Local organization, bar partner to distribute winter gear to the homeless community

Thanks to an anonymous donation, members of the homeless community in Norman, Moore and Oklahoma City were supplied with warm clothes, sleeping bags, tents and more Saturday.Donna Hall and Steve Wilson, owners of Old Number 9 Bar, located at 4303 E. Alameda St., helped gather volunteers from the bar’s patrons to help distribute the items to the homeless communities.“ One thing that will really surprise you when you get into doing something like this for the communities… You think that you have a set situation or a preconceived notion of how things are with those people that are homeless,” Wilson said. “And it’s not really the case. They’re really, really appreciative and thankful and kind and courteous.”
“Right before Christmas, a couple donated over ,500 worth of tents, sleeping bags, heaters, jackets, socks, gloves… Pretty much everything to keep someone with nothing warm,” Hall said.When the items were donated, the couple did not tell Hall their names. While he wanted to “give them a little plaque and everything,” all the couple would allow was a simple thank you, according to Hall.
Homeless Military Veterans, a nonprofit, partnered with Old Number 9 Bar for the distribution. Kelly Hall, president of Homeless Military Veterans, said these efforts were possible because of an anonymous donation.According to Wilson, Old Number 9 Bar, both the owners and its patrons, like to give back to the community. Last month, the bar crowd held a toy drive and donated the items to Toys for Tots. It has worked on other fundraisers with Homeless Military Vets and is in the process of planning future fundraising events.“ That’s really the way we want our bar to be is more community-based,” Wilson said. “We get all types (of patrons) in there and we try to get back. That’s our main goal, is just giving back. It’s the whole key to the success of the community.”According to Kelly Hall, items were given to around 64 people at the three locations and the organization passed out items at the Salvation Army location in Norman. He said everyone was “extremely grateful,” adding that one woman told them she had not had a coat in around three months. Steve Wilson said everyone was “very appreciative.”“ Truthfully, the doors wouldn’t be open on the bar if it wasn’t for the community,” Kelly Hall said. “It’s like that for all the businesses. If you’re not giving back to the community, then you’re just taking from it. So our main goal is to give back to the community that’s provided for us.”

How did we get here?
Colorado had their backs to the wall and responded with a 7-4 win in Game 6. Six players scored, but it was Valeri Nichushkin who led all with two scores.
Dallas couldn’t close it out when it mattered, and enter Game 7 with an 8-9 all-time record in Game 7 matchups. Though, their most recent Game 7 occurrence was last season in the first round, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights.
Colorado on the other hand is 6-10 all-time in Game 7, having lost the last six Game 7 contests.
Whoever wins will play the winner of the Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues series in the next round.
