Maryland cross-country and track & field head coach Andrew Valmon has received a contract extension through 2028, as announced by Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics Jim Smith.

Valmon has led the Terps’ track and field team since his appointment in 2003, with his athletes breaking 60 school records across his tenure. The 2024-2025 season was particularly prolific for Valmon and his squad, as the Terps set 15 school records and sent distance runner Rose Coats and thrower Chioma Njoku to NCAA Championship meets.

The two-time 4x400m relay Olympic gold medalist has produced three Olympic athletes across his 22 years leading Maryland, including 2024 gold medalist Thea Lafond. Lafond, a triple jumper, was the first Maryland Olympian to win gold since the turn of the century.

Valmon’s breadth of experience extends beyond College Park: he has a significant presence on the international stage. He was named the United States track and field head coach for the 2012 London Olympics and was the USATF chair for men’s track and field from 2016-24.

Locking down Valmon through 2028 will give Maryland the opportunity to build upon the momentum of the 2024-2025 season. It also sets Valmon up to be the fourth active Maryland coach to have led the school for a quarter-century. Men’s soccer head coach Sasho Cirovski (33 years) and field hockey head coach Missy Meharg (37 years) have already earned that distinction, and women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese (23 years) will hit the milestone the year before Valmon.
