SPEEDWAY, Ind. (WISH) — Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden got out of his car and is done for the day in the Indianapolis 500. He was dealing with a fuel pressure issue.

He completed 135 laps.

“Something we’ve never seen before,” Newgarden said. “Just unfortunate for the whole group. It’s a team sport, and that very much shows it.”

“To not have a shot to fight at the end there is just a bit of a punch to the gut.”

Newgarden won the Indianapolis 500 in 2023 and 2024. He was going for his third straight win this year, which no driver has ever done.

He started the race in 32nd after being penalized for modifying the attenuator on his car. He had made his way up to the top ten at one point in the race before his fuel pressure issue.

“I think we were trending in the right direction,” Newgarden said. “We just tried to take our time today. It’s not going to matter until the very end, and I think we were going to be in position to at least give it a fight.”
