Retzlaff, who goes by the nickname “BYJew,” is among just three Jewish students attending the university affiliated with the Latter-day Saints.
The junior, appointed as the starting quarterback prior to the season, has steered the Cougars to a 10-2 record and achieved a No. 18 ranking nationwide. He has passed for 2,796 yards, earned 20 touchdowns, and recorded 10 interceptions.
Established in 1888, Manischewitz produces kosher items such as matzo, macaroons, and wine.

Retzlaff expressed that the cherished Jewish brand “has always been a part of my life.”
“Matzo with peanut butter has been my favorite snack since I was a child, and every Passover, my family and I would create matzo pizza together,” he shared in a press release. “During Chanukah, we had the tradition of making potato latkes. Now, at BYU, I can share these traditions with my teammates. This partnership signifies more than just football — it’s about fostering connections and honoring Jewish pride in ways I never anticipated.”
In a popular video announcing the collaboration, Retzlaff performs football drills while holding a box of matzo.
Manischewitz will produce special limited-edition Jake Retzlaff Matzo Boxes to “commemorate the blend of athletic success and cultural legacy.” Retzlaff will also share his narrative and bond with Manischewitz through video content across social media platforms.
“We are incredibly proud to officially welcome Jake to the Manischewitz family this holiday season,” stated Shani Seidman, chief marketing officer of Kayco, the parent company of Manischewitz. “His story is truly inspirational, and we are privileged to support his thrilling football journey and aspirations. This collaboration embodies everything the brand aims to be—celebrating our history and enhancing awareness of Jewish food and excellence.”
