The historic raceway was sold to the International Hot Rod Association.

TRENDING STORIES:

Kil-Kare was first built by the Marshall Brothers and first opened up as a 1/5-mile dirt track in 1951.

The quarter-mile dragway opened in 1959, which made Kil-Kare a premier facility for both stock car and drag racing.

Recent improvements to the drag strip include an all-concrete racing surface with concrete walls, an Accutime timing system, bigger staging lanes, restroom facilities, and concession stands featuring the popular brick oven pizza.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 27, 2025) – Garner Trucking, the Official Transportation Partner of Spire Motorsports since 2023, will serve as Justin Haley’s primary sponsor in back-to-back NASCAR Cup Series races beginning with Sunday’s Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway.

The Garner Trucking livery will return to the primary position aboard Haley’s No. 7 Chevrolet ZL1 the following weekend for the FireKeepers 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

Garner Trucking is celebrating its 65th anniversary in 2025 and provides Spire Motorsports with the semi tractors the team utilizes to transport its equipment across the country. The family-owned and -operated business was started in 1960 by Vern and Jean Garner. Headquartered in Findlay, Ohio, Garner Trucking is highly regarded in the industry for its excellent safety record and on-time delivery performance. Dale Earnhardt Jr. issued a swift apology after a mistake during his commentary during the first NASCAR race aired live on Amazon Prime Video.

The iconic ex-driver has returned to commentating after a hiatus, being joined on the Amazon team by another Hall of Famer, Carl Edwards, as the streaming service kicks off a five-race stretch. The move generated significant excitement and the new-look team was widely praised during its first broadcast.

However, Earnhardt Jr. experienced a hiccup during the Coca-Cola 600’s first stage when he incorrectly announced that Kyle Larson had a tire come off shortly after spinning from the race lead. Earlier in the day, Larson had already faced disappointment with a crash at the Indy 500, and then he triggered the day’s first caution after losing control on lap 43 coming out of turn four.

The incident led most drivers to pit road, and as they lined up under the yellow flag for a restart, a stray tire was spotted rolling along the track. Earnhardt Jr., quick to notice from the booth, mistakenly attributed the loose tire to Larson’s vehicle.

He exclaimed, “Oh we’ve got a problem down at turn four,” adding, “I think Larson has lost a tire…I believe that’s come off the 5.”

However, he quickly corrected himself upon realizing that Larson’s car was in good shape. He then mistakenly identified Cody Ware’s No.51 as the problematic vehicle before finally correctly identifying it as Josh Bilicki’s No. 66.

“No, not the five, the 51, sorry about that. No the 66, sorry, I’ll get it,” Earnhardt Jr. clarified.

The same incident, as well as on-board footage of Denny Hamlin fighting to control his car around turns three and four at Charlotte Motor Speedway, later prompted Edwards to admit he was “embarrassed” at the end of Stage 1.

Edwards, who is only just returning to NASCAR having kept his distance from the sport since abruptly retiring after the 2016 season, conceded he was “wrong” about the new NextGen car compared to his own experiences.

Edwards said: “Alright, I’m embarrassed,” Edwards declared. “I’m plain embarrassed because 104 laps in to my back to NASCAR experience, I was wrong.

“I thought these cars were simpler, easier to drive. It was harder in my day. Guys, the guys in the booth have described it perfectly, Letarte and Dale.

“Showing Denny’s in-car, his focus, his eyes…guys spinning out, Kyle Larson, Alex Bowman. It is tough and I think that’s the story right now.”

Prior to the broadcast, Earnhardt Jr. expressed his enthusiasm for the first race of the new Amazon deal, marking his return to the commentary booth after a stint with NBC from 2018 to 2023.

He shared: “We had a little practice rehearsal over (the May 11, Kansas) race using the FOX program and my bosses were texting me when we got done, ‘What did you think?’. I said, ‘I’ve got one problem.

“We only get to do this five weeks.’ I had a lot of fun and it’s going to be here and gone in a snap of a finger. I am all about doing 600 miles.”

Perhaps more impressive than Ross Chastain driving from last to first to win the Coca-Cola 600 was the work his team had to put in just get the race-winning car prepared on Sunday.

Chastain crashed due to a tire failure in practice, forcing the Trackhouse Racing Team to scramble as they prepared the backup car. The car was meant to be a backup for next weekend’s race at Nashville and many changed needed to be and overnight. Crew chief Phil Surgen admitted to only sleeping for about “two-and-a-half hours” before the marathon race on Sunday. 

Chastain himself stayed with the team until around 10pm on Saturday when Trackhouse competition director Tony Lunders was “literally pushing me out, saying, ‘go home, go to sleep, I need you to be ready tomorrow night.'”

While Chastain finally went home to rest, the team remained, burning the midnight oil as they prepared the car that would ultimately win NASCAR’s longest race. But before they could even get to work on that. nearly 90 minutes were spent on the primary car before they realized they weren’t going to be able to fix it.

“As we start pulling parts off, it just became more evident that there was a section of the rear frame that was bent probably beyond repair,” explained Surgen [Chastain’s crew chief]. “Then at that moment it became a necessity to go to a backup car.

“Unfortunately, that was probably an hour or an hour and a half after we got to the garage and had already started working on repairing the primary car. Although it took a long time to identify, by the time we got all the parts and the car disassembled to the point where we could fully see all the damage, it was evident we needed to go back to the car.”

People dropped everything to come and help

Surgen also explained how it was a total team effort in the end as around 30 people came in to help after taking the backup car back to the race shop.

“We had obviously all the road crew that was at the track was there. We had engine support from ECR. We had shop guys that were at concerts and ball games and everything that just dropped what they were doing, came to the shop,” revealed Surgen.

“Like I said, probably 30 people there at 8:30pm (Saturday) night. As the night wore on and different stages of the process kind of evolved, we sent some of those guys home, and the last of us, there were probably eight or ten of us that left at 2:30am last night. The first guys got back there at 5:30am.”

What needed to be done

But what actually needed to be done in order to get the backup car race-ready? Surgen said they began with a “fully assembled car” but it had no engine in it. There were countless other changes needed to get it ready for 600 miles at Charlotte when it was only meant for a 400-mile race at Nashville.

“When we got there, there was certainly a ton of work to do. We put a good bit of interior in it. We changed the transaxle. We had to use the engine from the primary car that was at the racetrack. Then there’s the wrap, final set on suspension, final set on the body, and then final scale and such, all those last-minute adjustments. Number of hours, it’s hard to say. Like I mentioned earlier to the gentleman over there, we had 30 people working there for a while, and into the night that dwindled down to maybe ten. You know, it was a ton of man hours in the last 36 hours that went into the car we had today.

Team owner Justin Marks was stunned by the effort by both driver and team as they celebrated their first win of the 2025 season.

“This weekend I think was a master class in never giving up and grinding,” said Marks. “It wasn’t just the #1 Team that built that car last night. It was people from all corners of the organization that said, I’ll drop what I’m doing and drive to the shop and help, because we’ve all been working so hard the last month, month and a half to sort of turn this team around

“I stood in front of everybody at this organization the first day that I took ownership of it back at the end of 2021, and I said, you know, We have everything that we need to be successful here. We just have to work together. We have to believe in each other, and we have to fundamentally believe that we can do it, that we can go win big races and contend for championships. If we support each other and go the extra mile and do whatever it takes, then we can get there.

“I think this weekend was a beautiful expression of that, and I am so — I don’t want to sound romantic, but I am just so unbelievably proud of everybody because what they did this weekend was very, very, very difficult. It was truly a team win. Putting a race car together — building a race car last night, bringing it to the racetrack, starting last, making good changes, good pit stops, good strategy, and just putting it on the shoulders of our amazing race car driver, Ross Chastain, to punch it into victory lane. It’s incredible.”

Trackhouse Racing and JR Motorsports announced today that Quaker State will sponsor the No. 9 JRM Chevrolet driven by Daniel Suárez in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on June 14 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course in Mexico City.

The event marks the series’ return to Mexico and a homecoming for Suárez, a native of Monterrey, Mexico.

”Having the opportunity to compete in the Xfinity Series race makes the weekend in Mexico City even better,” said Suárez, the only Mexican driver to win NASCAR Cup Series races (Sonoma, 2022 and Atlanta, 2024).

“I’ve been very impressed with how fast JR Motorsports has been this season, and I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the Quaker State Chevrolet in a few weeks. Being born and raised in Mexico is incredibly special to me. I have dreamed about racing in my home country every day since I left Mexico to chase my NASCAR dream in 2011. I appreciate everyone at Quaker State and JR Motorsports coming on board to make this a reality.”

The NASCAR Xfinity Series competed on the road course from 2005 – 2008. Suárez, the 2016 NASCAR Xfinity Series Champion, will compete in the NASCAR Cup Series event the following day in the No. 99 Telcel-Infinitum Chevrolet for Trackhouse Racing.

Suárez will make his first Xfinity Series start of the 2025 NASCAR season at Mexico City. His most recent start in the series came in 2024 at the Chicago Street Race. Suárez won three races on the way to claiming the Xfinity Series title in 2016, including a dominating performance in the season finale at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway, where he won the pole, led the most laps, and won the race.

“I think everyone is going to be amazed by the reception in Mexico,” said Suárez. “We want to make this weekend permanent on the NASCAR calendar for many years.”

The historic Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez road course is 2.42 miles long and boasts 15 turns at an elevation of 7,342 feet. Built in 1959 and remodeled in 2015, it honors Mexican racing brothers Ricardo Rodríguez and Pedro Rodríguez and has hosted eight Formula 1 races.

“The historic arrival of the NASCAR Cup Series in Mexico is a milestone for motorsports. At Quaker State, we understand that on-track performance reflects a commitment to technology, cutting-edge technology, and engine protection. Our lubricants are formulated to protect vehicle engines, even in extreme conditions,” said Ricardo Ibarra, CEO of CS Shell & Quaker State.

Suárez joins an impressive roster of JR Motorsports drivers competing in Mexico City, including Trackhouse Racing development driver Connor Zilisch, 2024 Xfinity Series Champion Justin Allgaier, Sammy Smith, and Carson Kvapil.

Suárez said he has observed that Mexican race fans are growing more interested in NASCAR.

“Mexico has been loving motorsports for a very long time, and I feel like, slowly, that has also changed into NASCAR,” said Suárez. “NASCAR is a very important sport for Mexico, and it continues to grow with the NASCAR Mexico Series and now the Cup and Xfinity Series going there. It’s going to be a big deal. There are a lot of super excited people.”

The CW Network will televise the Mexico City Xfinity race at 4:30 p.m. ET on June 14.
