Your quarterback is often the face of your program. Over the course of the Oklahoma Sooners’ football program and their history, that has been the case several times, whether it’s Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, or Jalen Hurts as of late.

And, all of those guys were usually one of the most popular in the sport when they played at Oklahoma. All of them were pretty polarizing in their own way. Mayfield had on-field controversies that helped create a pretty divided view of him. Fans either hated him or loved him; there was no in-between.
Murray had all the talent in the world, including his running ability, and was drafted to play professional baseball, but he was also an underdog because his size was supposed to be an issue for him, only it wasn’t.
Hurts had the stint at Alabama, where he won a National Championship, but was replaced when he started playing poorly. And then that flipped when Hurts went back in after Tua Tagovailoa was hurt. Hurts came in and played well, but it wasn’t his team anymore. So, he transferred to OU and had an amazing year.

Now, Oklahoma has John Mateer, whose story isn’t as dramatic as those. However, he was also passed over by many teams out of high school in Texas. Fast forward to this season, and he has his offensive coordinator, whom he has had for a few years, and is in a bigger conference. Oh, and there may be a potential gambling scandal there, but for now, that seems to have passed by the Sooners.
He’s the face of the program right now, and he’s taking advantage of it, just like those other three would have.
John Mateer has a new NIL deal and commercial with Beats By Dre
By now, you may have all seen it, so I’ll just say – the commercial, or ad, whatever you want to call it, is amazing. It puts the world, yes, the world, because Beats By Dre is a global company, on to what the Sooners are and offers a look into the football program.

It starts with Mateer looking like he is doing some mental game prep before a game by listening to music, and then it goes to him running out of a tunnel and getting ready for a game in pads. It’s truly a commercial that should hype every single fan up.

Now, we don’t know what type of NIL deal this is, or how much it is, but we do know that there isn’t any other player in college football who is doing this type of NIL deal. This year, I have yet to see a player have a commercial from a global brand, one worth $3 billion, like Mateer now has.

That just goes to show you the type of things Oklahoma is doing, and when it all puts it on the field, it’s going to be even better.
