CALUMET, Mich. – The NMU men’s nordic ski squad kicked off the 2024/25 season in Calumet on Saturday, taking part in the Swedetown Season Opener.

“There’s plenty of snow in Calumet, but it was freezing rain, making the trails a little icy and challenging,” remarked head coach Andy Keller following the 7.5km interval start event.  “It was an enjoyable race to shake off the rust and kickstart the season.”

Mathias Haugen was the top performer for the Cats, clocking in at 18:22.8 for a fourth place finish. Following him was Adrik Kraftson, who finished fifth with a time of 18:31.4, and Luke Fricker in sixth place at 18:33.6. 

Jonathan Clarke secured ninth with a time of 18:44.4, while Hendrik Peterson finished 17th, clocking in at 19:25.5.

NMU will next hit the trails on December 12 and 14 for the Gitchi Gami Games in the Birkie trail system located in Cable, Wisconsin. The freestyle sprint will take place on Thursday, followed by the classic sprint on Saturday.
