John Chaplin, WSU’s winningest coach ever, is pushing 90 and fired up as ever

STEP INSIDE JOHN CHAPLIN’S world, and you quickly realize you’re not in a typical home. The walls are adorned with art collected from around the world, including woodcuts by his father, an internationally acclaimed artist. His den is filled with hundreds of books curated by an intellect … the Harvard Classics, the complete works of Spinoza, 15 volumes of the Catholic Encyclopedia, and the book he believes is the finest of the 20th century, Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond.
The books share space with an eclectic liquor collection befitting a world traveler of discriminating taste. Chaplin holds a soft spot for Vintage Port, with Hungarian Tokaji and Lemon Grand Marnier from Argentina not far behind.
The 2.5-acre Chaplin spread sits about seven miles outside of Pullman, off Highway 27, on the way to Palouse. Inside and out, the place is almost as interesting as the man himself.
“As you can tell, this is where I belong,” Chaplin said in conversations with Cougfan.com over the last month-and-a-half. “This den is the 14th century without the TV set. This is a library den with a bar and that’s the best liquor collection in Eastern Washington.”
To talk with John Chaplin is to enter a place where history, philosophy, and blunt honesty matter more than any medal ever could. Asked about the news earlier this month that WSU is paring its track and field program down to just distance running, he delivers in straight-forward fashion.
“As an alumni who coached here for many years and led the program to worldwide success, WSU has delivered a strong message to current athletes, past athletes and coaches: you don’t give a damn. There are many ways to adjust budgets without throwing in the towel,” he said.
“To drop a bomb like this in the dark of night and then run off and hide from questions the media is asking is embarrassing. And the kids didn’t even find out from the athletic director — an associate AD, who couldn’t tell you if a track is pumped or stuffed, was sent.”
Efforts by Cougfan.com to reach WSU AD Anne McCoy and track coach Wayne Phipps for insight beyond the five-sentence June 16 press release announcing the gutting of the program have so far been unsuccessful.
CHAPLIN’S SPIRIT AND ENERGY, nearly nine decades in, suggest but one thought about the younger Chaplin who built a juggernaut on the Palouse: he must have been a perpetual motion machine.
In Man of the Oval: The International Legacy of John Chaplin and WSU Track & Field — the page-turning book about Chaplin that came out in 2023 — Chaplin recounts asking the doctor how his blood pressure was stacking up. The doctor replied, “Hell, John, you don’t have high blood pressure. You give it.”
Chaplin, 88, spends much of his time today reading and writing. Asked how he stays fit, he fires back, “Are you crazy? I don’t believe in physical exercise. As a former quarter-miler, I say anyone who runs more than one lap is missing their hole card.”
From 1965 with Gerry Lindgren to 1999 with Bernard Lagat, Washington State University was a world power in track and field, and Chaplin was part of all but a handful of those 34 years. In 1968 the legendary Jack Mooberry hired him as an assistant track and field coach and cross country head coach. For 21 years, from 1973-94, Chaplin ran the whole show and the results were downright storybook.
And it was storybook in colorful fashion. Chaplin was a walking quote factory and his recruiting — built on in-staters, walk ons and a marvelous array of international athletes — was nothing short of head turning.
When opposing coaches grumbled about his international pipeline, Chaplin ringed Mooberry Field with flagpoles flying the colors of every nation represented by his Cougars. By the time he retired in 1994, 31 different flags had flown at the track.

JULY 9 – VERSUS THAILAND
Skinner entered the lineup for the first time this VNL tournament and had a heck of a showing with a team-high 22 points, 19 kills and 10 digs, also tacking on two blocks and an ace. The native Texan had a .324 hitting efficiency in her 2025 VNL debut, helping the the U.S. Women’s National Team defeat Thailand, 3-1 (28-26, 21-25, 27-25, 25-15).
“Thailand is an amazing team. We knew the rallies were going to be long, so for us, it was about being patient, not trying to score necessarily on the first ball but when we got our chance, then going for it,” Skinner commented. “It was special. I have been so excited waiting for this match. I’m glad we could come out and get a win. It’s really fun being back with this group. Coming to Arlington is so fun because we get to play in front of our crowd. We are grateful for all the fans who have come out to support us.”

Jacksonville, Fla. – The Jacksonville University beach volleyball team announced Thursday the hiring of Emily Kubicsko as the team’s new assistant coach. Kubicsko joins in a coaching role after a decorated four-year career with the team as a student-athlete.
“I am thrilled to welcome Emily to our staff this year,” head coach Dylan Hough said. “Over the past four years, she has been a foundational part of our program’s growth, and I’m excited to see her continue to elevate JU Beach in this new role. Emily is an exceptional teammate, leader, student, and friend. Her character and work ethic have always set the standard, and I have no doubt she will thrive and make a lasting impact in this new position.”
During her career as an athlete, Kubicsko etched herself as the program’s all-time wins leader.
She made an immediate impact as a freshman, appearing in 34 matches and helping the Dolphins to their most single-season wins in program history. During that 2022 campaign, she broke the freshman wins record alongside Sydney Eckhardt, and set the single-season record at the 2’s flight with Eckhardt.
The next year, she set a new record for wins by 1’s pair in a single season by seven wins with 24. After another 16 wins in her junior year, she was only five wins shy of the all-time win record in Jacksonville Beach Volleyball history.
Heading into her senior campaign, Kubicsko earned preseason All-ASUN honors. Fourteen games into the 2025 season, she became the all-time wins leader in Jacksonville University history. She wrapped up her illustrious career with 72 wins, 11 more than the previous record holder.
Her senior season earned her Second-Team All-ASUN honors. Her 2022 class graduated as the winningest in program history.

FIRST ON FOX: The House of Representatives is rolling out bipartisan legislation later on Thursday that will mark a major shift in the world of college sports, particularly the compensation of student athletes, Fox News Digital has learned.
The bill would codify the right for student athletes to get paid for the use of their name, image and likeness (NIL), while mandating that colleges and universities also provide them with “comprehensive” academic, career counseling, and medical support, according to text obtained by Fox News Digital.
NIL regulations would be standardized across the country, overriding the current patchwork of state laws. More than 30 states allow colleges to pay student athletes for NIL, while no such regulations exist in others.
Student athletes would be able to hire agents and would have to disclose their NIL deals to their schools and to nonprofit Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Associations (IIAA), like the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and similar groups.
TAX CUTS, WORK REQUIREMENTS AND ASYLUM FEES: HERE’S WHAT’S INSIDE TRUMP’S BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL

For non-athlete students at colleges and universities that bring in high revenue from sports media, it would shield them from footing the bill for their college’s athletics programs by prohibiting student fees at those schools from being used for them.
The bill also expressly prohibits student athletes from being considered employees of a college over their sporting participation.
It’s a bipartisan bill that’s the product of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, House Education & Workforce Committee, and the House Judiciary Committee.
Its lead co-sponsors are Reps. Janelle Bynum, D-Ore., and Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla. Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Ala., is also a co-sponsor.
Committee Chairmen Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., Tim Walberg, R-Mich., and Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told Fox News Digital in a joint statement, “NIL offers an endless array of opportunities for student-athletes to make the most of their college experience, but the lack of clear guardrails has left athletes and universities on unstable ground.”
“The SCORE Act creates a national framework that supports student-athletes and recenters the educational mission of college athletics,” they said.
Jordan, notably, was a two-time NCAA Division I college wrestling champion. He later became a coach with Ohio State University’s wrestling program before being elected to Congress.

Whether student athletes should receive a portion of their school’s sports media revenue and how much has been a years-long debate.
There have been several attempts in Congress to push for legislation giving student athletes the ability to profit off of their college sporting careers.
The NCAA, college sports’ main governing body, changed its rules in 2021 to allow student athletes to profit from NIL.
It comes after reports that such legislation could be introduced this week after a June antitrust settlement in House v. NCAA between the NCAA and lawyers for Division I college athletes. A judge approved over $2.7 billion in back pay for college athletes shut out of NIL deals between 2016 and 2024, paving the way for colleges to pay players directly.
Under the bill’s parameters, IIAAs would ensure NIL deals aligned with fair market value, while being able to limit student athletes’ eligibility based on the length of their college sports career and create new requirements for agents not registered with the IIAA.
The text also includes a liability shield for universities and IIAA that “the adoption of, agreement to, compliance with, or enforcement of any rule, regulation, requirement, standard, or other provision established pursuant to, or in compliance with, this Act shall be treated as lawful under the antitrust laws” and any state or local laws.

The bill was lauded by Reps. Gus Bilirakis, R-Fla., Scott Fitzgerald, R-Wis., and House GOP Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain, R-Mich., all who played key roles in putting the legislation together.
It was also praised by the NCAA’s Autonomy Conferences – the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC.
“This legislation comes at a time of historic transition for college athletics. In the absence of federal standards, student-athletes and schools have been forced to navigate a fractured regulatory framework for too long,” a statement to Fox News Digital said.
“Following the historic House settlement, this bill represents a very encouraging step toward delivering the national clarity and accountability that college athletics desperately needs. We urge lawmakers to build on this momentum and deliver the national solution that athletes, coaches, and schools deserve.”
