DES MOINES, Iowa – The K-State track and field teams registered the first results in the Drake Relays on Thursday (April 24), finishing the men’s decathlon and competing in the distance events at Drake Stadium. The remaining two days of competition can be streamed on RunnerSpace with a subscription. Single session tickets can be purchased starting at $18.

Senior Emil Uhlin finished the men’s decathlon in 4th place with a new personal best of 7,788 points, the new no. 6 score in the K-State all-time top-10. Completing his first decathlon in two years, he recorded a new personal best by 170 points, a qualifying performance for the NCAA Championship in June.

In the second day of competition, Uhlin won three events– the discus throw (44.83m, 147′ 1″), pole vault (4.95m, 16′ 2 ¾”) and 1,500 meters in 4:32.14. On Wednesday (April 23) he finished runner-up in the shot put (14.21m, 46′ 7 ½”) and tied for 3rd in the high jump (1.95m, 6′ 4 ¾”).

Uhlin’s result surpasses K-State head coach Travis Geopfert and assistant coach Mat Clark‘s decathlon personal bests, both of 7,785 points. Assistant coach Kip Janvrin previously held the Drake Relays decathlon record at 8,198 points but that was surpassed by the 2025 winner, Till Steinforth of Nebraska at 8,265 points.

For the distance runners, sophomore Vienna Lahner won the women’s 1,500 meters university unseeded race in 4:22.37. Junior Grace Meyer competed in the same event in 4:28.69 in 11th place. In the men’s race, senior Alex Gutierrez ran 3:52.20, finishing 11th.

Finishing the night, freshman Jackson Esquibel finished 6th in the men’s 5,000 meters open race with a personal best time of 14:24.13.

The Wildcats start day three of competition on Friday (April 25) at 11:15 a.m. with the men’s shot put featuring Gary Moore Jr.
