CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Given his resume, Kurt Busch knew it was a matter of when, not if, he would be selected into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Still, getting voted in on the first ballot on Tuesday was a huge relief for Busch, who let out an emotional sigh of relief after hearing his named called at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

“I’m very grateful and thankful that it happened this first time,” Busch said. “You want to have that answer as fast as you can.”

Ray Hendrick and Harry Gant were also voted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame on Tuesday, while executive Humpy Wheeler was named the Landmark Award winner for his contribution to the sport. A ceremony will be held to officially induct the Class of 2026 into the Hall of Fame in March.

The 46-year-old Busch held off Jimmie Johnson to win the 2004 Cup Series championship and went on to win 34 Cup races, including at least one victory in 19 of his 21 full-time seasons on the premier circuit before he retired in 2023.

His journey to NASCAR stardom began in 2000 with a Truck Series rookie season that foreshadowed greatness. His big breakthrough came in 2004, when he became the first driver to win the title under NASCAR’s “playoff” system – a feat that proved both his excellence and adaptability.

The consistent Busch finished in the top 10 in the Cup Series standings 10 times.

“Things happened fast for me in this sport and I don’t know how or why,” Busch said. “There was no template, there wasn’t the ladder that these days you see the kids that have a system where it is going to be this or that. For me it was being in the right place at the right time and the universe smiled down on me.”

Hendrick, who died in 1990 at age 61, was the original “Mr. Modified.”

He is one of the winningest drivers of all time, with than 700 modified and late model sportsman wins between 1950-88. His success started in his home state of Virginia, where his No. 11 was well know. He won five track championships at South Boston Speedway — four modified and one late model sportsman.

He was known as a driver that was willing to race “anywhere and everywhere,” and did just that. He filled his schedule with modified and late model sportsman races across the East coast. Hendrick was known best for his wins on short tracks, but also produced victories at Talladega, Charlotte and Dover.

Despite never winning a Modified Division championship, Hendrick finished in the top 10 in the standings nine times from 1960-69.

The 85-year-old Gant, known as the “Bandit” for his long-time sponsorship with Skoal Bandits, won 18 Cup Series races, including the Southern 500 in 1984 and 1991. In the five seasons from 1981 through 1985, he finished in the top five in points four times, including a runner-up championship finish to Terry Labonte in 1984.

He also won 21 Xfinity Series races.

Members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame Voting Panel met Tuesday in an in-person closed session at the Charlotte Convention Center to debate and vote on the 15 nominees for the induction class of 2026 and the five nominees for the Landmark Award.

The 49-person voting panel included representatives from NASCAR, the Hall of Fame, track owners from major facilities and historic short tracks, media members, manufacturer representatives, competitors (drivers, owners, crew chiefs), recognized industry leaders, a nationwide fan vote conducted through NASCAR.com and the reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion (Joey Logano).

Busch and Gant both received 61% of the “modern era” ballot votes. Jeff Burton finished third, followed by Harry Hyde and Randy Dorton.

Hendrick received 31% of the “pioneer” ballot votes. Bob Welborn finished second.

Gant raced into his 50s, and still holds premier series records for oldest driver to win a race (52 years old) and a pole (54). He drove the first race car with a telemetry system installed in it at Talladega in 1985 and relayed the data to CBS during its coverage of the event.

This was the Gant’s seventh time on the ballot. He did not attend the announcement ceremony on Tuesday and was not available for comment.

All three were among NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers and one of NASCAR Modified’s All-Time Top 10 Drivers.

Wheeler became synonymous with promotion and innovation.

He spent 33 years as the president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway and played a pivotal role in transforming the venue into a world-class facility.

Wheeler added a new dynamic to the sport, a visionary whose leadership and creativity helped shape today’s fan experience with the introduction of dramatic prerace ceremonies and the development of night racing at superspeedways.

He was known for his innovative promotions and stunts.

Spire Motorsports have announced that Corey LaJoie will be returning to the team for nine races in 2025 after signing a new deal.

LaJoie previously drove for Spire in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2021 through to 2024, but split with the team late last season, completing the final seven races of the year with Rick Ware Racing.

LaJoie has remained associated with RWR in 2025, but only on a part time basis, meaning he has completed just three races so far.

NASCAR fans will have noticed that the 33-year-old has landed himself a new broadcast role as part of Prime Video’s coverage of the Cup Series, but on top of that, it appears he is going to back out on track much more in the second half of the season.

Corey LaJoie returns to Spire Motorsports

Following the Nashville race weekend, Spire Motorsports have confirmed that LaJoie will drive the No. 07 Chevrolet for nine of the final 13 races in the Truck Series this season.

The 33-year-old will make his ‘debut’ with the team as soon as this weekend at Richmond, set to compete in the DQS Solutions and Staffing 200.

“I’m looking forward to getting back in the seat and chasing some NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series wins,” LaJoie said in an official Spire Motorsports statement.

“I put in a lot of work in the early days to help shape Spire Motorsports, and I still have some friends that have been there since day one, so it’ll be good to see them.

“The No. 07 team has been bringing some fast trucks to the track this year and are looking for a spot in the owner’s playoffs.

“It’ll be nice to have some consistency with the team to get acclimated to these vehicles, chase some wins, and hopefully, a CRAFTSMAN Truck Series owner’s championship.”

HAMPTON, Ga. — Say goodbye to the Atlanta Motor Speedway and hello to EchoPark Speedway.

Gov. Brian Kemp joined officials on Tuesday morning at the iconic track in Hampton to announce the new name.

EchoPark Automotive has secured a seven-year, multimillion dollar agreement for the naming rights.

Channel 2’s Alison Mastrangelo was there as the new name and branding were unveiled around the speedway.

“We’re thrilled to partner with an innovative, customer-focused company like EchoPark Automotive as the entitlement partner of our newly named EchoPark Speedway,” said Speedway Motorsports President and CEO Marcus Smith. “This partnership will fuel great experiences for fans attending our speedway for years to come.”

After the announcement, NASCAR driver Ross Chastain took Gov. Kemp on a ride around the newly renamed track.

Fans will get their first chance to see the new track logo along the track walls and Victory Lane at the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart on Saturday, June 28.

EchoPark Automotive specializes in pre-owned vehicle sales and is one of three operating segments of Sonic Automotive, Inc., a Fortune 300 company and one of the largest automotive and powersports retailers in the U.S.

According to a news release, EchoPark Automotive operates 17 locations in 13 markets, including Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama, where a majority of Atlanta NASCAR fans travel from each year to visit the historic speedway.

“We have enjoyed serving guests in the Atlanta metro area since EchoPark Atlanta opened its doors in 2020,” said David B. ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Atlanta Motor Speedway is no more — at least, as far as its name goes.

State officials, NASCAR drivers and the speedway’s leadership gathered on Tuesday to announce the venue’s new name: EchoPark Speedway. The venue is decked out in the company’s signature green, and the sign above the grandstands now reads “EchoPark Speedway.”

Owned by Sonic Automotive, a Fortune 300 company, EchoPark Automotive specializes in selling pre-owned vehicles. In 2020, the company opened a storefront in Duluth. Later that year, it also sponsored the speedway’s EchoPark 250, a NASCAR Xfinity Series race.

Sonic Automotive CEO David Smith said during the announcement that he hopes the renaming helps Echo Park become a household name.

Open since 1960, the iconic speedway has been home to some of NASCAR’s closest race finishes. Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said it sees more than 1 million visitors each year and has an estimated annual economic impact of $250 million.

“To me, today is just another feather in our cap, if you will, when you think about the great sports Mecca that Georgia is becoming,” Kemp said.

The speedway’s EchoPark partnership will last for at least seven years, as per the agreement.

The next major race at EchoPark Speedway is the Quaker State 400 on June 28.

BELL AT MICHIGAN: Christopher Bell’s best finish in six NASCAR Cup Series starts at Michigan International Speedway is a trio of 13th-place finishes. Bell was on his way to a solid run at Michigan last year before a late-race accident relegated him to a 35th-place finish. The Oklahoma native posted a second-place finish in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race at Michigan during his 2017 championship season.

STARTING UP FRONT: In three races with the Next Gen car at Michigan, Bell has started second (2022), first (2023), and third (2024). His pole-winning lap of 193.382 mph in August 2023 is the fastest qualifying lap at any track since the Next Gen car’s inception in 2022.

NASHVILLE RECAP: Bell scored his seventh top-10 finish in the last eight races with a 10th-place result last Sunday at Nashville Superspeedway. After starting seventh, he ran up front early on and finished fifth in stage one. During stage two, Bell was involved in an accident on a restart that sent his No. 20 Toyota spinning into the outside wall. Despite the setback, the No. 20 team repaired Bell’s car well enough to allow him to recover for another top-10 result.

SEASON TO DATE: The 2025 season got off to a solid start for Bell, highlighted by three back-to-back-to-back wins at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Circuit of the Americas and Phoenix Raceway. Most recently, Bell proved to be an All-Star, taking home the $1 million prize for winning at North Wilkesboro Speedway. With 14 races completed this season, Bell is tied for the series lead with three wins and 10 top-10 finishes to go along with six top-fives, one pole award, and 147 laps led.

He’s racing into history!

On a Friday night in Nashville, 22-year-old Rajah Caruth made history once again, capturing his second career victory in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and reigniting a winning legacy for Spire Motorsports. The Washington, D.C. native took the checkered flag at the Nashville Superspeedway on May 30th, ending a 31-race winless streak for the No. 71 Chevrolet Silverado—and marking his first victory of the 2025 season, BET reports.

Caruth’s triumph didn’t just secure a win, it sent a message. After claiming the lead on pit road at the end of Stage 2, he never looked back, holding off fierce competitors Corey Heim and Layne Riggs by mere fractions of a second. Over the final 51 laps, Caruth drove with the kind of determination that champions are made of, finishing 0.518 seconds ahead of Heim and 0.629 seconds ahead of Riggs.

“I didn’t expect that at all,” Caruth said, breathless after the race. “Those guys were breathing down my neck the whole run. My pit crew won that race—Jarius, Zico, Dawson, Josh, Cody—they won that race for us. Thanks to them, thanks to everyone at HendrickCars.com, the men and women at Spire Motorsports. We’ve been off this year, but good to get a dub tonight, man. I’m out of breath.”

Caruth becomes only the third driver to notch multiple wins for Spire Motorsports in the Truck Series, joining NASCAR greats Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch. More than a win, this was a statement, a reminder that young Black talent is not only present in motorsports but pushing the sport into a new era.

“I was just asking myself, ‘How bad do you want it?’” Caruth shared. “I don’t know, I just tried my best and we had clean air and their stuff was better, but I just did my best. That was it.”

Corey Heim, who finished just behind him, echoed the sentiment. “But big congrats to Rajah. He did an awesome job managing from the lead… It’s nice racing against people that aren’t going to wreck you, racing for the race lead.”

Because of his victory, Caruth clinched a spot in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Playoffs, a huge milestone for the young driver who is steadily blazing a trail through a sport still learning how to fully embrace diversity.

The road ahead continues June 7th at Michigan International Speedway, where Caruth will carry not only momentum but the hopes of a new generation of fans who see themselves in every turn he takes.

Pocono Raceway President Ben May will have two new changes to account for as the NASCAR season quickly approaches the Tricky Triangle.

The track will be a part of a new in-season tournament for NASCAR, and the tournament will be broadcast with a new media partner: Amazon Prime. The two sides agreed to a deal worth $7.7 billion and will air five total races, including the three tournament preliminaries: Michigan, Mexico City and Pocono.

“What I think about the in-season tournament is that it starts right after the Prime window. So, something happening at our race is going to matter,” May told the Pocono Record. “What exactly? I don’t know, I guess we shall see. But I think it’s exciting to be a part of it.”

He compared the stakes to when Pocono Raceway hosted the race before the Craftsman Truck Series playoffs began a few years ago. May also follows the NBA, so he’s seen how the in-season tournament works for that league and is curious, along with the fans, on how it’ll play out en route to a driver winning the $1 million prize.

The in-season tournament is also the primary reason why the Great American Getaway 400 was moved up a month earlier compared to last year’s date of July 14.

And it wasn’t that the Triangle conveniently fell into a good spot ― Amazon Prime specifically wanted Pocono to be a part of the broadcast stretch.

“We were flattered Amazon Prime wanted us to be in their window, and we were happy to oblige,” May said. “There’s a small window here that works for Pocono. June 22 is as early as we can be. We liked the July date, but NASCAR asked, ‘What do you guys think about the June date?’ And that’s the conversation.”

Pocono Raceway had its second consecutive full facility sellout, which includes sponsorships for all the races, the grandstands, the suits and the campgrounds. So, it makes sense that Amazon would want the track on its network.

“‘We’re on fire here,” May said.

While talking with track CEO Nick Igdalsky, May now has to account for the peripheral events around the potential race date. What’s on the sporting calendar? Is school still in session so children can come? How can the date impact tourism, which is a driving force in the regional economy?

“It’s not just a Pocono Raceway thing, right? There’s a lot of factors involved, and the date fits,” May said. “I love anything after mid-June. We did early June for a long, long, long time, and it was a tight fit. Then you get deep into August and kids go back to school. So, there’s really about six weeks where we fit. We’d like to be in the same window going forward.”

May has also enjoyed the partnership with Amazon Prime as the two sides prepare for race weekend, from the site surveys to the virtual calls. It’s the first time NASCAR has partnered with a non-traditional medium, so there’s some inherent risk in the new venture.

Part of that risk is visibility ― not everyone has every streaming service. So how will viewership be affected with the Great American Getaway 400 not being on a traditional broadcast?

While the numbers on that are yet to be determined, it’s worth noting that more people have access to Prime Video than they realize.

“Amazon has made this point a few times that if you have a Prime subscription, you have access to Prime Video,” May said. “The connection is ‘Well I pay for my yearly subscription for Prime, I get free shipping on all my stuff, but that also includes a whole bunch of other added value in live sports entertainment.'”

Another factor that benefits Pocono Raceway is that it’s the last of the five races on Amazon Prime, with the two other tournament preliminaries, and Charlotte and Nashville before that. Prime Video also airs practice and qualifying all year.

So, there’s a long acclimation period to Prime Video that builds up to Pocono, which should make the visibility for the Tricky Triangle easier.

“To the question about how it’s going to be reported in terms of ratings, it’s going to be very, very interesting,” May said. “It’s also going to be interesting dealing with a non-traditional broadcast partner, because we’ve always had a race where the nightly news has to show. So, the race has got to be done before a certain time because people want to see the news. That doesn’t exist with Prime; it just lives in the streaming service and doesn’t have to end at a certain time.

“The whole concept is interesting. It’s been fun to learn.”
