Wildcats hoops making way in SWAC
B-CU’S baseball team is hosting Stony Brook at Jackie Robinson Ballpark this week.The Bethune-Cookman University softball team is back in action. They played their first home game on Feb. 12. The Wildcats were picked to finish second in the conference preseason polls.The Daytona State College men’s basketball team is ranked #25 in the nation.B-CU has an 11-13 overall record. They are 8-3 in the SWAC which ties them for second place with Jackson State behind Southern (10-1).B-CU picked to finish second in the SWAC preseason polls.
Bethune-Cookman softball in season
The Atlantic Sharks (20-7) also won the 4A-8 district championship. Atlantic hosted Tavares (14-10). MaxPreps.com ranks the Sharks #13 in Class 4A.The Wildcats played their home opener in a double header with North Florida on Wednesday at Sunnyland Park which was after deadline.Bethune-Cookman’s softball team opened the season going 1-4 in NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater from Feb. 7 through Feb. 9.Four Wildcats received All-SWAC Preseason honors in Gonzalez (1st Team), Ueyma (2nd Team), Allen (2nd Team) and Velazquez (2nd Team). B-CU plays in the Hatter Classic at Stetson University from Feb. 14 to Feb. 16 and in the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City, California from Feb. 20 through Feb. 22.In two games she had 26 points, 25 rebounds, three steals and two assists.The Wildcats return home to face Alcorn State on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. and Jackson State on Monday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. Daytona State is 22-2 overall and 10- 0 in the Mid-Florida Conference.
B-CU Baseball season opener this week
The New Smyrna Beach Barracudas (22-5) girls are the 5A-7 district champions. The Barracudas are the top seed in Region 5A-2. They hosted Orlando Jones (18-15). MaxPreps ranks NSB tops #1 Class 5A and #16 in Florida.On the boys side, New Smyrna (20- 7) also won the 5A-7 district championship. They are the seventh seed in Region 5A-2 and traveled to seconded seeded Lecanto (24-3).The Wildcats were picked to finish third in the SWAC preseason polls.Nicholson recorded her 14th and 15th double-doubles of the season at Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M, respectively.The ‘Cats have Trey Thomas (15.6ppg), Daniel Rouzan (11.7ppg, 5rpg), Jesus Carrarelo-Martin (5.8ppg, 4.7rpg, 1.9apg, 1.2spg, 1.6bpg) amongst others.
The Falcons have Isaiah Dorceus (15ppg), Dylan Diaz (11.2ppg), Jaylin Payne (10.1), Eddie Placer (10.8ppg), Tyrese Lacey (9.9ppg), Huascar Cuevas (8.9ppg) and company.
B-CU’s Nicholson SWAC Newcomer of the Week
Three local high school basketball teams made it to the FHSAA State Playoffs.The Wildcats have won four games in a row including an 80-77 win over Texas Southern on Monday and an 85- 82 win over Prairie View just two days earlier.B-CU returns senior pitcher Halyne Gonzales, sophomore second baseman Jessica Allen; redshirt senior outfielder Joslyn Davis; senior outfielder Joyce Bloom; redshirt senior shortstop Brianna Velazquez, graduate catcher Thais Uyema and sophomore outfielder Brooklyn Scott amongst others.Head Coach Laura Watten is five wins away from 800 career wins.DSC has upcoming home games with Eastern Florida State College on Feb. 19 and Polk State College on Feb. 22.The Falcons have won 18-straigth games and recently picked up wins over Indian River College 112-77 and Santa Fe College 85-75.
New Smyrna girls and boys and Atlantic boys make playoffs
Their lone win came over Morgan State 4-3. Boccabello and Torres receive All-SWAC Preseason First Team honors while Souffrain and Riveira was named to the Second Team.Against TSU, Nicholson recorded 10 points with 10 rebounds. She had 16 points and 15 rebounds against Prairie View A&M.The Wildcats baseball team is back on the diamond as they host a three-game series with Stony Brook at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in downtown Daytona Beach from Feb. 14 to Feb. 16.Things tipped off in the Regional Quarter Finals on Wednesday, Feb. 12 which was after deadline. The winners advance to the Regional Semi-Finals on Feb. 17.First pitch is 7 p.m. on Feb. 14; 6 p.m. on Feb. 15 and 1 p.m. on Feb. 16.
