MotoGP is in the midst of a significant transformation. With a reimagined logo, updated regulations, and a contemporary image facilitated by enhanced communication with the riders, the global motorcycle racing championship aims to broaden its appeal to an increasingly diverse audience. Carlos Ezpeleta, the leader of Dorna Sports, reveals MotoGP’s aspirations for the upcoming years.
MotoGP is gearing up for a fresh chapter with substantial developments anticipated throughout 2024. From new technical guidelines to improved safety measures and a logo revamp, the top class seeks to engage a larger audience and meet contemporary challenges.
The
MotoGP logo, originally created in 2002 and slightly modified in 2008, is set for a redesign. Carlos Ezpeleta, Director of Dorna, stated: “ The existing logo was created in an era when digital presence was not as significant as it is now. This change allows us to address both graphic and strategic requirements. We have dedicated 18 months to developing a comprehensive marketing strategy.”
This update aims to draw in a new audience, particularly viewers who might not be motorcycle owners or riders. MotoGP is evolving into a global sport that transcends the realm of motorcycles. We possess a dedicated fanbase, yet it is skewed by age. This revamped logo signifies a broader identity, extending beyond the bikes,” comments
Ezpeleta.
Carlos Ezpeleta: “ we must exercise patience regarding the radio as it represents a significant change for the riders ”
Among the new features,
a radio system has been trialed with
Michele Pirro at Montmelò. This system, aimed at enhancing safety, will implement one-way communication from Race Direction to riders starting in 2025.
“We have to be patient as this is a significant change for the riders. The goal is to improve safety in case of issues on the track.,” explained Carlos Ezpeleta.
The management of rivalries among riders is also emphasized. Ezpeleta commended the maturity displayed by
George Martin and Pecco Bagnaia
during their competition for the 2024 title: “The rivalry is present, but our riders manage it honorably. Their behavior, on and off the track, exemplifies humanity and ethics.”
By 2027, smaller engines (850 cc), drastic aerodynamic transformations, and the prohibition of ride-height devices will revolutionize motorcycles. The freeze on engine upgrades until 2026 provides financial relief to manufacturers, though the forthcoming technical hurdles signify an expensive transition. These alterations are integral to a strategy focused on modernizing the sport while preserving its competitive essence. With these modifications, MotoGP is confidently moving towards the future, merging tradition with innovation to engage a progressively diverse audience.
“ Partnering with Liberty Media was precisely what we needed. The transformations we will see ahead will occur not due to Liberty, but alongside Liberty.” specifies
Carlos Ezpeleta, who adds: “ Liberty Media is committed to the long-term, global growth of the sport. Liberty has a deep passion for MotoGP.”
