Anders Mol & Christian Sorum from Norway along with Kristen Nuss & Taryn Kloth of the United States were the standout champions at the Beach Pro Tour’s flagship event of the year, the Doha Finals in Qatar, for their respective genders. The men’s runner-up position was claimed by the Olympic champions David Ahman & Jonatan Hellvig from Sweden, while local favorites Cherif Younousse & Ahmed Tijan, supported by FIVB Volleyball Empowerment, celebrated the bronze medal. In the women’s category, the silver medal went to USA’s Terese Cannon & Megan Kraft, and Latvia’s Tina Graudina & Anastasija Samoilova secured the bronze.
Mol & Sorum conquer the men’s gold medal contest at the 2024 Doha Finals
Mol & Sorum reclaimed their title as Beach Pro Tour champions, previously taken from them by Ahman & Hellvig. On Saturday night, the Norwegians avenged their defeat to the Swedes in the 2023 Doha Finals and triumphed in the 2024 Doha Finals to secure the championship for the second time, after winning it in 2022. Altogether, the Beachvolley Vikings have now amassed 11 golds, four silvers, and five bronzes across three seasons of the Beach Pro Tour.
The Beachvolley Vikings encountered setbacks, losing two of four matches in Pool B, including a closely contested three-set match against Ahman & Hellvig, but embarked on a stellar unbeaten playoff run, winning three matches without dropping a set to finish atop the podium. In the quarterfinals, Mol & Sorum achieved a convincing 2-0 (21-11, 21-16) victory against Paris 2024 Olympic silver medalists Nils Ehlers & Clemens Wickler from Germany. They then secured a 2-0 (21-11, 21-16) win against Cherif & Ahmed in the semifinals, culminating in a 2-0 (21-18, 22-20) win over Ahman & Hellvig in the final.
This marked Ahman & Hellvig’s first defeat of the tournament, following a five-match winning streak. As the top-ranked team in the FIVB World Ranking and defending champions of the Doha Finals, they settled for silver, marking their second Finals medal and overall 16th podium finish on the Tour. Notably, all five of their victories were achieved in tie-breaking third sets. In the semifinals, they rallied from a set down to claim a tight 2-1 (19-21, 21-19, 16-14) win over Stefan Boermans & Yorick de Groot from the Netherlands.
The Qatar Volleyball Association has received a total of CHF 502,000 in support from FIVB Volleyball Empowerment. This includes CHF 72,000 earmarked for coaching assistance for their men’s national beach volleyball teams, trained by Argentinean coach Pablo Bernardi, and another CHF 9,500 allocated for beach volleyball equipment. Qatar’s Cherif & Ahmed reached the Doha semifinals undefeated in four matches played and, after their loss to Mol & Sorum, they rebounded with a hard-fought 2-1 (18-21, 21-15, 17-15) victory over Boermans & De Groot in the bronze medal match, earning their first-ever Beach Pro Tour Finals medal and a total of seven medals on the Tour.
Ahmed makes a spike during the bronze medal match at the 2024 Doha Finals
Nuss & Kloth successfully defended their gold medal from last year at the Doha Finals, securing their title for the second consecutive time while accumulating their eighth gold and overall 12th medal on the Tour over the years. The American tandem finished the tournament with a 5-1 win-loss record, dominating both their semifinal and final match on the final day of competition. They claimed a resounding 2-0 (21-13, 21-13) victory in the semifinals over China’s Xue Chen & Xia Xinyi and a 2-0 (21-19, 21-17) win against their fellow Americans Cannon & Kraft in the gold medal showdown.
Cannon & Kraft had to accept silver, extending their podium streak to four consecutive medals on the Tour, following their Gstaad Elite16 silver, Vienna Elite16 bronze, and Rio de Janeiro Elite16 silver. To reach the Doha final, they powered through five consecutive wins, topped with a 2-0 (21-17, 21-14) sweep of their preliminary semifinal against Tina & Anastasija.
The Latvian duo secured the bronze after a 2-0 (24-22, 21-16) triumph over Xue & Xia in the third-place match. This was their ninth medal on the Beach Pro Tour and their first at a Finals event.
