The letter of the day is “S,” the number of the day is 100, and the themes from Wednesday’s slate were inside-the-park home runs and no-hitters.

An absolutely packed slate featured more than 250 games in Eastern Mass. and we wrote up more than 110 of them, so find all the highlights, stats, and streaks in our sport-specific roundups: Scoreboard | Baseball | Softball | Boys’ lacrosse | Girls’ lacrosse | Boys’ volleyball | Girls’ tennis | Boys’ tennis

1. Milestones and moments

We declared the number of the day was 100, but we have to start with a 400, as in Whittier boys’ lacrosse senior Conor Walsh, who netted his 400th career point by posting three goals and four assists in a 13-11 win over Triton.

Now on to the 100s. Let’s begin with Seekonk sophomore Evelyn Crane, who netted her 100th career goal in a 20-8 win over Somerset Berkley. See what we meant about the letter ‘S’?

But we’re not done. Sandwich senior Cole Rodgers scored twice, including his 200th varsity goal, in a 13-5 loss to Norwell. Southeastern’s Rebecca Hornung recorded her 100th career strikeout by sitting down 14 batters in a 12-6 win over Blue Hills. Weymouth’s Jill Ondrick also recorded her 100th strikeout, but hers was of the season (43 innings), as she fanned 15 Framingham batters.

Franklin senior Sarah Boozang recorded her 100th hit against Milford.

Before we go on to the walk-off winners, there were a couple of significant results Wednesday that need mentioning. Latin Academy handed English High baseball a 4-3 defeat, marking English’s first Boston City League loss since 2022.

The top-ranked St. John’s (Shrewsbury) baseball team fell, 4-3, to a Catholic Memorial team that improved to 3-7 behind big offensive showings from Liam McKinney and Carson McCarthy.

Over at St. John Paul II, Logan Our (3 innings, 6 strikeouts) and Colin Buckley (2 innings, 3 Ks) combined for a five-inning no-hitter in a 19-0 demolition of Sturgis West.

2. Walk-off wins

It wasn’t a big day for sudden victories, but there were a few worth noting: Caine Allen hit into the walk-off error that scored Preston George and gave Whitman-Hanson a 4-3 victory over Silver Lake, Isabella Briones singled home Macy Ingraham from second in the eighth inning during a 2-1 Millis victory over Dedham, and Logan Shannon netted the overtime winner for Norton boys’ lacrosse in a 10-9 win over Dedham.

3. Five stars

There were too many impressive performances to limit our star count to three, so we’re expanding.

Tessa Francis, Marblehead — Her second no-hitter of the season featured a whopping 19 strikeouts among the 23 batters she faced during a 4-0 win over Salem.

Jackie Giordano, Brooks — The senior from Andover was an error away from a perfect game, striking out 16 while allowing no hits or walks to beat Lawrence Academy, 1-0.

Cate Larson, Taunton — Stepping up as the top-ranked Tigers’ ace this season, Larson fired her first no-hitter to silence No. 2 King Philip, 4-0. Larson struck out 13 in a rematch of last year’s Division 1 title game.

Jordan O’Malley, Salem — The 6-foot-3-inch senior righthander tossed six one-hit innings, striking out six, and added three hits and three RBIs in a 14-0 win over Marblehead.

Luke Rogan, Mansfield — The Nichols-bound senior could have been listed under the walk-offs, as he single in the bottom of the seventh finished a 4-3 Hockomock win over Foxborough. But Rogan did so much more, allowing just one earned run in six innings with seven strikeouts and collecting two hits, including a double.

Speaking of Mansfield, one of the most impressive web gems of the season came from Hornets second baseman Brendan Vokey, who dove to his right to knock down a sharply hit ball, then flipped it to second for the force out.

4. Going, going, gone

Did we mention the inside-the-park home run theme? It starts with Dennis-Yarmouth sophomore Brooke Chicoine, who laced a pair of four-baggers that didn’t leave the park, accounting for eight RBIs in a 26-19 loss to Falmouth. Braintree’s Kate Fosco and Medway’s Katie Anderson also skedaddled around the bases for inside-the-parkers.

Olivia Guarino put on her own power display, blasting a pair of home runs in Peabody’s 14-run fourth inning during a 23-4 destruction of Winthrop. Lizzy Bettencourt and MacKenzie Landry both homered for the Tanners.

Hopkinton’s Caroline Ozmun launched a pair of blasts, including a grand slam, in a 12-0 win over Medfield, and teammate Holly Paharik added a shot of her own. Swampscott’s Caden Ross also delivered a grand slam, and King Philip’s Aniyah Bailey christened Taunton’s updated Jack Tripp park with a first-inning three-run homer to beat the Tigers in a battle of the top two teams in the state.

The rest of the day’s longballs belonged to Bishop Feehan’s Olivia Abren, Apponequet’s Brianna Fontes, St. John’s Prep’s Will Shaheen, Braintree’s Lexi Donahue, Wilmington’s Eva LaClair, Holliston’s Ben Maiorano, Beverly’s Elsa Reulet, Lynnfield’s Angelina O’Hara and Morgan Hubbard, and Brooks’s Shayne King.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.

Quinn Rooney powers Benet baseball 5

Kaneland High School is the site of Saturday’s 3A regional final. Yet the visiting Benet Academy baseball is the number two seed and bats second as they try to eliminate the Kaneland Knights from the regional for a second straight year. Gino Zagorac is on the mound for the Redwings, facing Hayden Foster on the side of Kaneland. The winner faces Burlington Central, who knocked out Benet last season. This highlight is sponsored by BMO.

Both pitchers go to work in the opening frames

Gino Zagorac gets to work quick, two outs and two runners on, he strikes out the shortstop Thomas Thill in just three pitches to end the inning.

Both pitchers were sharp in the first, here is Hayden Foster striking out Josh Gugora with a runner on second.

In the top of the second, a ball gets past Dom Tomala, and Austin Preuss makes a run to third. The tag by Merrick Sullivan is not in time, and Kaneland has a runner on third with one out.

The Knights get on the board first.

Villanueva is the next batter, and he can’t beat the throw to first, but the damage is done as Preuss scoots across home. Kaneland leads 1-0 after the top of the second.

In the bottom of the second Tomala bunts, Foster’s throw to first is too high and the bases are loaded with no outs and Jonny Rossi up next.

With all the pressure behind him, Foster gets Rossi swinging for out number one.

Here is a 2-2 pitch, and Foster gets Glimco out on the foul tip. Two outs, no damage.

Foster pitches the 1-2, and Nate Cerocke grounds into a forceout at second base. Despite three men on and no outs, Benet still trails 1-0.

In the top of the third, Zagorac has two runners on already and hits the DH Ian Whildin with a pitch to load the bases.

The passed ball woes continue for Benet, this one gets away and Preston Popovich scores for Kaneland. Knights lead 2-0 after the top of the third.

On to the bottom of the fourth, with one out and Mendez on second, Rossi takes a hack. Kanon Baxley scoops it up, steps on second and beats Rossi to first with his throw. The big double play gets the Knights into the fifth still in control.

Benet breaks through in the fifth inning

In the bottom of the fifth, after a Cerocke lead off single, Sullivan hits one off the glove of Foster and it sneaks through the infield to get runners on first and second with one out.

After a walk juices the bags, Gugora hits a ground ball towards third and Popovich’s throw turns into an error. Cerocke scores and Sullivan comes around as well to tie the game at two.

On the next at-bat, Quinn Rooney steps up and delivers a deep fly ball. The right fielder loses it in the sky, but it doesn’t matter as it’s about 30 feet over his head and the fence. Rooney’s 3 run shot blows the doors open for Benet. They take a 5-2 lead into the sixth inning. Big time celebrations for the Redwings.

Luke Kohlmeyer takes over for Zagorac in the 6th, and he strikes out his first batter of the day.

Yet he doesn’t escape the jam too easily, as Villanueva’s hit trickles down in the infield, allowing him to beat the throw to first. Bases loaded with two outs.

The wild pitch woes continue for Benet, as this one gets away and allows Brady Alstott to score. 5-3 Redwings.

Kohlmeyer looks to avoid any more damage, and this pitch is right on the bottom of the umpire’s zone and punches out the Kaneland hitter without even a swing.

The Redwings hang on to win the regional championship

Onto the top of the seventh, still 5-3, Baxley lines one hard towards the first basemen, and Rooney dives for an athletic play. The first out of the inning is secured and the sophomore makes another massive play for Benet, just two outs away from a regional title.

After a Popovich groundout, the DH Whildin refuses to go down quietly. His double skips off the wall and gives Kaneland some hope with the tying run coming to the plate.

Alstott sees a 1-2 and makes contact, the ball gets past Cerocke and into the outfield. Wildin comes around home, and Kaneland stays alive with 2 outs on the board. Benet leads 5-4.

A 2-1 pitch to Thill, who pops it up into right. One catch stands in the way of a regional title and Luke Wildes calmly makes the play. Benet baseball wins the regional 5-4 over Kaneland in a hard-fought battle, scoring all their runs in the 5th. The win goes to Zagorac and his six strikeouts, with Kohlmeyer nabbing the save. Benet will face Burlington Central on Wednesday in the sectional semifinals.
