Duluth, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men’s basketball team pulled out their fourth victory of the season this evening, defeating the Cougars from Minnesota-Morris. The Saints led by 12 at the halftime break, and continued their execution in the second half, taking tonight’s contest by a score of 87-70.
How it Happened
First Half
The Saints jumped out to a quick 7-0 run, as Tanner Thomson (Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater HS) nailed a pair of field goals, while Koy Nelson (Port Wing, Wis./South Shore HS) got a three-pointer to fall to build an early lead.
Nelson and Aaron Keykal (Princeton, Minn./Princeton HS) would score next for CSS, with Nelson scoring on a layup and Keykal finishing a fast break with a slam dunk.
Jacquez Overstreet (Appleton, Wis./Oshkosh West (Marian University)) got his night started with a three-pointer for CSS’ next field goal, expanding the lead to 14-6.
Midway through the half, Drelyn Jones (Leyden, Il./Leyden Highschool) and Thomson both converted layups to bring the score to 22-10.
In the closing stages of the half, Keykal scored on a pair of jumpers, followed by a jumper by Kai Penney (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo Highschool) to expand the Saints’ lead to 34-15.
Overstreet would score the final field goal for CSS in the first half, taking a 39-27 lead into the halftime break.
Second Half
Nelson and Penney kicked off the second half for the Saints second half, with Nelson hitting a three-pointer and Penney knocking down a jumper.
Keykal and Thomson would continue their hot streaks with jumpers moments later, expanding the lead to 48-38.
Moe Washington (Silver Spring, Md./Hibbing Community College) scored his first basket of the game with a three-pointer at the 14:42 mark in the half, bringing the Saints lead to 53-42.
Overstreet scored the next five points for CSS, as the senior nailed a three-pointer and converted a jumper a few possessions later.
Jumpers from Washington and Kobe Karels (Cambridge, Minn./Isanti (Aurora University)) would make the score 62-44 as the game approached the back half of the second half.
Following jumpers from Nelson and Washington, Penney scored his seventh points of the game on a reverse layup to push the Saints’ lead to 69-46.
Nelson and Overstreet would each make another three-pointer, followed by a layup from Thomson to push the CSS lead to 81-58.
The Cougars would score late baskets to cut down their deficit, but the Saints came away with a commanding 87-70 victory in tonight’s contest.

The Saints (4-6, 1-2 MIAC) will be back in action on Monday, December 30, where they will take part in the Radisson Holiday Classic in River Falls, Wisconsin. The Saints will take on UW-River Falls. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
