big time.
Logano was pegged with enormous expectations to replace Hall of Famer and three-time champion Tony Stewart in 2009 for Gibbs.
Just a teenager, the enormity of the ride combined with Gibbs’ impatience made for a brief run at JGR. Logano did win his first race — also at New Hampshire, in 2009 — but won only one more time before Gibbs cut him loose after the 2012 season.
The timing worked out for Logano.
Penske needed a driver and 2012 NASCAR champion Brad Keselowski urged his boss to sign the 23-year-old Logano, convinced a change of scenery could do wonders for his career.
Logano made the most of his Penske lifeline and is now the only active three-time champion in NASCAR and one of only 10 drivers in history to win three or more titles.
He spent the week headed into Dover — where he flipped eight times on the concrete track during a scary 2009 incident in a second-tier race — hobnobbing with the sports world’s brightest stars at the ESPYs and he got to yuk it up with guest host Jelly Roll on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Petty is the only driver to win his 600th career start and he would make 1,184 overall in Cup, one of many NASCAR records he holds. Logano might not catch The King in total starts — but the driver who has never missed a race over his full-time career is in no rush to slow down.
“I would be an idiot to think you can be competing at the top level into your 50s,” Logano said. “What athlete has ever done that? Something changes at some point, but, right now, I still feel as fresh as ever. I feel as sharp as ever. I’m driven as much as ever. I still care. I still get emotional about things, so that shows me I care a lot. With those factors still there when the end is, I don’t know yet. I don’t know.”
The Tys have it as final four is set for the In-season Challenge
NASCAR is down to its version of the final four.
The midseason tournament that pays $1 million to the winner pits Ty Dillon vs. John Hunter Nemechek and Tyler Reddick vs. Ty Gibbs in the head-to-head challenge at Dover.
The winners face off next week at Indianapolis. Reddick is the betting favorite to win it all, per BetMGM Sportsbook.
“Did John Hunter change his name yet,” Reddick quipped.
Nemechek has a career-best six top-10s and is 20th in the standings in his second full season at Legacy Motor Club. Nemechek — who drives for Jimmie Johnson, who won a record 11 times at Dover — enjoyed trash-talking Dillon this week from, of all places, the carpool lane.
Their young children go to the same school, and the families have become friendly.
“The running joke between us is that they are boyfriend-girlfriend and they’re going to get married one day, the way that they walk around the racetrack,” Nemechek said.
Hey, maybe a $1 million could help pay for the big day.
NASCAR seeded 32 drivers for the first In-season Challenge, a five-race, bracket-style tournament that mirrors the NCAA basketball tournaments.
“I think it’s really cool from a millennial perspective, from a younger generation, it’s neat to be able to bring something in the sport that hasn’t been done before,” the 28-year-old Nemechek said. “It kind of gives you something to race for even if you’re not racing for the win.”
Legacy has yet to win a race, or even contend in many, since Johnson signed on at the end of 2022 and eventually became majority owner. Nemechek said Johnson has balanced many roles, that includes the occasional race, and was committed to making Legacy a championship team.
“We joke around about his legacy 2.0 being a team owner and hopefully we can go in and win 83 races and seven championships for him,” Nemechek said.
Odds and ends
Denny Hamlin is the betting favorite to win at Dover, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Hamlin has two career wins at Dover, including last season. He’s trying to win the first July race at Dover since the track’s first one in 1969.

Nascar McCoy visited Ole Miss on his birthday (March 22) and that visit made an impact on his recruitment. At the time, schools like Auburn, Georgia, Miami and Texas A&M were higher on his list, but when he saw practice, spent time with the coaches and got another feel for Oxford, the Rebels moved up his list.
The three-star safety out of Buford (Ga.) then took an official visit to Ole Miss in June and he has committed to the Rebels over the Bulldogs and the Hurricanes.
“Ole Miss really made a later move for me,” McCoy told Rivals. “They have always recruited me and they recruited me hard, so after the official visit, they moved up a lot for me. Oxford is a great place with great people and it is a small town like Buford. It reminds me of home. Oxford is a small town, it is a loving place and it just feels right for me.”
Wes Neighbors, Pete Golding and Lane Kiffin all played a role in this decision.
“Coach Neighbors is a great coach. He knows safeties, he knows SEC football and we have a great relationship. Coach Golding is the mastermind behind the Ole Miss defense. He coached under Nick Saban, he is very smart and I love the scheme. Coach Kiffin and I have a great relationship. We have talked about a lot of things, we play pickleball when I am down there and he is an exciting head coach to play for.”
McCoy is ready to compete in Oxford
Kiffin was the first to find out about McCoy’s decision. The No. 39 safety in the country told the Ole Miss head coach of his decision on the official visit. McCoy is excited about his future on the Grove.
“Ole Miss is a lot like Buford,” McCoy said. “They are very competitive with each other. They compete every day and make each other better. The players at Ole Miss compete with the 10 guys you go on the field with and I love that.
“I am a workhorse and I want to come in and help the team win. I am determined, I love to work and I can’t wait to get to work in their system. At Ole Miss, I can come in and be a guy for them. It is the right fit for me with their development, their system and how it will show my talent.”

“It doesn’t sit well with me”: Why Kyle Larson wants to run the Indy 500 again

Kyle Larson enters the Brickyard 400 as the defending winner of the event. However, it is also his first time racing at the historic oval since competing in the Indianapolis 500 this past May.
Larson was attempting to complete the rare ‘Double’ after a failed attempt in 2024. And while he did take part in both races this time, he came several hundred miles short of running all the laps due to wrecking out of both races.
As he returns to IMS, Larson told NASCAR on TNT that the experience “hasn’t changed how I view this place. I always viewed it as being an amazing facility with an amazing history and all that.”
Reflecting further on the attempt, Larson admitted: “I obviously wish it would have gone better. I just made a lot of mistakes this May and crashed a few times, and just put myself in bad positions. I’ll always be grateful for the chance to get to do the Double. (I) wish it would have gone better, but still, a lot of fun and a lot of stress throughout those couple of weeks. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
Will he ever run the Indy 500 again?

As Larson has previously said, he has no desire to attempt the ‘Double’ again in the immediate future, citing logistical challenges. However, he still wants to run the Indy 500 again, but a third attempt at the iconic race will likely have to wait until the end of his NASCAR career.

“It doesn’t sit well with me that I made two mistakes in both of the years I’ve done it and didn’t get the finishes I wanted,” said Larson. “But even if I don’t get to run the Indy 500 again, I’m grateful to have gotten to do it … We’ll see what the future holds.”

Larson also hasn’t won a Cup race since attempting to run the Indy 500 and the Coke 600 during Memorial Day Weekend, but he doesn’t necessarily feel the two are connected.

“We’ve been off since the Double attempt this year, but I just think that’s circumstantial,” explained Larson. He also believes that running the Indy 500 doesn’t take anything away from the Cup program, as he is constantly running other races all around the country.
“I don’t think it takes anything away. I race all the time, so I don’t spend a whole lot of time prepping for NASCAR races in general.”

Taylor Swift Supports Travis Kelce in Happy Gilmore 2 With Cheeky Nod to His Shirtless Honey Scene
Taylor Swift‘s love for Travis Kelce is sweet like honey.
The “August” singer—who has been dating the Kansas City Chiefs tight end since late summer 2023—celebrated Travis’ cameo in Happy Gilmore 2 with a rare return to social media on July 25.
Sharing a poster of the golf comedy, Taylor wrote on her Instagram Story, “Happy Gilmore 2 had me cackling and cheering the whole movie! An absolute must watch, 13/10, go watch it on @netflix as soon as humanly possible.”
She also added a honey emoji in reference to a funny scene in which Bad Bunny rubs the gooey treat on Travis’ shirtless body.
As for the NFL star’s acting skills? Writer and star Adam Sandler said he had an enchanting experience with Travis on set.
“Travis just came from a football game,” the actor told E! News earlier this month. “I think he had a game on Sunday, and he was on our set on Monday and showed up with bruises on his back and he just was pulling up, gave us a couple days of greatness and then back to life.”

Leonardo Fornaroli Finds “Relief and Confidence” After F2 Triumph

After his long-awaited F2 win at Silverstone, Leonardo Fornaroli reveals to LWOS the renewed determination he carries into Belgium.
F2 Momentum Builds for Leonardo Fornaroli After Silverstone Success
Leonardo Fornaroli has finally entered the club of Formula 2 winners. The Italian’s path to the top step of the podium has been a long and testing one. Now, it has paid off.

1492 days before Silverstone, Fornaroli was 16 years old, racing for Iron Lynx in Italian Formula 4.
He arrived at Misano, the second round of the championship, filled with confidence following a strong showing at Le Castellet, where he had scored points in all three opening races.
Fornaroli started Race 1 from pole position and led from lights to flag. That weekend, he secured three podium finishes across all races.
While the season did not unfold exactly as he had hoped, he demonstrated his speed and potential.
The Pressure of Winning
In motorsport, consistency remains a key factor. Every driver aims to strike the right balance between scoring points and winning every race, without overdoing it, which can have negative consequences.
Fornaroli has long understood the value of consistency. It has been instrumental in his rise through the junior ranks, even earning him a driver title. In Formula 3 last year, he exemplified this balance while driving for the title-winning team Trident.
The Italian team has played a pivotal role in Fornaroli’s development since his debut season in the European Formula Regional Championship. With Trident, he endured the frustration of struggling for top results, but also savoured the highs, standing on podiums and eventually securing a title in the final race at Monza.
Although he closed the 2024 season on a high, one thing was still missing: a race win. While consistency is an important factor in demonstrating a driver’s reliability, it is not everything in motorsport. Drivers do not go out on track to finish in the points or second. They race to reach the top step, to prove they have outperformed everyone else.
That hunger fuelled Fornaroli every time he put his helmet on and took to the track. But desire alone is not always enough; sometimes, achieving that next level requires a mental shift.

Fornaroli’s F2 Journey: Close, but Not Quite
Over the years, Fornaroli has come close to victory multiple times since that breakthrough win in Misano. One of the most notable near-misses came earlier this season in Monte Carlo’s feature race, a track where overtaking is famously difficult.
After emerging unscathed from the opening chaos, he found himself comfortably in the lead. Victory seemed within reach. However, some might say fate had different plans for him.
The Italian was blindsided by a late safety car call, which helped Jak Crawford pit and exit in front of the group. The race was then red-flagged for damage to the barrier. As a result, Fornaroli finished in second place, feeling bitter about how things turned out for him.

A New Chapter: Silverstone and Beyond
At Silverstone, after a difficult qualifying session, Fornaroli managed to clinch pole for the Sprint Race.
This time, he refused to let the opportunity evade him. When the lights went out, he briefly lost the lead to Kush Maini but quickly reclaimed it. From that point on, he controlled the race and crossed the line in first.
Now, as he heads to Spa, where margins are tight, Fornaroli is determined to hit the ground running and replicate the result from Silverstone.
Ahead of the Belgian round, LWOS spoke with Foranoli about what achieving that victory means for him and how he can translate the joy of the event into determination for this weekend:
“Yes, it was a little relief. Finally, I managed to win my first race in F2, and it was very nice. I was very happy about that race, and this win gives me a bit more confidence because now I know that I have the potential to win. Still, it was a sprint race, so it gives me more motivation to try to take something bigger.” – Leonardo Fornaroli to LWOS.
Last year, Spa served as the penultimate round of the Formula 3 season, where Fornaroli took the championship lead. This weekend, he will aim to at least match that performance, if not surpass it.

Ty Dillon, meanwhile, will face off against Ty Gibbs for the head-to-head In-Season Challenge title. Larson will look to win his fourth race of the season, but first since May 11. Larson, the 2021 Cup Series champion, has 13 top-10 finishes this season, including a fourth-place finish at last week’s EchoPark Automotive 400 at Dover Motor Speedway.

He was runner-up at the Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway on July 13 and at the EchoPark Automotive 400 at Dover Motor Speedway this past Sunday. He has one win on the year, taking first at the Great American Getaway at Pocono Raceway on June 22.
He has 10 top-10 finishes this season. In 161 career races over five years at the Cup Series level, Briscoe has registered three wins with 39 top-10 finishes and six pole positions. His best season finish was ninth in 2022. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver was the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year. See which other drivers he’s backing at SportsLine.
Top NASCAR props for Brickyard 400

Dillon, a 12-year NASCAR Cup Series veteran, is still seeking his first win on the circuit, although he has eight top-10 finishes in 249 races. He placed eighth at the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta. Dillon, 33, was the 2012 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rookie of the Year.
Gibbs, meanwhile, is the grandson of NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs and is seeking his first Cup Series win. He does have 27 top-10 finishes over his four-year Cup Series career in 103 races run. He has six top-10 finishes this season, including each of the past three weeks. Gibbs was second at the Grant Park 165 in Chicago three weeks ago. See all of Taranto’s picks at SportsLine.
