Quaker State, Daniel Suárez, Trackhouse Racing and JR Motorsports Team Up for Mexico City Xfinity Series Race – Speedway Digest

Trackhouse Racing and JR Motorsports announced today that Quaker State will sponsor the No. 9 JRM Chevrolet driven by Daniel Suárez in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on June 14 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course in Mexico City.
The event marks the series’ return to Mexico and a homecoming for Suárez, a native of Monterrey, Mexico.
”Having the opportunity to compete in the Xfinity Series race makes the weekend in Mexico City even better,” said Suárez, the only Mexican driver to win NASCAR Cup Series races (Sonoma, 2022 and Atlanta, 2024).
“I’ve been very impressed with how fast JR Motorsports has been this season, and I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the Quaker State Chevrolet in a few weeks. Being born and raised in Mexico is incredibly special to me. I have dreamed about racing in my home country every day since I left Mexico to chase my NASCAR dream in 2011. I appreciate everyone at Quaker State and JR Motorsports coming on board to make this a reality.”
The NASCAR Xfinity Series competed on the road course from 2005 – 2008. Suárez, the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion, will compete in the NASCAR Cup Series event the following day in the No. 99 Telcel-Infinitum Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing.
Suárez will make his first Xfinity Series start of the 2025 NASCAR season at Mexico City. His most recent start in the series came in 2024 at the Chicago Street Race. Suárez won three races on the way to claiming the Xfinity Series title in 2016, including a dominating performance in the season finale at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway, where he won the pole, led the most laps, and won the race.
“I think everyone is going to be amazed by the reception in Mexico,” said Suárez. “We want to make this weekend permanent on the NASCAR calendar for many years.”
The historic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course is 2.42 miles long and boasts 15 turns at an elevation of 7,342 feet. Built in 1959 and remodeled in 2015, it honors Mexican racing brothers Ricardo Rodríguez and Pedro Rodríguez and has hosted eight Formula 1 races.
“The historic arrival of the NASCAR Cup Series in Mexico is a milestone for motorsports. At Quaker State, we understand that on-track performance reflects a commitment to technology, cutting-edge technology, and engine protection. Our lubricants are formulated to protect vehicle engines, even in extreme conditions,” said Ricardo Ibarra, CEO of CS Shell & Quaker State.
Suárez joins an impressive roster of JR Motorsports drivers competing in Mexico City, including Trackhouse Racing development driver Connor Zilisch, 2024 Xfinity Series Champion Justin Allgaier, Sammy Smith, and Carson Kvapil.
Suárez said he has observed that Mexican race fans are growing more interested in NASCAR.
“Mexico has been loving motorsports for a very long time, and I feel like, slowly, that has also changed into NASCAR,” said Suárez. “NASCAR is a very important sport for Mexico, and it continues to grow with the NASCAR Mexico Series and now the Cup and Xfinity Series going there. It’s going to be a big deal. There are a lot of super excited people.”
The CW Network will televise the Mexico City Xfinity race at 4:30 p.m. ET on June 14.

Superb competition at Charlotte makes a case for a championship race – Speedway Digest

The historical high temperature in Concord, North Carolina, in early November is 66 degrees.
Why is that statistic relevant to stock car racing?
NASCAR is considering possible venues for its season-ending Championship weekend, which will start to move in rotation next year with a return to Homestead-Miami Speedway.
Phoenix Raceway, which has hosted Championship races in all three of NASCAR’s national series for the past five years, will remain in the mix.
With weather clearly a major consideration in the placement of the title races, Las Vegas is another city that immediately comes to mind. The average high temperature in November in Sin City is 66 degrees.
In determining the rotation for the Championship 4 races, weather clearly is a major consideration, but it isn’t the only one. The quality of the product on the track also should be an important element in the selection.
And if what fans saw in Sunday night’s Coca-Cola 600 is an indication, Charlotte Motor Speedway deserves a place in the championship lineup.
After William Byron dominated the first two stages of the race in fading daylight, the track changed, as it always does. Denny Hamlin arrived at the front of the field to challenge Byron, who had won the second stage by more than seven seconds.
Over the last 300 miles of NASCAR’s longest race, Byron and Hamlin battled back and forth, swapping the lead 14 times—nine times in the third stage alone.
Hamlin would attack. Byron would defend. Hamlin would edge ahead at the start/finish line by thousandths of a second. Byron would charge through the first two corners and regain the top spot.
It was sustained, close competition at the highest level.
And then, seemingly out of nowhere, crew chief Phil Surgen made an adjustment to Ross Chastain’s No. 1 Chevrolet that brought the car to life for the final run.
With Hamlin out of fuel and out of the picture after an unscheduled pit stop, Chastain was relentless in his pursuit of Byron, who led 283 of the 400 laps. On Lap 394, Byron’s car tightened up in Turns 3 and 4.
Seizing the opportunity, Chastain carried his momentum into Turns 1 and 2, dived to the inside and cleared Byron’s Chevrolet off the corner. Chastain went on to win one of the most memorable races of the last four years.
Notably, the Coca-Cola 600 produced some of the most compelling racing of the Gen 7 era, and it happened in front of a packed house.
Let’s hope Charlotte Motor Speedway gets the consideration it deserves when NASCAR decides which venues are worthy of the championship races.
Let’s table the “Double” for the time being
Kyle Larson’s second attempt at the Indianapolis 500/Coca-Cola 600 double ended in disappointment—twice.
Larson crashed on Lap 92 at Indy, spinning in dirty air behind Takuma Sata. Out of the 500 early, Larson had plenty of time to arrive at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the start of the Coke 600, but he slapped the wall during the opening run and damaged the front suspension of his Chevrolet.
Later, on Lap 42, Larson spun through the infield grass, and on Lap 246 of 400, he was collected in a five-car wreck off Turn 4 and eliminated from the race.
As unflappable as Larson appears, he was clearly chagrined by the wreck at Indy. After the accident at Charlotte, he was already evaluating the wisdom of trying to run both races on the same day.
“I don’t know, it’s so fresh right now I don’t really have a good answer for you,” Larson said. “The double is just a tough undertaking. The window of time is too tight. Even if I didn’t wreck, I don’t think I would have made it here on time and probably would have had to end that race short anyways.
“So, I don’t really think it’s worth it. But I would love to run the Indy 500 again. Just doing the double, I think, is just logistically too tough.”
Larson is right. With a 12:45 starting time for the Indy 500, circumstances have to fall into line perfectly for a driver to complete both races, and in Larson’s two attempts, rain worked against him.
When Tony Stewart completed all 1,100 miles in 2001, the Indianapolis 500 started at its traditional time of 11 a.m. A 12:45 p.m. start means weather can’t be a factor at Indy, and nothing is more undependable than spring weather in the Midwest.
In addition, pulling off the double requires an enormous commitment of time, money and personnel on the part of Hendrick Motorsports.
It’s a glamorous undertaking that generates a treasure trove of publicity, but the cost is too high, given the risks inherent in the process.

Trackhouse Racing and JR Motorsports have come together to provide Daniel Suárez with an awesome opportunity. When the NASCAR Xfinity Series heads to the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course in Mexico City on June 14, Suárez will be behind the wheel of the No. 9 JRM Chevrolet.
The Monterrey, Mexico native’s ride is going to be sponsored by Quaker State. JRM noted in a press release that the event will mark the series’ return to Mexico and a homecoming for Suárez. It’s a perfect storm for the partnership. Check out the scheme below.
“Having the opportunity to compete in the Xfinity Series race makes the weekend in Mexico City even better,” said Suárez, via the press release. “I’ve been very impressed with how fast JR Motorsports has been this season, and I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the Quaker State Chevrolet in a few weeks.
“Being born and raised in Mexico is incredibly special to me. I have dreamed about racing in my home country every day since I left Mexico to chase my NASCAR dream in 2011. I appreciate everyone at Quaker State and JR Motorsports coming on board to make this a reality.”
Moreover, Suárez is the only Mexican driver to win a NASCAR Cup Series race, and he’s done so twice. The 33-year old won at Sonoma in 2022 and Atlanta in 2024. Now, he’ll have two chances to win at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course in NASCAR, racing in the Xfinity Series and Cup Series events.
“The historic arrival of the NASCAR Cup Series in Mexico is a milestone for motorsports,” Ricardo Ibarra, CEO of CS Shell & Quaker State, added via the press release. “At Quaker State, we understand that on-track performance reflects a commitment to technology, cutting-edge technology, and engine protection. Our lubricants are formulated to protect vehicle engines, even in extreme conditions.”
Continuing, the size of the opportunity for himself, and NASCAR in Mexico as a whole isn’t lost on Suárez. He thinks it’s going to blow everyone’s expectations out of the water, and become a date that’ll only help the sport grow in the future.
“I think everyone is going to be amazed by the reception in Mexico,” stated Suárez. “We want to make this weekend permanent on the NASCAR calendar for many years. … “Mexico has been loving motorsports for a very long time, and I feel like, slowly, that has also changed into NASCAR.
“NASCAR is a very important sport for Mexico, and it continues to grow with the NASCAR Mexico Series and now the Cup and Xfinity Series going there. It’s going to be a big deal. There are a lot of super excited people.”
It’ll all go down on June 14. We’ll see if Daniel Suárez can come through in front of his home crowd, as he has a once in a lifetime opportunity at his fingertips. Only a couple of weeks until the rubber meets the road.

NASCAR has announced that the 2026 NASCAR Championship Weekend, featuring the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, will return to Homestead-Miami Speedway to conclude the 2026 season. This will be the first time since 2019 that NASCAR’s three national series will crown their champions at the South Florida racetrack.
The announcement marks a Homestead homecoming for the conclusion to the NASCAR Playoffs, as the track previously hosted the NASCAR Championship from 2002 to 2019.
NASCAR Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway will be Nov. 6-8, 2026.
As part of this shift, the NASCAR Championship Weekend will move to a new rotating model as part of a fan-centric effort to ensure that the season’s exciting conclusion is shared among NASCAR’s marquee venues and key markets. Similar to other major sports championships, NASCAR will showcase its championship weekend on the new rotating model to provide greater exposure for its season’s finale in multiple markets.
“Homestead-Miami Speedway has a history of competitive, championship racing that will provide nostalgia for veteran drivers and fans and exhilaration for NASCAR’s new generation,” said Ben Kennedy, executive vice president, chief venue and racing innovation officer. “As we move forward, the rotating model will provide new challenges for competitors as well as opportunities for unique venues to host our loyal fans at NASCAR Championship Weekend.”
“As we celebrate our 30th season, it is fitting we will start our next decade returning to our championship roots at Homestead-Miami Speedway,” said Guillermo Santa Cruz, Homestead-Miami Speedway president. “The 2026 NASCAR Championship Weekend will offer the brightest young stars of the sport the opportunity to join the illustrious 18-year history of championship racing in South Florida alongside veteran fan-favorite drivers.”
Three active drivers who were crowned Cup Series champions at Homestead-Miami Speedway will be hoping that history repeats itself in 2026 – Kyle Busch of Richard Childress Racing (2015, 2019), Brad Keselowski of RFK Racing (2012), and Joey Logano of Team Penske (2018). Logano also has added two championships at Phoenix Raceway (2022, 2024).
Phoenix Raceway has been a model racetrack hosting NASCAR Championship Weekend with sellouts and an unparalleled fan experience since 2020. As part of the 2026 NASCAR schedule, Phoenix Raceway will continue to host two Cup Series race dates and be a part of the NASCAR Championship as it will continue to host a prominent race in the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Playoffs. Those dates will be announced. The racetrack also will be included in the championship rotation, so NASCAR Championship Weekend will return to conclude a future season.
Tickets for 2026 NASCAR Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway can be purchased at 866-409-7223 or online at www.homesteadmiamispeedway.com.
Founded by Miami businessman, racing enthusiast and philanthropist Ralph Sanchez, Homestead-Miami Speedway has been open since 1995 following an initiative to spur economic recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. The 650-acre facility features a 1.5-mile oval and 2.21-mile road course which also hosts on-track events nearly 300 days per year and generates more than $301 million annually for the region. NASCAR crowned champions in all three of its national series at Homestead-Miami Speedway for 18 straight years (2002-19).

Spears CARS Tour West Hires Chris Wright as Series Director – Speedway Digest
Continuing to build a marque series, the Spears CARS Tour West announced today the hiring of veteran motorsports leader, Chris Wright, as the new series director. Continuing to build a marque series, the Spears CARS Tour West announced today the hiring of veteran motorsports leader, Chris Wright, as the new series director. Wright joins the Spears CARS Tour West after most recently leading the ARCA Series East and West for NASCAR.
“I’m very thankful for Kevin and DeLana Harvick and Tim and Lisa Huddleston for reaching out to me and wanting me to be a part of their team to help continue to build the Spears CARS Tour West brand,” said Wright. “I’m also grateful for my time at NASCAR and the France family for giving me the opportunity to help build the ARCA Series, especially on the West Coast.”
“Given Chris’ racing background and knowledge, we think he will be an integral part of the CARS Tour West’s expansion and growth,” said series co-owner, Kevin Harvick. “This will give the competitors a lot of experience to lean on as we grow and reshape West Coast racing.”
Growing up in a racing family and with a career in motorsports that has spanned more than three decades, Wright has worked for his family-owned team and Hall of Famers. He has worked in multiple areas of motorsports including as a crew chief and series director, and with each transition, he has left the last place better than he found it. His career has provided him with the platform to be a part of race wins, championships and help shape the next generation of racers.
“Throughout my career, I’ve enjoyed working with veterans who knew what they wanted while in the driver’s seat and knew how to get it done, but later in my career, I’ve been able to work with a younger generation, male and females, and really found I had a knack for helping them develop their careers,” said Wright. “So, in this level of racing, particularly with the late model scene, you get to see both sides of that. You get to see the veterans, the Derek Thorn’s and Kevin Harvick’s, and you get to see the Keelan Harvick’s go through the ranks. I’ve been fortunate to see guys like Jesse Love come up through the ranks and are now making it in the higher series and making a name for themselves after coming up through the West Coast ranks.”
Wright joined NASCAR in 2013 as the series director for the NASCAR ARCA East Series (previously the K&N Pro Series East) and in 2017, Wright became the series director for the NASCAR ARCA West Series (previously the K&N Series West). Wright became the first, and only person to date, to manage both the East and West NASCAR Touring Series at the same time, and leaves the ARCA East Series as the longest standing series director. During his time managing the ARCA West Series, Wright built relationships across the West Coast and helped to rebuild the NASCAR ARCA West Coast brand into what it is today.
“I really feel like there’s a lot of opportunity on the West Coast,” continued Wright. “I hope we are able to tap into the relationships I’ve built and continue to build the CARS Tour West into a premier racing series and create a series that people want to be a part of.”
The 2025 Spears CARS Tour West Series continues this weekend at Kevin Harvick’s Kern Raceway for the highly anticipated Harvick Showdown between father and son, Kevin and Keelan Harvick. NASCAR Hall of Famer and West Coast legend, Ron Hornaday Jr. will serve as the grand marshal. The Mission Bank 250 on Saturday, May 31, will air live on FloRacing.com.
