The team is now the first ever HBCU to participate in the U.S. Intercollegiate Boxing Association National Tournament.“In the 20 years that they’ve been established to our knowledge, there has never been a HBCU in the tournament and there’s not many HBCU’s with a boxing club in general,” said Morehouse Boxing Club President and Founder, Jacobey Bell. 21-year-old Kaleb Hudson and 20-year-old Elijah Mclean took home national championship belts.Bell says they recently formed a 7-member competitive team. Once on the site:Hudson and Mclean are members of the Morehouse Boxing Club, a student organized group for anyone interested in the sport. Elijah McLean (17-8) beat Glenville State University’s Aaron O’Connor (9-2) to win the 168-pound Men’s Open title. Kaleb Hudson beat the University of Washington’s Evan Lee to win the 140-pound Beginner B bracket. Morehouse Chief of Police Charles Prescott stepped up to help the group fundraise and donated money out of his own pocket for lodging and travel.Bell says they’re actively fundraising to keep the momentum going, “It’s a very surreal moment and it’s a big moment for us but feel like in all honesty it’s a small moment in the scope of what we could do.”The beginner brackets were for competitors with two bouts or fewer; the open brackets were for competitors with 10 or more. “It just feels amazing to just do it with the group – we just worked so hard for this,” said Mclean.″They did the fighting, they did the training, and I was just the avenue to help get them there,” he said. We got lucky this year with the tournament being in Macon.” “It feels great, reality hit me really hard when I woke up, I still have to go class,” said Hudson. If you wish to donate to the Boxing Club, click here.
