In its announcement, the zoo said it will provide updates on the status of the aviary as more information becomes available.Journal Sentinel reporter Caitlin Looby contributed to this story.Over the weekend, there were reports of hundreds of dead ducks and other waterfowl found along the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago and its northern suburbs.In March 2022, the zoo closed the aviary for a few months due to an avian flu outbreak, at that time on the recommendation of the USDA state veterinarian after an outbreak of HPAI on an egg farm in Jefferson County.

Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the die-off is being attributed to the ongoing bird flu outbreak as well as warmer weather and melting ice that has opened up new areas of water.In an announcement, the zoo said the closure “is out of an abundance of caution meant to protect our avian population from HPAI, commonly known as Avian Influenza, after recent, suspicious bird deaths on the Chicago shores of Lake Michigan.”
