Desert Sun top Spring Athlete, Rancho Mirage High School softball pitcher Anelisa Garcia in Rancho Mirage, Calif., on June 17, 2025.
Before we fully turn our attention to the 2025-26 high school sports season, let’s take another look back at the season that was.
We’ve talked about the great individual performances from the past school year, but what about the biggest team accomplishments?
It’s time once again for you to vote. Here are some of the best teams from the 2024-25 school year. We’ve got CIF-SS champions, history-makers and all-around dominating performances.
Read the accomplishments of these teams and then vote for your favorite. Whichever team has the most votes at noon on Saturday will be your champion of champions.
Last week’s results: Our series of summer sports polls asked the question last week: Who will be the top defensive player on the football field next year in the desert? You voted and you chose Koa Rapolla of Palm Springs. Rapolla, back to being healthy, is a havoc-creator for the Indians on the defensive side of the ball. We’ll see if he proves you right this fall.
But this week, we’re focusing on teams. Here are five top desert teams from the 2024-25 season in chronological order of achievement. Happy voting!
Palm Desert boys’ water polo
What they did: The Aztecs rode a smothering defense to a CIF-SS Division 5 title, including a 10-4 romp in the title game in which they held Warren scoreless in the second half. With the win, the DEL champion Aztecs became the only school in the desert with two boys’ water polo titles, having also won one in 2013.
Shadow Hills girls’ wrestling
What they did: For the second straight year, the Knights took home a CIF-SS championship, winning the Northern Division title. In all, it was a stellar year for the hard-working group, racking up the DEL team title, having seven DEL individual champions, two CIF-SS individual champions, eight Masters qualifiers and three State qualifiers.
Desert Mirage boys’ soccer
What they did: The Rams got hot at the right time and steamrolled to the CIF-SS Division 5 championship game. Some unfortunate luck may have cost them a title. The Rams won four straight playoff games by a combined score of 11-2 to set up a home title match against Dominguez. But heavy winds whipping dust around forced that game to be postponed. The make-up game was played at a neutral site instead and Dominguez won 2-0. Had it been in Thermal would the outcome have been different? Hard to tell, but it was a great run by the Rams either way.
Rancho Mirage softball
What they did: The Rattlers made history, there’s no other way to say it. Rancho Mirage rolled to the Division 7 CIF-SS softball title with a 7-3 win over Culver City in the championship game to become the first desert softball team to ever win a CIF-SS title. They even won twice more in the state regional before losing in the final after an impressive seven consecutive playoff wins.
Cathedral City softball
What they did: The Lions created a bit of history of their own by making the CIF-SS Division 8 championship game. No desert softball team had ever made a CIF-SS championship game before this year, when the Lions and Rancho Mirage both did it. The Lions roared into the final, having won their four playoff games by a combined score of 51-8, but lost a heartbreaker 1-0 to Hueneme in the championship game in Irvine. It was still a historic run for the Lions, putting their school firmly on the softball map.

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — A Burnsville boys volleyball coach is charged with criminal sexual conduct after she allegedly had a relationship with a teenage player, according to prosecutors.
Brooke Emily Reinhardt, a 24-year-old coach at Burnsville High School, is charged with three counts of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree. According to the complaint, a witness told police that Reinhardt was looking after his home in Burnsville while he was out of the state for a week in June 2025.
The witness found a 17-year-old boy’s wallet in his home upon returning, though the boy had never been in his home. When the victim was interviewed, prosecutors say he let officers look at his phone and they found texts from Reinhardt about condoms.
The teen told officers that the two began dating a few months earlier. He said they had sex and Reinhardt had sent naked pictures of herself, according to the criminal complaint.
After Reinhardt was arrested, prosecutors say she told police she had sex with the victim and had sent naked pictures of herself.
Reinhardt will appear in court on Aug. 6 for an omnibus hearing.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington man is facing a felony charge after allegedly leaving the scene of a deadly crash on Market Street early Friday morning.
According to the arrest warrant, Jeffrey Yasalonis is charged in the death of Melanie Lynn Degrazio.
The crash happened shortly before 12:30 a.m. on July 4th in the 4100 block of Market Street. When Wilmington Police officers arrived, they found Degrazio, 43, dead at the scene.
At the time of the initial news release on Friday, police said the driver involved was identified and they were still investigating.
An article on the UNCW Athletics website said Yasalonis was hired in 2023 as assistant coach for the UNCW women’s volleyball team. He also served as interim head coach in the fall of 2024, but he is no longer listed as a current member of the coaching staff.
According to online records, Yasalonis was arrested Sunday afternoon at 679 Wagoner Drive, which is the address for Trask Coliseum. He is out of jail on a $35,000 bond. He is scheduled for his first court appearance on Monday afternoon.
In a statement, UNCW said Yasalonis was not an employee at the time of the incident.
“His employment with the university concluded on 12/17/2024. As this is an active legal matter, we will not comment further in accordance with our policies and respect for the privacy of those involved,” the statement continued.

A Twin Cities high school boys volleyball coach faces criminal sexual conduct charges.
Prosecutors allege Brooke Reinhardt, 24, sexually assaulted a 17-year-old player.
Her alleged conduct was discovered after the victim’s wallet was found at the home of a friend for whom Reinhardt was housesitting, a criminal complaint states. The friend said the victim “had never been in [his] residence and had no reason to be.”
When police interviewed the victim, he initially said he “had not spent any time with just [Reinhardt] aside from their sport.” After police found texts on his phone from Reinhardt saying “he had a lot of things to delete,” as well as “texts about condoms,” he admitted to the criminal sexual conduct, the complaint states.
Reinhardt also denied the conduct initially, but later admitted it, according to the complaint. She faces three felony counts of criminal sexual conduct.
Reinhardt was hired by the district in September 2023 and was listed on the Burnsville High School boys’ volleyball page as the sole coach.
In a letter to families, the district wrote in part, “The District is limited by state law on the information we can release regarding personnel, but please know that we have and will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement regarding this matter, and will take appropriate actions as dictated by district policies and state law. Following these upsetting allegations, the school and district’s immediate and primary concern is for the well-being of our students.”
In regard to Reinhardt’s status with the school, the district said she “is a coach only and doesn’t hold any other position.”
The school district encouraged family members or students who have concerns, questions or information to contact the school directly or Assistant Superintendent Dr. Chris Bellmont at cbellmont@isd191.org.
