Friday, Alex Yankowski won the RD Hutchison Memorial at Can-Am Speedway, finding victory over Alex Payne. It is Yankowski’s first win since striking paydirt at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida in February. The event was delayed by an extended shower before the feature, and the Empire Super Sprints main was not contested due to weather.
Larry Wight led the opening lap of the 67-lap event, with Jimmy Phelps moving to the lead on lap 2. Yankowski followed to second, and the lead pair paced the field until Jordan McCreadie drew the first caution period on lap 22. On the restart, high-groove momentum propelled Yankowski to the lead.
Can-Am regular Tim Fuller was charging through the top five and was on the prowl for second when he and Phelps made contact. Fuller suffered a flat and Phelps rolled to a stop, drawing a second caution period. Wight assumed second on the restart, and worked to the lead when racing resumed.
Wight stayed in control until catching the rear of the field on lap 40, and Yankowski nimbly moved through the slower cars and slipped into the lead again. Wight was trying to pass Mike Trautschold when Yankowski made a move off the middle of turn two to take command. Wight battled back, trying to split Trautschold and Yankowski; he bounced off Yankowski’s right rear and subsequently lost two positions.
It was not a done deal yet, as Alex Payne was next to challenge Yankowski. Payne raced to the rear bumper on the outside line, and with three to go had hopes of a win. Building high side momentum, Payne had a move staged before Yankowski moved up to block and preserve his victory. Payne logged his 11th top five of the 2025 SDS campaign, and moved to third in the overall standings. Mat Williamson was third ahead of Wight and Mike Mahaney.
Yankowski’s win trims Williamson’s point lead to 82 markers with eight races left.
Williamson will lead the Super DIRTcar troop back to Albany-Saratoga Speedway for the Malta Massive Weekend on Sept. 20. Williamson won the $10,000 feature last year. The race will offer the final guaranteed starting spot for the Whittaker Cars 200 during Super DIRT Week 53.
Racing action will air live on DIRTVision.
The DIRTcar Sportsman Series returns to action next weekend, when it heads to Mohawk International Raceway on Friday, Sept. 12, and Land of Legends Raceway on Saturday, Sept. 13.
