The victim was in the area when he was approached by a suspect in a vehicle, the spokesman said. There was a verbal argument and the suspect fired several shots at the victim before fleeing.
Los Angeles Police Department officers from the Newton Division responded to the 5700 block of South Fortuna Street, between East 57th Street and Slauson Avenue, at 6:35 p.m. Monday regarding a shots fired call.
The victim was taken by ambulance to a hospital in unknown condition, he said. The shooting was believed to be gang-related.
