Box Score COLUMBUS, OHIO — Rutgers fell to Ohio State at the Schottenstein Center, losing by a score of 80-66 on Saturday afternoon.
The Scarlet Knights began the game on a high note, connecting on four of their first five shots and four of their opening six three-pointers, while the Buckeyes hit 12 of their first 17 attempts, leading at halftime with a score of 39-31. Ohio State scored 20 points in the paint and capitalized on six turnovers from Rutgers to earn 11 points.
Sophomore Jordan Derkack and freshman Lathan Sommerville left the first half as Rutgers’ top scorers, each netting six points. Five-star freshmen Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper experienced a sluggish start, combining for just 2-for-10 shooting in the opening 20 minutes. Rutgers collectively shot 37 percent, while Ohio State shot 57 percent.
The two freshmen found their rhythm early in the second half, making the first six baskets for RU and contributing 18 points together. Bailey ended the game with 12 points and seven rebounds, while Harper tallied 18 points and four assists.
Junior Emmanuel Ogbole and Sommerville added 10 and eight points, with both grabbing five rebounds.
For the Buckeyes, Devin Royal and Bruce Thornton were exceptional, each scoring 22 points on a combined 17-for-25 shooting performance (68 percent).
Rutgers (5-4) aims to end its three-game losing streak on Tuesday, Dec. 10, when it faces Penn State during its Big Ten home opener at 7 p.m. This will mark the team’s first home game since facing Merrimack on Nov. 20, which was three weeks ago.
