Skier and Hunkpapa Lakota Connor Ryan was born and raised on the homelands of the Arapaho, Cheyenne and Ute at the base of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. Ryan will be speaking about his perspective on skiing, Indigenous culture and environmental stewardship Jan. 3 at Snow Mountain Ranch.

The event is free and offers a opportunity to watch the ski film “Spirit of the Peaks” and ski alongside Ryan. The event kicks off with the film screening at 1 p.m. at the Schlessman Family Camper Hub followed by cross-country skiing. The keynote address is scheduled from 3-4 p.m. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Ryan said the traditional ecological knowledge that comes from Lakota culture helps him to understand the value of the land and the snow people ski on, which he shares through adventure and activism.

Anyone planning to ski should bring their own equipment. Rentals will be available at the Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic center.

Connor Ryan is Hunkpapa Lakota and stars in “Spirit of the Peaks,” which is a film about the struggles of identity that come with being from two worlds. The film calls on anyone who spends time in the mountains to feel a deeper connection to the land and embrace traditional Indigenous ethics when it comes to preservation of sacred places.
