Inaugural England Athletics Masters training day in Shrewsbury

Sunday saw Shrewsbury play host to the inaugural England Athletics Masters Training Day. The sold out event was the first in a series of three to take place over the winter months. The day was built around the theme of planning and adjusting training to meet the needs of the Masters runner.  Attendees came from as far afield as Cornwall, Yorkshire and Essex and were treated to a mixture of classroom-based theory, a practical session on the track plus a strength and conditioning workshop, and a session exploring the impact of the aging body on training.

The day started with an overview of the Masters programme, followed by a hot off the press announcement that the 5k race in 2025 will be held in Shrewsbury on 17 May and will include a race for development athletes too!

Programme lead, Chris Hollinshead, and team coach, Matt Long, presented a session on specificity of training for 5k and 10k running. The highly experienced coach Ruddy Farquharson delivered a practical on conditioning the body at home, which included with a range of useful exercises which athletes can undertake at home with minimal equipment.

Attendees then took to the track to undertake two separate sessions before returning to the classroom for the final session of the day, where Ruddy covered the topic of the aging body, with considerations for training.

The event was thoroughly enjoyed by those in attendance – with Western Tempo’s Tim Taylor commenting:

“An excellent day- informative and well presented. A timely reminder that we as masters athletes are no longer invincible, hence the importance of injury prevention.”
