Adam Hanson was state champion in the varsity male 109+ class, with his 125kg total topping second-place Carter Wendorff by 12kg. Hanson’s top lifts were 95kg in the snatch and 125kg in the clean and jerk. Ethan Vossen of Sartell won the 73kg division with a 211kg total. Also competing and placing for South were Carter Wendorff (second), Grant Mayer (second), Jayden Mongeon (second), Pierce McKenzie (third), Kaleb Williams (fourth), Owen Eicher (fifth) and Hayden Egner. Sam Schulz, competing for Lakeville North, placed third in the junior varsity 81kg weight class. Twenty-six athletes from Lakeville – 24 from Lakeville South and two from Lakeville North – were among the 119 qualifiers for the 2025 state meet. Lakeville North had one state champion and 20 of the 26 Lakeville athletes earned medals for top-three finishes. Lakeville South’s junior varsity team finished second to Moorhead after winning the division the previous six years. In the junior varsity division, Addison Eicher led the way for Lakeville South with her second state individual championship. Competing in the 64kg weight class this year, her final clean and jerk lift was a state-record 83 kg, and she finished with a 143kg total. In weightlifting, varsity and junior varsity classifications are determined by age. Athletes 17 and older compete in the varsity division and those 16 and younger are in the junior varsity division. Each division has 10 male and 10 female weight classes. Team champions are determined based on points awarded to male and female lifters for top finishes in their weight classes. Lakeville South scored 56 points in the varsity division, 20 more than runner-up Northfield. Eagan placed fourth with 18 points. Moorhead scored 40 points to win the junior varsity division, four more than Lakeville South. Burnsville and Rosemount athletes also competed in the JV division. She went up to 77kg on her final try and hit it, which she needed to stay ahead of Tartan’s Kya Berry, who placed second with a 136kg total. Minnesota high school weightlifting competition consists of three snatch attempts and three clean-and-jerk attempts, with the best attempt in each of the two lifts combined to become an athlete’s score. Athletes reach the state meet by hitting an automatic qualifying total, or by reaching 85 percent of the automatic total and having a top-three ranking at the end of the regular season. Burnsville Lakeville South seniors Alyssa Buchanan and Emily Zeien finished their lifting careers with a second and third place, respectively. Junior Chloe Krinkie took second in the 81kg class, totaling 125kg. The Lakeville South Weightlifting Team is led by captains Sarah Banitt, Alyssa Buchanan, Emily Zeien, Chloe Krinkie, Hayden Egner, Carter Wendorff and Elijah Hathaway. Scott Sahli is head coach and Dirk Wells, Ben Burk, Jordan Strand, Ryan Lantz and Chris Rousemiller are assistant coaches. Allison Hoolahan had a 107kg total to win the junior varsity female 81+ weight class. Sawyer Haglund was 1kg short of a state championship in the varsity male 73kg division, totaling 210kg. His best lifts were 95kg in the snatch and 115kg in the clean and jerk. Haglund will compete in the USA Weightlifting National Championships in June. The Wildcats’ Lila Volovsek is a state champion in the varsity female 71kg division with a 138kg total. Hathaway was in the varsity male 67kg division, considered one of the toughest classes at the state meet. After missing on his first two clean and jerk attempts, he lifted 103kg on his final try to clinch the championship with a 188kg total. Indigo Benner of Eagan finished third in the varsity female 81kg division with a 121kg total. Peyton Grandbois had a 204kg total to finish third in the varsity male 109+ class. Rosemount Eagan The Cougars’ Carter Mayer sustained a hand injury at the end of football season and was unable to compete in a regular season meet, but qualified for state based on his performance in the 2024 state meet. He continued to train through the season doing one-armed competition lifts. After receiving medical clearance one week before the state meet, Mayer eased into his full competition lifts. At state, he hit four of six lifts and placed third in the varsity 96kg division. Lakeville North’s Landon Schulz, in his first year in the varsity division, won the 102kg class with a 245kg total. He will compete in the USA Weightlifting National Championships in June in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Lakeville South and North highlights included juniors Kacie Cordova, Hannah Ebbighausen and Elijah Hathaway, and sophomore Tegan Bishop, winning their weight classes and individual state championships. Cordova competed in the varsity 45-kilogram class and lifted 86kg to win the title. Bishop competed at varsity 59kg and totaled 106kg to place first. Ebbighausen, in the 64Kg class, totaled 123Kg for her win. Also competing and placing for South in JV were Lauren Hawkins (fourth), Garrett Stewart (second), Ellis Wohlhuter (second), Bryce Niedzielski (fourth) and Helen Jager. Lakeville South won its sixth consecutive varsity division team championship and had eight individual champions at the 2025 Minnesota High School Weightlifting State Championships on March 8 in Cannon Falls. South’s Anjalie Lor closed her first weightlifting season by winning the 81kg category. Jake Johnson, also in his first year, took home a state championship in the 49kg class with a 108kg total. Tyler Havron pulled out the victory in a tough 102+ weight class with a 175kg total. Lauren Bachmeier was runner-up in the varsity female 76kg division, lifting 119kg. Also in the varsity division, Gerardo Camacho placed second in the male 96kg division with a 211kg total. South is team champion for sixth consecutive year
