Last Time Out ~ USAG Collegiate Championships: March 28 & 29 in Annapolis
Under the bright lights of the 2025 USAG Collegiate National Championship, the Navy gymnastics team shined with a season-best performance on its way to the team title. Locked in from its first rotation on the parallel bars, the Mids hit 24-of-24 routines as every gymnast, who raised their hand for action on Friday scored 12.75 or more points on every routine and added nine stick bonuses on their way to a 320.70-point showing, 5.65 points ahead of runner-up Army.

The final leaderboard consisted of Navy in first with Army in second at 315.05 and Air Force in third with 313.05 points. William & Mary battled to the end, but missed the final medal-winning position on the podium with a fourth-place result of 310.10. Springfield and Simpson College rounded out the standings with respective scores of 308.45 and 300.80.

Individually, Isaiah Drake highlighted the team’s success as he placed top-five on four separate apparatus and won the all-around title for his first career USAG Championship gold medal. He tied for the top vault of the day before finishing fourth on the rings and fifth on both the parallel bars and high bar.

Drake led a contingent of nine different Mids that qualified for the event finals as fellow senior William Champagne and Matthew Petros joined him in multiple finals courtesy of strong efforts on the floor exercise and parallel bars for Champagne and high bar and parallel bars for Petros. Freshman Boone Washburn matched Drake for the result of the day as he turned in the top score on the high bar on Friday.

As a team, Navy scored 54.25 points on the floor exercise, 52.35 on the pommel horse, 52.05 on the rings, 55.0 on the vault, 53.4 on the parallel bars and 53.65 on the high bar. Four of those six marks are season-highs as the Mids’ previous best score on the floor was a 53.20, a 52.05 on the horse, a 51.5 on the p-bars and a 52.85 on the high bar. This was the first time all season that the team posted scores of 52.0 or better across all six disciplines.

On Saturday, the 2025 USAG Collegiate National Championship Meet concluded with the event finals at Halsey Field House. The Mids were well represented on the podium throughout the meet as 10 of the team’s 12 routines on Saturday earned medals with William Champagne and Matthew Petros leading the way with first place results.

Salina City Commissioners Monday afternoon fulfilled a previous commitment, and accepted a bid for the construction of sand volleyball courts at Jerry Ivey Park.

Previously, the Salina Parks and Recreation Master Plan made a priority of addressing tennis courts in the park system, doing so successfully through partnerships with the Salina Tennis Alliance and USD 305.

On October 25th, 2021, the City Commission authorized a limited warranty deed with reversionary and limited warranty covenants and retained easement with USD 305 regarding the conveyance of real estate of a southwest portion of Jerry Ivey Park.

At the time, Park amenities in the southwest portion of Jerry Ivey Memorial Park included:

    • 1 basketball court
    • 2 sand volleyball courts
    • 4 tennis courts

The conveyance of real estate allowed USD 305 to construct 8 new tennis courts at the park.

The school district constructed 8 total courts, with 4 of the courts dedicated for school use and 4 for public use. Additionally, the basketball court was resurfaced, and new basketball goals were installed by the school district as part of the project.

The sand volleyball courts were not replaced by USD 305 due to the space requirements needed to construct the 8 tennis courts.

City of Salina staff committed to replacing the sand volleyball courts at the park to improve the playability of sand volleyball, and to better align with USA Volleyball standards for sand volleyball.

In 2024, Parks and Recreation staff worked with architect Warren Ediger to create the design and specifications for the sand volleyball courts to prepare for bidding.  Elements of the sand volleyball design include:

    • Improved sand mix from previous courts and existing court at Centennial Park.
    •  Ball Stop Fencing on the north and south ends of the courts
    • Perforated drainpipe under court leading to french drains to improve drainage of courts
    •  Larger court with more overrun outside the court lines
    • Concrete curb with padding
    • Mow strips under fence and around perimeter of courts to improve mowing maintenance.

Garibay Siteworks Co. L.L.C. submitted the accepted bid, in the amount of $89,690.00, with a 5% contingency of $4.484.50 for a total project authorization of $94,174.50.
