  • Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin are co-favorites to win the NASCAR race at Michigan.
  • Odds for various drivers are provided, ranging from favorites to longshots.

It’s rare for us to trot out some breaking news here at the Odds Store.

But lordy, talk about odd! Kyle Larson isn’t the odds-on favorite for this weekend’s NASCAR race at Michigan.

But hold off on the pity or concern, and certainly don’t bake Kyle a ham.

Turns out, he’s the co-favorite, with Denny Hamlin. Neither has won at Michigan during the three previous seasons of Next Gen racing, but both post consistently strong finishes there (when not wrecked, as Kyle was last year).

Horsepower, you’d think, would play a big role every week in an auto-racing series. And it does, but at Michigan, it’s a very big factor. Why? Because the 2-mile oval, with 18-degree banking, is NASCAR’s fastest track.

Unlike the “plate tracks” — Daytona, Talladega and Atlanta — NASCAR doesn’t restrict speeds at Michigan. The 200 mph barrier has long been a magical number in stock-car racing. You should see it on the straights Sunday when the TV folks give us the in-car camera shots with telemetry.

Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson and other NASCAR betting faves

+525: Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson

+700: Ryan Blaney

+750: Tyler Reddick, William Byron

+1000: Christopher Bell

Of this group, Reddick is the only one to have won at Michigan in a Next Gen car. That win came last year. But in five other starts, he’s finished no better than 18th. Also, he’s had just one top-10 in two months, and that was a ninth last week.

Remember Chase Elliott? How about Kyle Busch?

+1400: Joey Logano, Chase Elliott

+1500: Ross Chastain

+1600: Carson Hocevar

+1750: Chris Buescher, Chase Briscoe

+2000: Kyle Busch

+2250: Brad Keselowski, Bubba Wallace

If Ricky Stenhouse decides to exact his revenge on Hocevar this week, it could get nasty, considering the aforementioned speeds at Michigan. Ricky might trend toward something more subtle and make Carson keep his head on a swivel for a few weeks before giving him the chrome horn.

A whiff of lost potential in this group of drivers

+3000: Josh Berry, Alex Bowman

+4000: Ty Gibbs

+5000: Ryan Preece, Austin Cindric

+6000: Erik Jones

+7500: Daniel Suarez

+10000: Michael McDowell, Zane Smith, Austin Dillon, AJ Allmendinger

Every week or two, you’re tempted to take a flier on Bowman because, you tell yourself, he just has to eventually win again, right? Then you look at his Michigan record (bad) and recent run of 2025 results (worse).

What to do with longshots? Maybe some top-10 action

+15000: Noah Gragson

+20000: Ricky Stenhouse Jr., John Hunter Nemechek

+25000: Shane van Gisbergen, Todd Gilliland, Justin Haley

+50000: Riley Herbst, Ty Dillon, Cole Custer

+100000: Cody Ware

Gragson is +525 for a top-10 at Hard Rock. Not the worst idea out there. As for van Gisbergen, don’t expect to see him here much in the coming weeks. Beginning next week in Mexico, three of the next five races are on road courses.

Odds from Hard Rock Bets.

It will be a busy week, with two different and exciting race programs scheduled for this week at Grandview Speedway!

The action packed week begins with the second Thunder on the Hill Racing Series event on Tuesday, June 17, as Levan Machine & Truck Equipment presents the 18th annual Jesse Hockett Classic, the opening event for the non-wing USAC National Sprint Car Series.

The Tuesday racing program will include time trials and qualifying events for the USAC Sprints leading up to the 40-lap feature event that pays $6000 to win. The program also includes the 358 Modifieds in a NASCAR point event, with qualifying events and a 30-lap $3000 to win feature, that could pay an added $2000 from Alpine Building Supply if the winning driver is a first time Thunder Series winner.

The Thunder on the Hill advance ticket process is in place for the Tuesday, June 17 USAC Sprint Car and 358 Modified double header. For advance tickets, please call 443-513-4456, leave your name and the number of tickets you need for June 17. You may pay for and pick up tickets at the Will Call Window after 4:15 pm, and enter the main grandstand gate at 4:30 pm.   General admission tickets go on sale at 5 pm. Adult grandstand tickets are $35, children 6 to 11 are $10 and children 5 and under will be admitted for free. Pit admission is $45 and a license is not required.

Grandview Speedway will then present a NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series program on Saturday, June 21 featuring the T.P. Trailer NASCAR Modifieds and the T.P. Truck Equipment NASCAR Sportsman.

The Saturday program will see the T.P. Truck Equipment Sportsman division in the spotlight, as they will be running a Twin 20-lap feature program for the first time in track history!

The June 21 race meet will include qualifying events for both classes leading into the Twin 20-lap features for the T.P. Truck Equipment Sportsman along with a 30-lap T.P. Trailer Modified feature.

Anyone having a rain check or pit wristband from May 17 may use them for the June 21 program, with ticket holders having to pay the added price (adults an extra $3, or students an extra $2, pit prices are the same). The June 21 event will be the last night to use the May 17 rainchecks.

Pit gates will open at 4 pm, with grandstand gates opening at 5:30 pm, warm-ups starting at 6:15 pm, and the first race of the evening getting the green flag at 7:30 pm.

Adult grandstand admission is $23, students 10-15 with ID are $12, while children ages 9 and under are admitted free of charge. Pit admission is $35 for NASCAR members and $45 for non-members.

Taking a look back at prior winners of the USAC Sprint event at Grandview Speedway, Levi Jones scored wins in 2007 and 2010, rain in 2008 and 2015, Jesse Hockett whom the race is named after in 2009, Bobby East in 2011, Bryan Clauson in 2012 and 2016, Daron Clayton in 2013, Chase Stockon in 2014, Brady Bacon in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022, no race due to the COVID shut down in 2020, Justin Grant in 2021, Jake Swanson in 2023, and local Allentown, Pa. star Briggs Danner in 2024.

The NASCAR 358 Modifieds joined the USAC sprints in an awesome double program starting in 2016, with with Rick Laubach scoring the win followed by Duane Howard in 2017, Ryan Godown in 2018, Ryan Watt in 2019, Jared Umbenhauer in 2021, Craig Von Dohren in 2022, Jeff Strunk in 2023, and Eric Kormann claiming the Alpine Building Supply first time Thunder Series winner bonus in 2024.

NASCAR’s Mexico City race: How a historic event overcame skepticism and delays

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Despite the handful of industry insiders too scared to leave their hotels in Mexico City, NASCAR’s first international Cup Series race of the modern era was a cultural experience that brought new fans to the series and provided its competitors with a chance to enjoy a new country.

The event had its detractors — rumors persisted for months that it would be canceled over security concerns or the escalating tensions between the United States and Mexico — and some NASCAR team members remained critical all the way through Sunday’s race.

But was it a success? Even with travel delays, hotel room snafus and confusion over shuttle transportation, it was unequivocally a shining moment for NASCAR.

“Every single thing about this weekend exceeded my expectations,” said Daniel Suarez, the Monterrey-born NASCAR driver who was the face of the three-day weekend. “The people, the fans, the sponsors, the excitement, the energy. I had expectations for this weekend… and I can tell you that I personally exceeded those expectations.”

The idea to try the road course at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez — host of one of the most popular Formula 1 events on that calendar — was the brainchild of Ben Kennedy, executive vice president and chief venue and racing innovations officer. The great-grandson of NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. has been aggressive in shaking up a schedule that went to the same tracks on the same weekends for decades.

Bringing the Cup Series to Mexico City — only the third race outside the U.S. in 77 years — was a chance to expose stock car racing to a new demographic and give Mexican fans their first chance to see the series race live.

“This was a historic moment for our sport, for Mexico, and for the global motorsports community,” Kennedy said after Shane Van Gisbergen won Sunday’s race to lock the New Zealander into the playoffs.

“One of the coolest parts about this weekend was seeing the reaction of the fans. I had the opportunity to go into the stands a few times,” he continued, “the energy and the passion of the fans here is unmatched.”

Kennedy said 90% of those in attendance were from Mexico, with 44% from Mexico City. Most important, there were “a lot of new fans coming out of this weekend.”

Will NASCAR return?

Even so, Kennedy could not guarantee another race in Mexico City. FIFA has World Cup games scheduled for this same week next year and there are the logistical issues of finding a date during a packed 38-week schedule.

The cars had to leave Michigan International Speedway immediately after last week’s race to make the 40-hour journey across the border, and now must get to Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania in time for this weekend’s race.

“I want to go everywhere in the world — England, Germany, South America, Australia, every where we can go,” said Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon, the vice chairman at Hendrick Motorsports. “The next thing that makes sense in Canada. But we have to figure out the schedule before we do too much of this.

“We can’t do this. Michigan, Mexico City, back to Pocono, can’t happen. We’re doing it and we’re excited to take on the challenge, but it’s going to wear on us and I don’t think we can do it all back-to-back. So we’ve got to make some adjustments to the schedule and how do we fit it all in into what’s already a very difficult schedule.”

Where will NASCAR go next?

Nothing is off the table for Kennedy, who is globally exploring where NASCAR can race and showcase its product.

One glaring issue: Those in the industry who remain comfortable with the same old schedule of traveling to Bristol, Tennessee, and Martinsville, Virginia, and Darlington Raceway in South Carolina twice a year.

While those markets are tied deeply to NASCAR’s Southern roots, there isn’t room for growth in playing to the same crowds over and over. The pushback on Mexico City didn’t come from any high-profile drivers, but Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s spotter had a scathing social media post ripping the city in which he said “screw this place, people can talk it up all they want” and 22-year-old driver Carson Hocevar had a similar sentiment in derisive comments on a live stream he has since walked back.

“Maybe a kid that had never been out of the country until Thursday should never give an opinion about what any place is like other than (hometown) Portage, Michigan,” Hocevar posted on social media. “I was skeptical about the trip and believed everything I read or heard about Mexico City from people who more than likely also had never been here.

“Now that I’ve actually left my hotel a couple times and raced here in front of some of the most passionate fans I’ve ever seen, my opinion has changed,” he continued. “I am embarrassed by my comments.”

A cultural field trip

This was baffling to some of the more well-traveled drivers, including Kyle Larson, who has raced at 200-plus different tracks around the world and makes annual trips to Australia and New Zealand. He also attended the 2021 Formula 1 season finale in Abu Dhabi and then vacationed in Dubai.

He likened Mexico City to a field trip for NASCAR because the drivers all stayed in the same hotels and rode buses together to the circuit each day. On a normal weekend, they are holed up in their motorhomes at the track and rarely venture out.

“It’s honestly really fun and enjoyable to be around your competitors and get to know each other a bit better because on a typical weekend, we just kind of lock ourselves in wherever we’re at,” he said. “We don’t talk to anybody or anything. So it’s nice that, yeah, you’re almost forced to hang out with each other. It’s cool. You get to know them, so I’ve enjoyed that.”

Even Kyle Busch, who was arrested in Mexico in 2023 for carrying a concealed weapon, was surprised by the few who had a negative response to racing in Mexico City.

“The food is amazing, the city has some of the top restaurants in the world,” Busch said. “This is a great place to be and I don’t understand the people holed up in their hotels too scared to leave. Live a little.”

Beachburg’s Nathan Blok nearly takes victory in Super Production Challenge season opener at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

BEACHBURG– The 2025 Super Production Challenge race series roared to life over Victoria Day weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, with Futec Motorsports debuting a new two-car operation.

Returning for his third straight season in the team’s Nissan 370Z, Beachburg native Nathan Blok was in top form from the outset, topping all three practice sessions with lap times a full half-second clear of his competition. But the damp conditions in qualifying threw a wrench into the mix for the rear-wheel-drive Z, relegating him to third on the grid for Race 1.

Meanwhile, Futec’s newest driver, rookie Natalie Humble of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, made a promising debut in the Compact class behind the wheel of a Nissan Micra. After a steady learning curve in Friday practice, she shined in the changing conditions during qualifying, grabbing a third-place start for her first-ever race.

Race 1 was cut short by lightning strikes, but not before Blok engaged in a tense duel with reigning champion Guillaume Lab(C)e. Despite setting the fastest lap, the series’ inverted grid rule placed Blok seventh for Race 2. What followed was a white-knuckle drive that saw Blok touch wheels with Michael Habrich at 180 km/h exiting Turn 1. With quick reflexes and no damage, Blok clawed his way back to a photo-finish second place, just 0.021 seconds behind winner Alexandre Fortin.

Race 3 served up another intense challenge as Blok squared off with former IndyCar star Alex Tagliani, trading positions in a heated midfield battle. After a race-long scrap, Blok ultimately finished sixth, closing the weekend in fifth overall in the Super Production standings.

“We definitely had the strongest car all weekend, but luck wasn’t totally on our side this time,” Blok said.

Great start for Humble

In the Compact class, Humble showed grit under pressure. She fended off veteran Patrik Wittmer and fellow rookie Jade Wilson in Race 1 to claim fourth. Race 2 saw her embroiled in another tight fight, finishing fifth after dicing with Wilson and Yannick Simard. Race 3 looked to be Humble’s breakout drive as she pulled a gap early — but a full-course yellow with 15 laps left neutralized her advantage. Wittmer capitalized on the restart, passing Humble who crossed the line in sixth at the checkered flag.

Still, it was a standout debut for the American newcomer, who ends the opening round fifth in the Compact standings and leading the Rookie of the Year points.

“Taking part in my first-ever race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park with the Futec Motorsports Team was an unforgettable experience,” Humble said. “I’m incredibly proud to represent a team that not only competes hard but looks sharp doing it, thanks to Precision Textiles for making us the best-looking crew in the paddock and on the pit wall. Huge thanks also to Shellbourne Fuels for keeping us running strong with their top-tier oil and fuel enhancer, and to Sunsign Graphics for making both the Micra and the 370Z stand out as the best-looking car on the grid. I’m grateful for the support and excited for what’s ahead.”

Heading east for round 2

Futec Motorsports now sets its sights on Round 2 at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, scheduled for June 20–22.

“Fortunately the track at Nova Scotia should suit our car much better, the Shellbourne fuels powered car performed flawlessly, so we should be in for a good recovery weekend in Nova Scotia,” Blok said.

Zach Sobotka has endured his share of heavy heart break in his time wheeling races in the Northeast. A shop fire decimated the team’s race program in 2022. His first CRSA win was taken away, coming up light on the scale.

But, where there was tragedy, triumph emerged. After the fire in February 2022, the team finished with a win in the Hurricane Harvey event at Brewerton during Super DIRT Week 50 and took third in the Chevy Performance 75 at Oswego Speedway.

And now, he has his CRSA Sprint win back. Sobotka won at Utica-Rome Speedway, claiming his first win in a sprint car. This one stood.

In all, it was a span of over 250 days since Sobotka weighed four pounds light at Utica-Rome in the sprint car.

To win, Sobotka had the unenviable task of holding off a charging Dillon Paddock over the final circuits. His win leaves him the 85th different winner in the CRSA Sprint history.

“Feels good to go through the scales,” Sobotka said in a release from CRSA. “Last year was a little bit of a bummer. I got a lot of modified experience and it was a good, racy track.”

Sobotka was on the front row for the 25-lap feature, racing to a sizable edge over Darryl Ruggles. Sobotka caught the tail of the field only eight circuits in, and he handled slower traffic well for 10 laps while maintaining a three-second advantage. That was wiped out on lap 18. Vince Chicklets spun in the second turn, drawing a yellow flag. Paddock went on a tear on the restart, marching to second from fourth and making a bid for the point. Chicklets went around again before a lap was completed, taking the charge off the board.

Paddock was at it again on the next restart attempt, settling into second. With six to go, Paddock began gaining on Sobotka, taking chunks of time out of his lead. Sobotka was hanging onto a thin advantage on the final lap, defending Paddock’s last-ditch momentum move on the high side.

“I could definitely hear him,” Sobotka said in the release. “I could tell he was on top and I almost went up there, going under the white. I led all 24 laps on the bottom down there, might as well try and get 25.”

Paddock posted his fourth straight podium with second, finishing ahead of Ruggles. Billy VanInwegen was fourth and Bobby Parrow took fifth. Paddock won the dash.

Sobotka has now won in a big block modified, a 305 sprint and a sportsman modified.

He won a modified feature in June of last year at Land of Legends Raceway.

His sportsman resume is even more remarkable. He has two wins in the Hurricane Harvey. He won the Industrial Tire Sportsman Shootout, leading all 50 laps of the Outlaw 200 Sportsman event in 2022. He won the Central Region points series in 2024.

He ranked in the top three in overall DIRTcar Sportsman Series points in 2024, ‘23, ‘22 and ‘21. In that stretch, he amassed 12 wins. Sobotka was the 2023 Brewerton Track Champion and a nine time winner at the oval. He has won the last three Sportsman crowns at Land of Legends Raceway, and has won 12 features since June of 2020.

His 2021 season was the most poignant. He finished as the overall points runner-up. His seven wins ranked second among drivers following the tour. He was third in the Mr. Sportsman Modified Hoosier Racing Tire Weekly Championship. And that year, he was the NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week champion in the sportsman division. He won early 2022, taking February’s South of the Border Showdown at Lake View (SC) Motor Speedway before the fire forced the team to reset for 2022.

The series will head to Fulton on June 21. For more, visit CRSASprints.com.

AREA RESULTS SATURDAY

At Oswego, Otto Sitterly won the 60-lap, $5,022-to-win Jim Shampine Memorial. The night was also renamed the Battle For Bruce, with many drivers and supporters holding No. 22 signage and signs. Bruce had a throttle malfunction, and struck the turn 1 foam and wall turning practice laps Friday.

Sitterly had nearly three seconds on the field as he took the opener over Michael Barnes and Dave Shullick Jr. Tyler Thompson and Josh Sokolic filled the top five. Noah Ratcliff scored the Small Block Super wins, taking the 35-lap feature over Drew Pascuzzi and Cameron Rowe. Carter Gates and Alex Hoag filled the top five. Johnny Bennet won the 25-lap Super Stock feature, holding off Jim Steffenhagen Jr. and Garrett Zacharias. Andy Cryan and Barrett Schenk filled the top five.

At Fulton Speedway, Billy Dunn posted the win over Pat Ward and Ronnie Davis III in the 35-lap Modified feature. Marshall Hurd and Lance Willix III finished with top fives. Brett Sears won the Sportsman 25-lapper over Kyle Perry and Clayton Brewer. Emmett Waldron raced to fourth ahead of Cody Manitta. Andrew Eaton won the Novice Sportsman feature. John Pietrowicz took the Hobby Stock win over Brennan Fitzgibbons and Ron Hawker.

Peter Britten bolted his quarter panels onto Rich Scagliotta’s back-up car and wheeled the car to the win at Land of Legends Raceway. Britten took home $2,000 for the 30-lap win over Mat Williamson and Erick Rudolph. Matt Sheppard and Kyle Coffey filled the top five. Justin Leichti took home the 25-lap Sportsman feature with a win over Tim Lafler and Tim Baker; Karl Comfort and Tyler Guzzardi were next in the top five. Jordan Hutton won the 20-lap 305 Sprint feature with Bobby Parrow, Dillon Paddock, Zach Sobotka and John Smith in order. Jimmy Grant won the Street Stock feature over Rick Crego and Mike Welch; CJ Guererri and Shane Wolfe Jr. filled the top five. Mark Minutolo bested Jared Hill and Frank Burnell to win the Hobby Stock 15-lap feature. Blane Smith was next with Tyler Burnell taking fifth. Kyle Ridley won the New Legends Sportsman feature.

At Thunder Mountain Speedway, Brandon Loucks won the Modified 35-lap feature over Jimmy Zacharias and Cody Higbie. Matt Brewer collected the Sportsman checkers ahead of TJ Frost and Randy Brokaw. Earl Zimmer won the IMCA Modified feature. Jerry Lobdell (Factory Stock), Ivan Forney (600 sprints) and Tyler Talada (600cc Modified) earned class wins.

FRIDAY

At Can-Am Speedway, Shaun Shaw won from third place on the initial start, taking the 358-Modified feature over Lance Willix and Ryan Bartlett. Tim Fuller raced to fourth after 25-laps of work, and Andrew Howard was fifth. Tyler Stevenson took the Sportsman division checkers, winning the 20-lap feature over Gavin Eisele and Eric Neir. Richard Murtaugh and Mike Fowler were credited with top fives. Andrew Hennessy was triumphant in the 20-lap Crate Sprint feature, topping Bruno Richard and Ken Klinkowski.
