What’s Happening?
JR Motorsports and Red Bull will field two cars for the NASCAR Xfinity Series Chicago Street race on July 5.
- Red Bull returned to NASCAR this year with Trackhouse Racing drivers Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch. Prior to their return to NASCAR, the brand had not appeared in the sport since 2011; this will be their first Xfinity Series race since they sponsored Cole Whitt in 2011.
- Red Bull had a short but impactful history in NASCAR prior to their return. With Red Bull Racing, the team scored two NASCAR Cup Series wins. But, the real impact the team made on the sport was their flashy paint schemes, which turned into still highly sod after die-cast.
- As part of the brand’s return, both drivers have received die-cast for their Cup Series rides, and Lionel Racing is selling a special 1:64 die-cast two-pack for their return to the Xfinity Series.
- SVG is a long-time partner with Red Bull, racing for the energy drink brand in the Australian Supercars. This year, he has one win in the Cup Series, but has not made an Xfinity Series start. He is racing the No. 9 in three races this season, with back to back efforts in Chicago and Sonoma. Last year, in the Xfinity Series with Kaulig Racing, van Gisbergen won three races, including the races in Chicago and Sonoma.
- On the other hand, this race will be Zilisch’s first in Chicago. Despite his inexperience, the road course prodigy may be the heavy favorite to win next to his Trackhouse Racing and JRM teammate. So far this year, in his rookie campaign, the 18-year-old has two wins and has sat on the pole for both the series and two road course races.
