The NASCAR Cup All-Star Race takes place just before the halfway point of the regular season — 14 races remain until the playoffs begin — but this weekend’s event provides a good point to asses what has taken place this year.

Kyle Larson leads the points, has scored the most playoff points, and led the most laps in the 12 races before Sunday night’s exhibition event at North Wilkesboro, but is that enough?

Maybe not. Dominance early in a season isn’t always rewarded with a Cup title. Consider:

Larson took the points lead from teammate William Byron after winning last weekend’s race at Kansas Speedway, the third victory of the season for Larson.

No driver leading the Cup points after 12 races has gone on to win the championship that season since Martin Truex Jr. in 2017.

Kyle Larson earned his third Cup victory of the season.

Larson has scored a series-best 23 playoff points (15 points via his three wins and eight points via his eight stage victories).

No driver with the most playoff points after 12 races has gone on to win the Cup title that season since Kyle Busch in 2019.

A look at the winners and losers from Sunday’s Cup race at Kansas Speedway.

Take a look at the other end of the playoff picture. Seven drivers have claimed playoff spots with a win, leaving nine spots remaining.

Drivers that made it on points in the Next Gen era (since 2022) had an average of 349.3 points after 12 races. Chase Elliott (378), Ryan Blaney (362) and Tyler Reddick (357) are the only drivers above that point through 12 races this year.

Of the six drivers who made the playoffs on points since 2022, three of them were in the top five in points after 12 races (Martin Truex Jr. was second in 2024, Kevin Harvick was fifth in 2023 and Blaney was third in 2022). Elliott is fourth in the season standings and Blaney is fifth ahead ahead of the All-Star Race.

Only one of the six drivers who made the playoffs on points since 2022 were outside the top 10 after 12 races.

Bubba Wallace was 18th in points after 12 races. He averaged 21.0 points per race in the first 12 races. His performance picked up afterward. He averaged 26.2 points per race in the final 14 races of the regular season that year to earn the final playoff spot.

Among those outside the top 10 in the points and winless this year are: Ross Chastain (11th in the standings), Chris Buescher (12th), Chase Briscoe (13th), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (15th), Ryan Preece (16th), Kyle Busch (18th), John Hunter Nemechek (19th) and Carson Hocevar (20th).

When looking ahead, also consider the schedule. Six of the remaining 14 races in the regular season will be held at either a road course or a drafting track. The road courses are Mexico City (June 15), Chicago Street Race (July 6), Sonoma (July 13) and Watkins Glen (Aug. 10). The drafting tracks are Atlanta (June 28) and the regular-season finale at Daytona (Aug. 23).

Here is a look at the playoff standings after 12 of 26 races in the regular season (those highlighted in yellow are in a playoff spot via a win):

Pagenaud easing back into motorsports after serious injury in 2023. Finding a new career outside car | Sports

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Simon Pagenaud’s career was cut short eight races into the 2023 season when he was badly injured in a crash that caused concussion-related symptoms he’s still battling nearly two years later. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Simon Pagenaud’s career was cut short eight races into the 2023 season when he was badly injured in a crash that caused concussion-related symptoms he’s still battling nearly two years later.

He wants no sympathy, no pity, and looks back fondly on a career in which he won the Indianapolis 500, an IndyCar championship, 15 races and the Rolex 24 at Daytona.

He also doesn’t want to dwell on his personal health, which has been a frustrating rollercoaster of improvements, setbacks, and constant rehabilitation to return to some normalcy and enjoy life with his wife and two young children.

But the Frenchman will never be able to shake the motorsports bug — and he has a goal of one day returning to some form of racing because without goals, what does a racer even have?

For now, though, he’s adjusting to a slow comeback that began last year when Team Penske driver Scott McLaughlin asked Pagenaud to be his driver coach at the Indianapolis 500. It wasn’t as easy as he’d hoped because everything from his vision to the noise at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the vibration he felt as cars whizzed past the Team Penske timing stand disrupted his recovery.

Even so, McLaughlin has him back this year as Pagenaud attempts to find a career outside the racecar.

“Last year he didn’t know how he was going to feel with the noises, but he definitely feels a lot better,” McLaughlin said. “I really enjoy working with him and bringing him back to the speedway, brought him back to something he loves. He’s really intense, too. His preparation is next level.”

It’s just the start for Pagenaud’s transition: Théo Pourchaire, a fellow Frenchman, announced Tuesday that Pagenaud will be his representation as Pourchaire tries to make a full-time move to racing in the United States.

“I don’t want to be involved with the management of 30 drivers, but I want to be involved with the best,” Pagenaud said. “I want to go to teams with a guy I know can perform. I don’t want to put my name on someone and then have a team come back to me and say he didn’t perform, the guy wasn’t good enough. I’ve got to be selective and to me, I think Theo can be one of the best.”

But that’s not all for Pagenaud, who was contacted by Chevrolet and asked to help do simulator work for the manufacturer in a true case of “just what the doctor ordered.”

“I had no idea if I was going to be of use, but I was very attracted by the idea and my doctors were very enthused by the chance to test myself on a moving simulator,” he said. ”I’m not going to lie — it was a big challenge personally — but it was awesome to have a reference, a new reference, of where I was at and how much I was struggling for different things.

“And we decided that we would do this a bit more frequently. It was very useful for my recovery. It’s probably been the most useful therapy I’ve had, and when I’m talking about therapies, physical therapy, eye coordination, reconnecting the bridges in the brain, things that were not as seamless as they used to be.”

Pagenaud is also open to a more formal role with former team Team Penske, where he spent seven seasons and time with their sports car program. Team President Tim Cindric didn’t rule out a role within the organization for the driver who contributed one of Roger Penske’s record 20 Indy 500 wins.

McLaughlin has raved about what Pagenaud has brought him at Indy.

“I’m probably a detriment to my own career throughout the years — I haven’t been as intricate with looking at little details, and I think Simon is the professor in that regard,” McLaughlin said. “He strives for perfection in a lot of ways in how he sets up his car and what he feels. He’s probably allowing me to look into more details and just the way I look at myself and the driving, the lines and what I’m doing with weight jacker and bars. It’s really helped sort of accelerate my progress here, and really am enjoying working with a friend, as well.”

That knowledge could be welcome inside Team Penske as a whole at some point, Cindric said.

“Simon is always welcome within our team,” Cindric said. “But Simon has a lot going on on his own, beyond our team. I know Simon has been offered some really good things to do, but there’s only so much that Simon really wants to do.

“I think he can be a benefit for anybody around this place. I don’t think there’s any limit in terms of what he does, but at the same time, he wants to be productive. Just hanging around probably isn’t what he wants to do, either. I think we have a pretty good balance, and we’re always open to him within our team.”

AUSTIN CINDRIC No. 2 FREIGHTLINER FORD MUSTANG
START: 16TH FINISH: 18TH
RACE RUNDOWN: Austin Cindric and the No. 2 Freightliner team navigated a challenging night in Sunday’s All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, coming away with an 18th-place finish in the annual exhibition event. After starting 16th and eventually racing inside the top 10, Cindric was caught up in a multi-car incident with Ross Chastain and Alex Bowman on Lap 113. The Freightliner Ford Mustang sustained right-side damage and headed to the attention of the crew for repairs and service, pitting twice. Despite going multiple laps down, the team stayed the course, eventually returning to the lead lap following a few cautions, closing out the night with an 18th-place run.

CINDRIC’S THOUGHTS: “We spent the first part of the race working on the balance and made some gains to get ourselves in a pretty good spot before that incident took us out of rhythm. The team did a nice job making repairs and getting us back on the lead lap so we could at least finish it out clean.”
RYAN BLANEY No. 12 MENARDS/WRANGLER FORD MUSTANG
START: 7TH FINISH: 16TH
RACE RUNDOWN: Ryan Blaney was in contention for his second-career All-Star Race win Sunday night at North Wilkesboro Speedway, but a late-race restart did not fall the No. 12 team’s way as the Menards/Wrangler Ford Mustang settled for a 16th-place finish. Blaney worked his way into the top-five by the time of the competition caution on lap 102 and maintained that pace throughout the latter stages of the 250-lap event, reaching third on the leaderboard at the time of the caution on lap 175. Following the promoter’s caution with 34 laps remaining, the No. 12 team opted to stay out to take the ensuing restart from the inside of row one with 28 laps to go. On the second lap following the restart, contact with the No. 1 out of turn four got Blaney sideways and shuffled him back into the middle of three and four-wide battles towards the back of the field as the Menards/Wrangler Ford went on to take the checkered flag 16th.

BLANEY’S THOUGHTS: “We tried to give it a shot at it by staying out at the end there but I got spun out off of [turn] four as I was trying to clear up and it was a rough two laps from there. Not a bad night. I wish we could have contended a little bit better but we got a lot better from Friday.”
JOEY LOGANO No. 22 SHELL-PENNZOIL FORD MUSTANG
START: 4TH FINISH: 2ND
RACE RUNDOWN: Joey Logano led a race-high 139 laps Sunday night in search of his second-consecutive All-Star Race win at North Wilkesboro Speedway, but ultimately settled for a second-place finish in the 250-lap exhibition event. After starting fourth, Logano quickly forced his way to the front from the drop of the green flag as the Shell-Pennzoil Ford Mustang battled for the race lead alongside the No. 6 throughout the first run of the night. Logano took over the top spot for the first time on lap 80 and paced the field through the competition caution on lap 102. The Shell-Pennzoil Ford was back out in front on the ensuing run as Logano distanced himself from the field in the latter stages of the night before the promoter’s caution brought the field back together with 34 laps remaining. The No. 22 team opted to stay out under yellow, allowing Logano to control the restart from the outside of row one as the field lined up to take the green with 28 to go. With nine laps to go and teams on fresher tires making their way to the front of the field, the No. 20 got underneath the No. 22 in turn one and ultimately made the race-winning pass as Logano went on to take the checkered flag from second.

LOGANO’S THOUGHTS: “It’s all you’ve got. I was hoping I could just fight [Christopher Bell] long enough to where the advantage would go away a little bit, but it just never did. I did as best I can blocking my butt off, but once [Bell] got under me he just released the brake and gave me no option to either fence it and wreck or run up in the marbles and spin out. It just stings. I’m upset because we had the best car. We had the best car by a long shot and we didn’t win.”
The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, May 25. Coverage begins at 6:00 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90 with in-car camera angles available all race long through the MAX Driver Cam.

Boot Barn will continue its relationship with Richard Childress Racing, and the driver of the team’s No. 3 NASCAR Cup Series Chevrolet, Austin Dillon, in 2025. According to a press release from the team, Boot Barn will continue to partner with Richard Childress Racing in content creation and primary sponsorship of the No. 3 NASCAR Cup Series car, but Boot Barn will also expand its footprint to include some NASCAR Xfinity Series primary sponsorship of the team this season.

The renewed partnership will kick off this weekend as Austin Dillon will pilot the No. 3 Boot Barn Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing in Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series North Carolina Education Lottery 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Dillon, who was the NASCAR Xfinity Series champion in 2013, is excited to dip his toe back into the series this weekend with support from Boot Barn.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to continue RCR’s relationship with Boot Barn, and I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway,” said Dillon. “Charlotte has been good to me, and I’m thankful to Boot Barn for allowing me the opportunity to help showcase their brand within motorsports and beyond.”

Boot Barn loves the connection that it has found with Richard Childress Racing’s loyal fan base, and it is excited to further expand upon that this season.

“Continuing our partnership with Richard Childress Racing and Austin Dillon allows us to further connect with fans who share a passion for the western lifestyle and motorsports,” said Stephen Loscko, vice president of marketing and media for Boot Barn. “From Charlotte to Mexico City, we’re excited to highlight our brand on the track and through influencer-generated content that brings our story to life. Last year’s cross-collaboration creative storytelling with Austin Dillon and Boot Barn-sponsored rodeo athlete Rocker Steiner has been incredibly well received. We’re excited to continue building on that success.”

RCR and Boot Barn will work together to host western lifestyle influencers to go along with Dillon driving the No. 3 Boot Barn NASCAR Cup Series car in the NASCAR Cup Series debut race in Mexico City.

“Austin Dillon’s authentic interests in western sports and the western lifestyle make him the perfect ambassador for Boot Barn as they continue to showcase their broad selection of cowboy boots and western wear to NASCAR fans,” said Mike Verlander, president of RCR. “Our entire team is looking forward to highlighting that connection and building upon the unique and engaging influencer-driven content that has become a pillar of the partnership.”

Dillon, 35, is a five-time NASCAR Cup Series race winner who has recorded three top 10 finishes through the opening 12 races of the 2025 season. Dillon currently ranks 21st in the championship standings with 14 races remaining in the 26-race regular season.

The following press release is from Suzuki:

Brea, CA – Suzuki Motor USA, LLC and the Twisted Tea/H.E.P. Motorsports/Suzuki team presented by Progressive Insurance are proud to announce their rider lineup for the 2025 Pro Motocross Championship. As the team shifts gears from an intense Supercross season to the grueling summer of outdoor racing, the Suzuki RM-Z450s will be piloted by returning rider Colt Nichols (45) and new addition Benoit Paturel (102).

Colt Nichols carries momentum into the 2025 Pro Motocross season.

Nichols comes into the outdoor series fresh off a win at the Glen Helen warm-up race and is eager to carry that momentum into the 11-round championship. European motocross veteran Benoit Paturel brings international experience and proven racecraft to the team as he prepares for his debut season racing a full U.S. Motocross campaign.

Benoit Paturel (102), former MXGP race winner and 2016 MXoN champion, joins the Suzuki squad for his first full season of American Motocross.

Paturel, from Lyon, France, is a former MXGP race winner and a member of France’s winning team at the 2016 Motocross of Nations. As he joins the American motocross ranks, he brings valuable depth and world-class experience to Suzuki’s outdoor program.

“I am very excited to compete in my first full season of American Motocross,” said Benoit Paturel. “I have been testing on the motorcycle, and I am adapting well to the Suzuki platform.”

“The motocross season is long and challenging after a tough supercross campaign,” said Team Manager Larry Brooks. “The summer motos will test the team’s strength, and I feel we have prepared well coming into the start of the motocross season. Colt is coming off of a win at the Glen Helen pre-race, and Benoit is a fresh face with a ton of experience.”

Ken Roczen (94), who missed the final rounds of Supercross due to injury, is eyeing up a return at select Pro Motocross rounds later in the season, pending recovery.

Kyle Chisholm (11) will not compete in the outdoor series but plans to return for the SuperMotocross (SMX) World Championship later this year.
