Kyle Busch posts second NASCAR Cup Series Top-5 of 2025
Kyle Busch overcame a spin and a pit road penalty to match his highest finish of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series campaign Sunday at the Chicago Street Course.
Starting sixth, Busch finished fifth in the Grant Park 165, posting his second Top-5 of the season and first in 16 races.
“Our day started out pretty good,” Busch said. “We got a good jump on the initial start there and was able to roll forward and get to third.”
The Richard Childress Racing driver was able to finish Stage 1 in second, earning nine stage points.
Busch continued the race, electing to race as long as possible on his first set of tires.
“It didn’t fall into our favor,” Busch said. “That put us on old tires and I spun out getting into (Turn) 7 (during Stage 2). We just didn’t have any left-rear grip. That’s something we’ve struggled with on this car, and it just bit me there.”
Then, Busch received a penalty on Lap 38 for driving through more than three pit boxes, forcing Busch to serve a pass through penalty.
“We were able to rebound,” Busch said. “We pitted a couple of times there at the end and had some fresh tires late for some of the melee that was going on in front of us and made up some spots.
“Our Chevrolet was definitely a top-two or three car, but it’s good to come home with a Top-5 finish.”
Busch’s other fifth-place in 2025 finish came at the Circuit of the Americas road course in Austin in March.
With seven races remaining before the start of the playoffs, Busch has a 46-point deficit to the cutline.
Entering next weekend’s race at Sonoma Raceway, Busch has a 76-race winless streak, the longest of his career.
