Millersville University golf coach Scott Vandegrift has been named the recipient of the 2024 Labron Harris Sr. Award.

The award, presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America in cooperation with the PGA of America, is given to the college or high school coach and Class A PGA Professional “whose support of the game through teaching, coaching, and involvement in the community has helped ensure the game of golf’s continued growth and who represents the finest qualities the game has to offer,” according to a news release. “Being selected to receive the Labron Harris Sr. Award is something that I’ve always dreamed about happening” Vandegrift said in a release from the Golf Coaches Association of America. “I was flattered that former SMU coach Barry Rodenhaver nominated me, and after researching the history of Labron Harris Sr., it meant even more to me to be considered.”

Vandegrift is only the third NCAA Division II coach to win the award, which is named in honor of the legendary Oklahoma State head coach and was first presented in 2004.

Vandegrift was hired as the men’s golf coach at Millersville in 1985 and has been the school’s women’s coach since the program’s inception in 2008.

He is a four-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year who has led the men to five PSAC titles and 17 NCAA regional berths, and the women to one PSAC championship.

Overall, he has a combined 123 wins at Millersville. Marauders golfers have earned all-conference honors 51 times during his tenure.

He coached last spring while fighting cancer for the third time.

Vandegrift has been a member of the Philadelphia PGA Section since 1981.

He has worked as a professional at several clubs, including Tanglewood Manor Golf Course in East Drumore Township and Crossgates Golf Club in Millersville.

In addition, Vandegrift has volunteered with the American Cancer Society in Lancaster, with the Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, as a resource consultant with the National Golf Foundation Teaching Staff, as an instructor for Approach Golf and as an adviser at Solanco High School.

“I hope I never get tired of working with young people, teaching them how to love the game of golf,” Vandegrift said in a release from Millersville. “I’ve been blessed to have a wonderful family and have the opportunity of promoting the game of golf as a PGA professional and collegiate golf coach. This award caps my career, and I hope I can continue to coach for many years to come.”
