Walt Disney Animation’s hit Moana 2 continues to break records in its second weekend, nearing an impressive global total of $600 million.
The sequel holds a strong position at No. 1, projecting a weekend gross between $50 million and $55 million — significantly surpassing the previous record for the post-Thanksgiving weekend. That title was previously held by another Disney film, Frozen II, which raked in $35.1 million, not accounting for inflation.
Universal’s Wicked also remains a strong contender, projected to collect another $32.7 million in its third weekend. The strong performances of both films, alongside Paramount’s Gladiator II, will contribute to a 100 percent increase in overall domestic revenue compared to the same period in 2023. Just weeks ago, there were concerns in Hollywood that total revenue for the year might not even reach $8 billion, down from $9 billion in 2023. Now, projections suggest revenue could actually be between $8.5 billion and $8.6 billion, representing a shortfall of 4 percent. (Before Thanksgiving, this gap was over 11 percent.)
Moana 2 gathered a solid $11.7 million on Friday, surpassing the entire domestic earnings of Moana ($248.7 million) within just 10 days of its release. The sequel’s domestic total reached $259.7 million by Friday, aiming to surpass $300 million by Sunday. Its worldwide earnings are anticipated to land between $590 million and $600 million by Sunday, positioning it as the fifth-largest film of the year and giving Disney three out of the top five films (Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine are the other two).
Wicked brought in $9.6 million on Friday, followed by Gladiator II with $3.6 million. The latter is projected to make $13 million over the full weekend, bringing its domestic total to $133.2 million by Sunday.
