Hong Kong missed the chance to create a thriving, world-class cricket hub when plans for a suitable playing arena at Kai Tak were abandoned, the sport’s former chief in the city has said.

Tim Cutler said he had pushed during his two years as Cricket Hong Kong chief executive for the secondary stadium at Kai Tak Sports Park (KTSP) – now known as the youth sports ground – to be configured for cricket.

Melbourne Cricket Club was among the sub-consultants employed during KTSP’s planning stage. Ultimately, however, an athletics track was installed at the 5,000-seat venue, which can also stage football and rugby.

“There are so many facilities with running tracks nearby, but Hong Kong has no world-class cricket ground to host major events,” said Cutler, who could not bring himself to visit the smaller venue when he attended March’s Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens at Kai Tak Stadium.

“All the early designs had cricket in the sports ground. It’s 150 metres [in diameter], which is exactly what you need for top-level cricket. It’s hugely frustrating.”

Now CEO of the Vanuatu Cricket Association, Cutler pointed to Rwanda’s 10,000-capacity Gahanga Cricket Stadium, which opened in 2017 and has already hosted more T20Is than any other African venue.

The Odyssey of the Mind team from the Pablo Center at the Confluence has qualified for the World Finals, and they need your help to get there.

Established in 1979, Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is a worldwide extracurricular program for grade school students. The network promotes creative problem-solving, performance abilities, improvisation, and technical understanding, among other skills.

Each year, participating teams select a problem to address, which requires the students to write and perform a brief presentation, as well as overcome a technical challenge related to the scenario.

Speaking as a multi-year OM participant two decades later, it combines the teamwork and competitive spirit of youth sports, shop class, theatre, and gamified learning. The extra curricular program embodies a challenge-based model that draws students together.

“This team of seven incredibly talented girls, grades 4-6 from area schools and homeschool programs, has spent months building, inventing, and problem-solving their way to this moment.”

on the odyssey of the mind team headed to world finals

This division two Odyssey of the Mind (OM) team — coached by Tammy Schmitz and composed of young girls from local schools and homeschools — competed in the “classics” category, according to a Pablo Center press release.

“This team of seven incredibly talented girls, grades 4–6 from area schools and homeschool programs, has spent months building, inventing, and problem-solving their way to this moment,” the release noted.

The team’s challenge involved three distinct elements: devise a performance focused on a character from classic literature, develop a gourmet meal inspired by that character, and invent a working cooking gadget. Each part of the challenge drew inspiration from Winnie the Pooh, the classic literary figure they selected.

Since their category was chosen, the group began their project in October, leading them to secure first place in division two at a regional competition in Bangor, WI. The Eau Claire team will now head to the world finals in Michigan this May.

The world finals event often sees over 25,000 students from around the world in attendance, a massive showcase of young creative talent, Schmitz said. To facilitate team attendance, OM is holding a fundraising campaign with a goal of $8,000 to cover travel costs.

“Pablo Center remains committed to providing hands-on, innovative programs like Odyssey of the Mind to empower the next generation of creative thinkers. By investing in students today, we help shape a more imaginative and inspired tomorrow,” the release shared.

Nearly 200 people gathered Friday at Crystal Sky Banquets in McCook as the Stickney Police Association marked its 100th anniversary and hosted its first dinner dance since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The event included dinner, dancing, raffles, shared memories and the swearing-in of officers for the 2024–25 term.

Stickney Mayor Jeff Walik administered the oath to President Gary Wiseman Jr., Vice President Mitch Milenkovic, Secretary Christine Kosinski, Treasurer Natasa Dzolic, Sgt.-at-Arms Chuck Budz and Trustee Leigh Drewniak. Trustee Sam Savopoulos was unable to attend.

Walik also presented a plaque to retiring Stickney Police Chief James Sassetti in recognition of his service.

Adrian Calderon, district director for U.S. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García, delivered a copy of the Congressional Record entry honoring the group’s centennial on behalf of García and the House of Representatives.

“For a century, the members of this association have been a positive presence in the community,” the entry stated. “Our community deeply values their ongoing efforts to keep us safe and supported.”

Founded in 1925, the Stickney Police Association is the oldest active organization in the village. Members include current and former police officers, auxiliary officers and elected officials who live in Stickney.

During the Great Depression, the group provided coal and food to families and loaned money to the village to pay officer salaries. It later helped form the Stickney Police Reserve.

Over the decades, the association has awarded scholarships, sponsored youth sports teams and donated to groups including the Stickney Forest View Lions Club, American Legion Post 687 and the Stickney Youth Football Association.

“The association’s motto of ‘Maintain Good Fellowship’ has never wavered and will always prevail,” Wiseman said.
