(AP) – KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kyle Larson took most of the drama out of his second straight spring victory at Kansas Speedway on Sunday.

After putting his No. 5 car on the pole for Hendrick Motorsports, Larson led 221 of 267 laps, winning both stages and cruising to his third NASCAR Cup Series win of the season. He was never challenged down the stretch by second-finishing Christopher Bell — and he most certainly didn’t need another last-lap pass to win at the wire like he did a year ago.

The margin over Chris Buescher then was 0.001 seconds, the closest in Cup Series history. It was 0.712 seconds on Sunday.

“Glad to not win by an inch this time,” Larson said with a smile. “A little safer gap.”

Larson, who also has wins at Homestead and Bristol, has finished in the top four in each of his past four Cup Series races, and now he will take that momentum to Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Larson will be on track Tuesday as he begins another shot at “the Double” — running every lap of the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day Memorial Day weekend.

Last year, he contended in the rain-delayed Indy 500 before a speeding penalty on pit road resulted in an 18th-place finish. He then hopped a flight to Charlotte for the NASCAR race, but rain there kept him from ever completing a lap.

“It’s a cool win here at Kansas,” Larson said in victory lane, “and now we’ll try to execute two good weeks at Indy.”

Even though Larson spent most of a hot, sunny day at Kansas in the lead, he found himself trailing Chase Elliott early in the final stage. But when Elliott’s team dropped the jack too soon before his right rear tire was on during a pit stop, Larson was able to get back to the front on the restart, and he spent the last 50 laps cruising to the checkered flag.

Bell, a three-time winner already, finished in the top three for the sixth time this season. Ryan Blaney came in third, giving Team Penske another good run after Austin Cindric won two weeks ago at Talladega and Joey Logano won last week at Texas.

“I was just trying to get to the end. I know Ryan was coming on really strong there,” Bell said. “I feel like our day was kind of a product of qualifying well and having good pit stops and restarts.”

Blaney knew he was coming on strong, too, but he was left to lament what might have been.

“We were kind of running those guys down quick,” Blaney said. “A few more laps, I would have scared the 5 a bit at least.”

Chase Briscoe finished fourth and Larson’s teammate Alex Bowman rounded out the top five.

Brad Keselowski looked as if he might finally have his first top-10 finish this season. He started from the rear but steadily made his way forward, and the 2012 series champion had moved into second behind Elliott when his right rear went down with 72 laps to go. Keselowski wound up in the wall, ending his hopes of contending.

“I mean, it was going to be a great day,” Keselowski said. ”I heard a big boom and around it went. It’s unfortunate.”

Denny Hamlin also had a fast car all afternoon, but he wound up fighting a clutch problem that made pitting a nightmare. He was still running with the leaders before Keselowski’s caution, when yet more clutch trouble finally ruined his day.

“Really fast again,” Hamlin said. “Just can’t keep it together right now.”

Green and yellow

There had been only one non-stage caution before Keselowski hit the wall. Cody Ware, Daniel Suarez and Ty Dillon brought out another in a wreck on the restart; Kyle Busch was bumped and spun to bring out another yellow on the next restart; and Justin Haley, Erik Jones and Bubba Wallace were involved in another wreck on a third consecutive restart.

Odds and ends

Larson won for the 32nd time, and joined Hamlin and Busch as the only active Cup Series drivers to have led more than 10,000 laps. … Briscoe was fourth for the fourth time this season. He has yet to finish better. … Larson made it three straight wins for Chevrolet at Kansas Speedway. Ross Chastain won the fall race last season. … Hamlin’s streak of seven straight top-10s at Kansas ended. He finished 36th. … Logano challenged for second late in the race before finishing ninth.

Up next

The All-Star Race is up next Sunday at North Wilkesboro, where Logano is the defending champ. There are changes to the format this year, including an optional promoter’s caution flag, which could dramatically reshape the 250-lap race.

INDYCAR is also suspending the team strategists for Newgarden and Power for the remainder of the Indy 500.

SPEEDWAY, Ind. — Two-time defending Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden and 2018 winner Will Power will now start at the end of the grid Sunday after failing a tech inspection during qualifying.

INDYCAR announced the Team Penske drivers will start 32nd and 33rd in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing on May 25 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway after they were in violation of INDYCAR Rule 14.7.8.16.

After locking out the front row in 2024, none of the Penske cars turned a lap during Sunday’s “Fast Twelve” session.

Scott McLaughlin’s team elected to not even attempt to qualify after McLaughlin crashed heavily during the morning practice session, necessitating repairs. The car would likely not be ready in time for qualifying, and the team opted to be safe rather than sorry.

Later, after “Fast Twelve” qualifying began, the Penske cars of Power and Newgarden abruptly pulled out of line and headed back to Gasoline Alley. IndyCar announced that the two cars had failed pre-qualifying tech inspection and would not be allowed to qualify.

“The integrity of the Indianapolis 500 is paramount, and this violation of the INDYCAR rule against modification to this part and using it ‘as supplied’ is clear,” INDYCAR President J. Douglas Boles said. “The penalty should be more than simply starting where the cars might have qualified anyway, if given the opportunity. The cars belong in the field as two of the fastest 33; however, starting on the tail of the field is the appropriate penalty in this instance.”

McLaughlin will still start in the 10th spot after INDYCAR found that the car was using a legal and unmodified attenuator. This is the final spot for those who qualified to participate in the “Fast Twelve.”

Also, INDYCAR is suspending Newgarden and Power’s team strategists for the rest of the Indy 500, and both drivers will forfeit Indy 500 qualification points and have been fined $100,000.

Newgarden and Power will forfeit their pit positions and will select their pit boxes after the remainder of the field has an opportunity to adjust accordingly.

IndyCar officials found something amiss with the rear attenuator on Josef Newgarden’s No. 2 Chevrolet. Will Power’s No. 12 Chevrolet had the same issue, but was already sitting in the pit lane. Penske decided to work on the cars, believing they could rectify the problem and still qualify without issue, but that was not the case.

In the end, both cars were pulled out of line and took no further part in qualifying. They, along with Scott McLaughlin who crashed heavily in Sunday morning practice, will share Row 4 (10th – 12th) on the grid. But O’Ward thinks the immediate punishment should have been far more severe.

“They weren’t accidentally doing it because they had the blowtorch right there in order to get it out,” said O’Ward. “Honestly, I feel for [Jacob] Abel and for everybody that did the last chance qualifying. Those (Penske) cars weren’t in regulations.”

Rookie Jacob Abel was the lone driver who failed to qualify for the Indy 500, losing out in the LCQ to Rinus VeeKay, Marcus Armstrong, and Marco Andretti. Meanwhile, all three Penske cars were fast enough for the Fast 12 via their efforts on Saturday.

“I’m not an engineer, so I can’t tell you what they were doing, how much speed that it is or if it is any speed,” continued O’Ward. “Obviously it’s not in regulation. The rule is pretty black and white. Those cars should have been in the last chance qualifier. Like, those cars should have never — obviously they didn’t do anything in the Fast 12, but they should have been brought into the LCQ because they had that yesterday, I guarantee you. Until someone pointed it out today. Those cars, if they’re disqualified today, they should have been disqualified yesterday.

“It’s a shame really because they don’t need to be doing that stuff. They’re a great team. They have got great drivers. Why are doing that? It makes no sense.”

Green flag, Chastain makes it three wide for the lead into turn two. A lap later, Keselowski is clear for the lead.

249 to go, Chase Elliott works to the outside of Christopher Bell in the battle for 2nd. Joey Logano sticks his nose in there to make it three wide for 2nd. Laps later, Logano wins the battle.

245 to go, Logano works the inside lane. He pulls even with Keselowski but he can’t complete the pass.

194 to go, Daniel Suarez is in the outside wall, caution.

Green, Keselowski clears Byron before turn one. Kyle Busch rolls the top and he works to the right rear of Keselowski. Byron run the inside, three wide for the lead! Laps later, Byron wins the battle and takes the lead away.

171 to go, Logano runs Byron wide, Logano to the lead!

For the first time since the race was held exclusively at Charlotte Motor Speedway, the NASCAR All-Star Race is being contested at the same venue for the third year in a row.

The Cup Series returned to North Wilkesboro Speedway in 2023 for the first time since 1996, and while there continue to be calls for the four-turn, 0.625-mile (1.006-kilometer) North Wilkesboro, North Carolina oval to host a points race for the first time in nearly three decades, it is once again back as the host of the All-Star Race in 2025.

There were 20 drivers who entered the weekend locked into the race, having met one (or more) of the following criteria: Cup Series race winner in 2024 or 2025, former Cup Series champion (among full-time drivers), or former All-Star Race winner (among full-time drivers).

The top two drivers in Sunday’s 100-lap All-Star Open also advanced to the 250-lap main event, as did the winner of the Fan Vote. The 20 drivers already locked in secured their starting positions with a unique three-lap, pit stop challenge qualifying format, which split the field into two 75-lap heat races.

RFK Racing’s Brad Keselowski was the fastest qualifier, and he took the pole position even before he won his heat race. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell won the other heat race.

NASCAR Cup Series drivers Ty Dillon and Zane Smith built up some tension between themselves during All-Star Race festivities at North Wilkesboro Speedway on Sunday night.

Dillon finished in third place in the All-Star Open, six spots ahead of Smith. Unfortunately, neither driver made it to the final All-Star Race as Carson Hocevar and John Hunter Nemechek finished first and second, respectively, and earned a shot to win the $1 million grand prize.

Dillon took issue with how Smith was driving and suggested it cost him a spot in the final race of the night. He was asked what he told Smith after the race.

“Coming off (Turn) 4, I think I gave him plenty of room, and he just doors me halfway down the straightaway. … There’s something about the younger guys in the sport now. They never had to deal with consequences,” he said, via Dirty Mo Media.

“So, what I told him was if he wrecks me again, I’m just gonna beat his a–.”

Smith responded in a post on X.

“Ain’t beating nobody’s a–,” he wrote.

The next race for the NASCAR Cup Series is the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Sunday night. It was one of the most anticipated races on the Cup Series schedule.

All eyes will be on Dillon and Smith to see if there’s any kind of retaliation.

Smith is ahead of Dillon in the points standings going into the race. He sits at 22nd, and Dillon is in 30th.
