Saturday afternoon in double-overtime after 11 cautions, 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson claimed his second win of the year in NASCAR’s second-tier series as an unexpected ringer for JR Motorsports.

Midweek, Kyle Larson got the call asking him to sub in for Connor Zilisch in the JR Motorsports No. 88 for the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 at Texas Motor Speedway. Zilisch suffered a back injury on the final lap at Talladega last week, and while he was first reported to be just sore and OK to race, his team came to the decision to have him sit out the week heading into the Xfinity Series break.

Ultimately, Larson would lead 32 of 208 laps to beat Sam Mayer to the line by 1.265 seconds.

Austin Hill and Justin Allgaier were the Xfinity Series’ best chance of keeping Larson at bay. Kyle Larson recently shared that when he races in the Xfinity Series, his goal is to embarrass the full-time drivers to prepare them for the next level.

In the final stage, Justin Allgaier was the first big contender to lose their chance after leading 99 laps and winning the opening stage. Allgaier was coming up on Chris Wright several laps down when Wright changed his line multiple times, and Allgaier had no chance of avoiding the much slower car.

With Allgaier out of the way, Larson won the restart against Austin Hill and was pulling away in the final stage when more drivers started getting snake-bit by the Texas track.

Hill fell to Nick Sanchez, and Larson pulled away to six seconds ahead of the field, With 15 laps remaining, Hill gets by Sanchez to try and reel in Larson. Hill secured his sixth stage win, the most of any driver in the Xfinity Series this season.

With 12 laps in regulation, Corey Day crashed from a top 15-spot,

and Larson’s No. 88 team decided that tires were more important than position. Sanchez and Hill both stayed out. Larson restarted seventh and was in fourth by the first turn, pushing Sam Mayer to the lead by the backstretch and almost securing second when he went too high and fell back to fourth, then passed for third before the 10th caution flag waved this time for Sammy Smith getting into the wall.

Smith had rebounded from an accident on lap seven to be running in the top ten at the end of regulation. On the restart, Sanchez took the outside in order to keep Larson away from the front row and maybe secure help from the Cup Series vet in pushing him to his first Xfinity Series win and only the second win for Big Machine Racing.

Larson made it by Sanchez and was firmly in second when Jeremy Clements hit the wall, bringing on double overtime.

Tanner Gray started behind Mayer and Sanchez behind Larson on the final restart. Gray drove into Mayer’s back bumper, causing too much wiggle. Larson was easily able to take the lead with his fresh tires from the Day caution 16 laps earlier. The white flag secured Larson’s lead and the checkered flag his victory.

“There was a lot of survival throughout that race, dodging some wrecks, balance we had to work on quite a bit,” Larson told The CW Sports’ Kim Coon. “It was fun, I felt like my car, if I could ever get to the lead, I could stretch out. I just couldn’t get by Justin; he was doing a good job of running where I needed to be.”

Larson added that he wished that Connor would’ve been able to experience that race, but was happy to be the one trusted with the call.

“Obviously, I wish Connor were in the car, but it means a lot that they thought of me to call up to run this thing,” Larson added.

  • With a $1 million payday on the line, McDowell hopes to improve on his season-best short track finish of 12th at Martinsville Speedway. • Spire Motorsports will host a small media event on Thursday, May 15 to unveil this year’s Coca-Cola 600 scheme. Media members interested in attending should contact, jpayne@spire-motorsports.com to RSVP.

Michael McDowell Quote:
Does the All-Star Race take some of the pressure off from a normal race weekend?
“It’s fun to have a couple of weeks at home and have more shop friends, family and crew members there. As far as it being a pressure-free weekend—it’s not. It really isn’t, because you want to win. You want to make it into the All-Star Race.

“We were a few laps away from not having to think about the Open race in Texas, but North Wilkesboro is a fun weekend. It’s a cool racetrack. It feels like a little time capsule, and you get back to some of the grassroots that we have. The scoreboard there, the walls, the fans – it’s just fun. It’s a cool place, and we look forward to the weekend.”

Talk about the importance of qualifying well at short tracks.
“You’re racing for the top two spots, so every lap counts and everything matters. We saw that. We were close to racing our way in a couple of years ago. Just like every weekend, you have to qualify well, and you’ve got to have a good car because everybody’s so close. It’s an elbows-out kind of grind for sure. You always have the fan vote to fall back on, but I’ve never put a lot of emphasis on that. I did when I drove the No. 95. They did a little campaign because they wanted to have some fun. I love my fans. I have great fans. Obviously, I’ve been doing this a long time, and I’m super appreciative. But I’m also that guy who would just rather earn it on merit, so we’ll see what happens this weekend.”

Atop the No. 71 Box – Crew Chief Travis Peterson

  • Crew chief Travis Peterson celebrated his 34th birthday last weekend at Kansas Speedway and led the Spire Motorsports contingency with an 11th-place qualifying effort.
  • The University of North Carolina at Charlotte graduate led McDowell to a ninth-place finish in last season’s NASCAR All Star Race.

Carson Hocevar – Driver, No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet ZL1

  • Spire Motorsports driver Carson Hocevar will pilot the No. 77 Indy25 Chevrolet ZL1 in his second All-Star Open appearance. The Portage, Mich., native started and finished 10th in the 2024 All-Star Open, coming up short in his bid to advance to the feature event.
  • Spire Motorsports and Gainbridge® have partnered with the WNBA All-Star 2025 Host Committee to feature the “Indy25” logo in recognition of AT&T WNBA All-Star 2025 taking place in Indianapolis. Gainbridge Fieldhouse, home of the Indiana Fever, will be the site of the 21st edition of the WNBA All-Star Game, as well as the WNBA STARRY 3-Point Contest and WNBA Skills Challenge July 18-19.
  • Last Saturday at Kansas Speedway, Hocevar drove the No. 7 Delaware Life Chevrolet Silverado RST to victory in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. It was his first victory in two starts this season and fifth overall. Hocevar started 22nd in the No. 77 Delaware Life Chevy in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race, led laps in the second stage and was tracking a top-10 finish before a flat tire forced the team to pit with less than 20 laps remaining.
  • The 2024 Rookie of the Year earned top-20 finishes in the two points-paying races held so far on tracks less than a mile. He also had a strong showing in the Clash at Bowman-Gray Stadium.
  • Hocevar is currently in the top-five in the All-Star Fan Vote, just three days before the Cup Series drivers take to the track for practice and qualifying at the famed North Wilkesboro Speedway.

Carson Hocevar Quotes
North Wilkesboro has hosted racing since before the sports’ inception. What does it mean to you to have the chance to compete on such hallowed grounds?
“Any time we can go to tracks that have a long history in the sport, it means a lot. North Wilkesboro was no longer on the schedule when I was younger, but I love racing and I’ve seen the old footage of the races there. It’s a place that is so important to the history of stock car racing and to see it brought back to life, and hosting the Cup Series, is really cool. I’m thankful that it’s something I get to be part of.”

Last year you put in a lot of effort to garner fan votes to advance to the All-Star Race, but this year you’ve been a bit quieter. Does that change in approach reflect the confidence you have in yourself to advance on track?
“I think so. I was a rookie last year, I didn’t have a lot of experience and I knew going in how tough guys race when there’s money on the line. I leaned on my personality a lot, but I feel like people know who I am now. We’ve had some really good runs and we get better each week. The No. 77 team has shown a lot of improvement on the short tracks and I think we learned a lot last year that will help us this time around.”

Atop the No. 77 Box – Crew Chief Luke Lambert

  • In 2023, crew chief Luke Lambert led Noah Gragson to a seventh-place finish in the All-Star Open at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Gragson earned the Fan Vote to advance to his first All-Star Race.
  • In 68 points-paying races contended on short tracks, Lambert has led his drivers to four top-five and 18 top-10 finishes, with 58 laps led.

Kyle Larson called Tuesday’s opening day of practice for the Indianapolis 500 “a nice … smooth day” and that he was “happy with the first day” at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Larson, the Cup points leader, seeks to become the first driver since 2014 and only the second driver in the last 20 years to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 in the same day. He sought to do both last year but rain thwarted his effort, delaying the Indy 500 by four hours. That prevented him from getting into the car for the Coca-Cola 600 before rain ended that event early.

IndyCar: Miller Lite Carb Day

Several challenges, including a new NASCAR rule, make the feat of running in those signature races in the same day much more difficult.

Tuesday, Larson was 24th on the overall speed chart with a top lap of 221.207 mph. He ran 45 laps. Will Power was the fastest in the session, which was shortened by rain and lightning, with a lap of 227.026 mph. Two-time defending Indy 500 winner Josef Newgarden was next at 226.971 mph. Both Power and Newgarden drive for Team Penske.

Larson was better in single-car speed, ranking 13th in non-tow speed (no aerodynamic assistance from a car ahead) with a lap of 217.752 mph. Kyle Kirkwood ranked first at 219.497 mph.

Tuesday was Larson’s first time in his Arrow McLaren ride since last month’s open test that saw him hit the wall, ending his day early.

As for opening day of practice, Larson said: “Our day was good. Kind of took it easy to start in clean air, made sure our balance was comfortable, which it was, so was happy about that.

“Just there at the end (of the session), kind of finally got in some traffic and, as normal, kind of had some understeer. Just happy with the first day.”

NASCAR: AdventHealth 400

With six of the 14 races left in the regular season on either road courses or drafting tracks, the standings could change dramatically by late August.

Practice continues through Friday. Qualifying takes place Saturday and Sunday. Should Larson advanced to the Fast Six in qualifying, that group is scheduled to go for the pole between 6:25 – 6:55 p.m. ET Sunday. The NASCAR All-Star Race is scheduled to begin around 8 p.m. ET Sunday.

Larson told reporters earlier this month at Texas that the priority would be the All-Star Race instead of going for the Indianapolis 500 pole in such a scenario.

Larson, a three-time All-Star winner, was asked after Tuesday’s practice session about that decision.

“I think just always for me and definitely for Rick and Hendrick Motorsports, I think no matter through this whole experience, especially this year, Cup should be the priority,” Larson said. “I just assume we’re going to run the All-Star Race no matter what.

“Hopefully, we run into that predicament because that means our car is fast and, two, yes, it would be extremely nice to go for the pole at the Indianapolis 500, but, at the same time, it’s hard to turn down an opportunity to race for a million dollars (in the All-Star Race).”

While he has the All-Star Race this weekend, Larson said Tuesday that his focus is on his Indy ride for now. It’s easy to do with the Cup team he has at Hendrick Motorsports.

“It’s nice that we are so well organized over that I can completely shut myself off from them for a handful of days to really try to learn this and get prepared for the 500,” Larson said. “There’s just a lot that is a little bit unfamiliar that you’ve got to get re-familiarized with this week.”

In a surprise twist few saw coming, this year’s NASCAR All-Star Race is helping promote the 2025 WNBA All-Star Weekend in Indianapolis.

A brand-new paint job on Carson Hocevar’s No. 77 car, shown off just days before race day, now sports a massive WNBA All-Star logo on the hood, turning heads and starting conversations across two major sports worlds.

The move is part of a bold marketing push by Spire Motorsports, Gainbridge and the WNBA All-Star 2025 Host Committee.

Their goal is to connect basketball fans with racing fans and get people buzzing about the WNBA’s biggest event of the year, which will take place July 18–19 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Indiana Pacers and Fever reporter Scott Agness was the first to show off the look, sharing a photo on X.

This past weekend, he repeated that feat with win and a runner-up at Xtreme Raceway Park in his Mazda Miata.

2 – Keaton Overstreet

Keaton Overstreet is a close second this week after winning twice in three finals in the last two weekends. A week ago Overstreet won a $7,000 race and this past weekend he won $5K on the bottom and added a runner-up finish in Top.

Casey Baugh was the lone motorcycle racer at the Twin 50’s but that didn’t stop him from showing out. Charlie Lockhart and family entered four classes at Gleason and they ended up in four finals! Charlie finished the day with a pair of runner-up finishes (Top & No Box) to secure a Top 10 showing.

10 – TB Promotions Twin 50’s Runner-Ups

We close the Top 10 this week with the Twin 50’s runner-ups. Caden Meuth led the way making the split at 10 cars on Friday and then finishing with runner-up on Saturday. Tim Foley made the final round in the dragster race and John Labbous Jr. was runner-up to Mark Buttrum in Friday’s $50K.
