NASCAR Cup Series is producing rare number of winners so far in 2025
Nine races into the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, only five drivers (William Byron, Christopher Bell, Josh Berry, Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin) have won a race. Nine races into the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season, only five drivers (William Byron, Christopher Bell, Josh Berry, Kyle Larson and Denny Hamlin) have won a race.
The five winners through nine races to begin a season are the fewest since 1992, per NASCAR.com, when there were only four (Davey Allison, Bill Elliott, Alan Kulwicki and Mark Martin).
That can be attributed to multiple things, but there are two main reasons that the lack of different winners has come to fruition this season.
Now that drivers and teams have three years of experience with NASCAR’s Next Gen Car, which debuted in 2022, some have figured out what works at most tracks and which setups to bring to the track each week.
When the car was new for everyone in 2022, the parody was a talking point all season. Eight drivers went to victory lane during the first nine races. Overall, the 2022 season featured 19 different winners, tying the modern-era record set in 2001.
In 2023, seven drivers won the first nine races of the season, while only six did so in 2024. As drivers and teams have become more familiar with the car, the top organizations have consistently gone to victory lane more often and experienced greater success.
Yes, track position has become as vital as it ever has due to the car’s inability to make passes on most tracks. That has become the major elephant in the room, but it hasn’t stopped organizations like Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing from taking it to the field most weeks.
The other reason for the lack of winners goes back to who has figured out the car and what they need to be successful. Four of the season’s five winners, Byron, Bell, Larson and Hamlin, drive for Hendrick Motorsports and Joe Gibbs Racing and are arguably four of the best drivers in the series right now.
Byron only has one win in the Daytona 500, but his consistency (a series-best 9.1 average finish) has him atop the standings. Bell won three races in a row earlier in the season and currently has three straight top 10s.
Larson has wins at 1.5-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway and half-mile Bristol Motor Speedway, where he led a whopping 411 of the 500 laps. Hamlin did much of the same at Martinsville when he led 274 of 400 laps before going back-to-back the following week at Darlington.
All four drivers are in the top four of the standings and are only separated by a total of 42 points. Larson (15), Byron (12), Bell (11) and Hamlin (10) also have the most wins since the inception of the car in 2022, so it should not come as a shock that they have found success this season.
The last time four drivers dominated at this rate was in 2018 when Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. and Joey Logano won 12 of the first 14 races and 23 of the 36 that season.
While only nine races have been completed so far in 2025, similarities are evident, and so is the car’s overall success.
As talented as all four drivers are, don’t be surprised if they rival the success of the 2018 group and continue their unprecedented start to 2025.
Talladega’s unpredictable nature on Sunday and a versatile schedule during the summer months could throw some obstacles their way, but if the first nine races are any indication, expect more wins to come their way as cars return to the track.

Welcome to the Racing America On SI Live Race Updates page for the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series Wurth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway.
Be sure to refresh this post throughout Sunday’s race as the Live Race Updates story will be updated regularly with the biggest moments from the 400-mile race around the 1.5-mile oval in Fort Worth, Texas, including lead changes, crash replays, the winner of the race, finishing results, and more.
Lap 26: Back to Green!
Austin Cindric, and Josh Berry lead the field into Turn 1, as the Wurth 400 is back under the green flag following the first caution flag period of the race.
Lap 24: Lead Change as Hamlin Crew Mixed Up Signals
Denny Hamlin was apparently supposed to pit with the rest of the field on the pit sequence under caution, but the team mixed up their communication. Hamlin has now come to pit road, which has relinquished the lead to Austin Cindric, who leads for the first time today.
Hamlin was busted for speeding, but was already going to drop to the rear for pitting under a closed pit road. Ryan Blaney, John Hunter Nemechek, and Ty Dillon also had pit road penalties, which dropped them to the rear.
Lap 23: Lead Change!
Denny Hamlin took the race lead after he decided to stay on the racetrack under this caution, while everybody else hit pit road.
Austin Cindric, Josh Berry, and Chris Buescher, who elected to take two tires on the round of pit stops, came off of pit road first, second, and third. Carson Hocevar, the race leader, was fourth off of pit road, but was the first driver who took four tires.
Lap 21: Gragson Brings Out First Caution
While attempting to get around Daniel Suarez in the outside lane in Turn 2 on Lap 21, Noah Gragson lost control of his No. 4 Front Row Motorsports Ford Mustang Dark Horse, and went for a spin to bring out the first caution of the race.
Gragson was able to steer, and gas up his car, which was backing toward the outside wall enough to keep it from slamming into the outside wall, and his car spun harmlessly to the apron on the inside of the track.
Lap 16: Hocevar Continues to Lead From Pole
Carson Hocevar has dominated the opening laps of the Wurth 400 at Texas, and he has now stretched his race lead out to 1.801 seconds over William Byron on Lap 16. Austin Cindric sits third, Michael McDowell is fourth, and Kyle Larson is in fifth.
Lap 6: Daniel Suarez, and Joey Logano on the Move Early
Daniel Suarez (started 25th) and Joey Logano (started 27th) have made some ground up in the opening laps of the Wurth 400 at a Texas Motor Speedway track, which has proven to be tough to make passes at.
Suarez and Logano have both sliced forward six spots from their starting positions. Suarez runs 19th, while Logano is up to 21st.
Green Flag!
First-time NASCAR Cup Series polesitter Carson Hocevar and William Byron lead the field into Turn 1 on the opening lap of Sunday’s Wurth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. Byron got a great initial start and clung to the side of Hocevar’s No. 77 car from the finish line to the backstretch, but Hocevar pulled forward with the lead going into Turns 3 and 4 to lead the opening lap.

3:32 PM ET: Shea Whigham Delivers Command to Start Engines
Actor Shea Whigham, who stars in the upcoming film Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, delivered the command to start engines for Sunday’s Wurth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. The cars have come to life, and will roll onto the 1.5-mile speedway momentarily to perform the pace laps ahead of today’s 267-lap event.
Thanks for accepting this Mission, Shea Whigham!

3:25 PM ET: National Anthem Complete!
Corporal Don Graves, a 100-year-old survivor of Iwo Jima, delivered the United States National Anthem ahead of Sunday’s Wurth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway. Up next will be the command to start engines.
No Cars To The Rear
NASCAR has confirmed that currently, no drivers will have to drop to the rear of the field prior to the green flag of Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Wurth 400 at Texas Motor Speedway.
NASCAR has also revealed the official pre-race festivities schedule:
Sunday’s pit road speed limit has been set at 45 mph, and the pace car will travel around the 1.5-mile speedway at 55 mph. The estimated fuel window for the NASCAR Cup Series car at Texas is 75 laps.
Wurth 400 Race Info
The Wurth 400 will be televised on FS1 and can be streamed on the FOX Sports App with a valid television provider login. Television coverage of the event will begin at 3:30 PM ET. The Performance Racing Network (PRN) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio will provide the event radio broadcast.
For subscribers of the Max streaming service, NASCAR Driver Cam, which streams live in-car camera footage from every car in the field, will be available for today’s race.
The overall race purse, which teams will fight for their portion of in Sunday’s race is a total of $11,055,250.
The race distance is 267 laps around the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway, which equates to a 400.5-mile race distance.
The race will be broken into three Stages. Stage 1 will end at the conclusion of Lap 80, Stage 2 will end at the conclusion of Lap 165, and the race is scheduled to finish at the end of Lap 267, barring an overtime finish.
The winner of Stages 1 and 2 will be awarded one Playoff Point, and the overall race winner will be awarded five Playoff points. The Playoff Points will be added to the reseeded point totals if the drivers make it into the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, and the Playoff Points will be carried through each round of the Playoffs.
The top-10 finishers in Stages 1 and 2 will also receive regular-season championship points. The Stage Winners will receive 10 points for the Stage Win, and the point total will decrease by one point for the top-10 finishers in each Stage.
Chase Elliott is the defending race winner of the Wurth 400 at Texas. Elliott will start from the 29th position driving the No. 9 NAPA 100 Chevrolet Camaro for Hendrick Motorsports.
Carson Hocevar Scores First Pole of Cup Series Career
On Saturday, Spire Motorsports driver Carson Hocevar flashed incredible speed in his No. 77 Chili’s Ride the Dente Chevrolet. Hocevar paced practice, and followed his success in practice with an eye-opening 28.175-second (191.659 mph) lap time on his pole-winning run in qualifying.
The lap, which bested Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron by 0.014 seconds, was the fastest turned at Texas Motor Speedway in the NASCAR Cup Series since the 2018 season.
At a track, where passing is incredibly difficult, Hocevar will start with the best track position imaginable, but the 22-year-old is also quite excited about the prospect of utlizing the No. 1 pit stall on pit road in Sunday’s race.
“What better place to get on a pole. I’m normally so hard on myself, and I still didn’t think I nailed that lap at all. Super proud of this team. And proud because I’ve never been the No.1 pit stall,” Hocevar explained. “I’ve had a lot of issues with pit road, and we’ve had a lot of bad luck. So, I finally get the No. 1 pit stall, so I’m pumped about that.”

After a week off, the Formula 1 schedule resumes with the 2025 Miami Grand Prix on Sunday. The Miami International Autodrome loops around Hard Rock Stadium and first appeared on the F1 schedule in 2022, with Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing winning in 2022 and 2023, while McLaren’s Lando Norris won in 2024. However, it’s Oscar Piastri who was the first to three wins this season, and he’s third in the odds at +270 favorite, with teammate Norris favored at +145 in the latest 2025 Miami Grand Prix odds from FanDuel Sportsbook. Verstappen, who claimed the pole position in qualifying on Saturday, is now listed as the second favorite at +175. The F1 Miami weather forecast is calling for potential heavy rainfall after extreme weather canceled F1’s Academy’s support race.
The lights go out at 4 p.m. ET on Sunday. There are also dozens of Formula 1 props you can play like podium finish, top-six finish, team to go double podium, and more. Piastri and Norris are the +130 co-favorites to record the fastest lap, while Verstappen, who holds the fastest lap record at 1 minute 29.708 seconds, is +850. Norris is +370 to win the race and record the fastest lap. Before analyzing the 2025 Miami Grand Prix starting grid and making any Formula 1 picks, be sure to check out the latest 2025 Miami GP predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s proven projection model.
Developed by daily Fantasy pro and SportsLine predictive data engineer Mike McClure, this proprietary Formula 1 prediction model simulates every race 10,000 times, taking into account factors such as track history and recent results. It’s had a strong history of betting success in motorsports, correctly predicting 20 NASCAR winners since the 2021 season and its projected leaderboards have forecasted winners across multiple racing formats.
The model has been scorching hot when it comes to picking Formula 1 race events dating back to 2021 as well. It nailed 10 victories across the 2021 and 2022 seasons and then forecasted Verstappen’s rise to prominence by calling all 19 of Verstappen’s wins during the 2023 season and each of his first seven wins in 2024.
It went on to predict Norris as a +200 winner in the Netherlands, a +190 winner in Singapore and a +250 winner in Abu Dhabi later in 2024 before projecting Norris for a +185 win at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix. Then it stayed hot by calling Piastri’s wins in Bahrain (-275) and Saudi Arabia (-105), and has now called 32 of the last 49 winners dating back to 2023. Anyone who followed the model’s lead on those plays at sportsbooks and on betting apps could have seen huge returns.
Now, the model has dialed in on the 2025 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix and just released its coveted picks and leaderboard projections. You can head to SportsLine now to see the 2025 Miami Grand Prix projected leaderboard.
Top 2025 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix predictions
One surprise: The model is predicting a points finish (top 10) for Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar that would pay out +200 at BetMGM after correctly predicting a top 10 (+150) for Carlos Sainz of Williams last race in Saudi Arabia. Hadjar is a 20-year-old Frenchman who finished second in Formula 2 last season and he earned a seat with Racing Bulls after Yuki Tsunoda was elevated to Red Bull Racing this offseason to team with Verstappen.
Thus far, the youngster has held his own, overcoming an embarrassing debut where he crashed his car during the formation lap and had to be retired to collect points in two of his last three races. Most sportsbooks have Hadjar priced between -115 and +100 to earn his third top-10 finish in four races, so this is a tremendous value given the team’s recent success. How to make 2025 Miami Grand Prix picks
The model has revealed its win prediction and is also targeting a driver going off with double-digit odds to make a surprising surge up the 2025 Miami GP leaderboard. Anyone who backs him could hit it big. You can find out who he is, and see all of the model’s F1 picks and predictions, at SportsLine.

Last Sunday, one day after the XFL ran into the scheduled time slot for SNL causing NBC distress, another brouhaha was created between two acronyms — NASCAR and FOX. FOX, along with NBC and Turner Broadcasting, bought the TV rights to NASCAR in a $2.8 billion deal. Last weekend’s race debuted the knew alliance.
In an ingenious ploy to create more money for itself FOX digitally removed the logos of sponsors who did not also sponsor the network’s broadcast of the record setting Budweiser Shootout Challenge. Sunday’s event attracted more viewers than ever before, who saw cars missing their colorful decals.
Now FOX has to patch up its relationship with NASCAR, which relies on cars displaying more corporate sponsors than the Olympic broadcasts from Sydney.
But this just hints at a trend that is growing in sports. Sponsorship. The events are being overshadowed by the sponsors. FOX’s deplorable actions concerning the removal of logos received more coverage from ESPN.com and CNNSI.com and every other news worthy publication than did the winner of the race.
Each year people watch the Super Bowl to see the most anticipated commercials of the year, or for the MTV-Pespi-Visa-Heineken-Nike-Lays-Gateway-Amazon.com-McDonald’s-Dodge-and a half dozen other corporate sponsors half time shows, with live views from the Goodyear or Fuji blimp.
We know that tennis star Venus Williams signed the largest endorsement contract for a woman and golfer Tiger Woods gets gadzillions of dollars to bounce a golf ball on his wedge in front of a Buick or Nike swoosh.
The only way to get away from the shameless promotions and gimmicks is to actually attend the games. A commercial-free experience is only available by going there right? Wrong. Any visit to Continental Airlines Arena, PacBell Park or Pro-Player Stadium shows that corporate sponsors have reared their ugly heads into the forums.
After all, those commercial breaks need a counterpart in the stadiums to entertain fans while the networks collect money from the pre-sold air time. If a three-hour football game has one hour of actual playing, guess how much is allotted to blatant promotions, reminders of refreshments and advertisements for the official gear of (insert your preferred team here).
The games are not about win or lose, they are becoming another spectacle where everyone must be satisfied even if the home team (gasp) loses. The game is fading into the background while fan participation, contests and give-aways come to the forefront.
Even Cornell is not immune to the sponsorship debacle. Watching yet another sub-ten-year-old child being pushed by Cornell sports marketing interns onto the Subway “Find The Banner Contest”, I was wondering how low our glorious university would stoop in the sponsorship game.
Promotions have risen substantially at basketball games within the last year. Now with a Subway “Find the Banner Contest” of its own, a Subway Shootout, a shot for two free United Airlines tickets, and the new Red Zone, the games are an ode to capitalism.
Attending almost every game this season, I’ve witnessed dozens of people winning free subs as the fast-food chain tries to imprint its name on everything Cornell. I’ve even seen two people win airplane tickets — one by a three-quarters-court shot, and the other by a blind-folded free throw. But while these attractions have brought more people to the games, the contests take precedence over the game play. The sponsor’s name must be mentioned in the same room as hundreds of gullible college students.
It’s disappointing to see our alma mater succumb to the same fate as pro sports, although it is a nice change to see someone winning at the Cornell men’s basketball games.
People pay extra for the premium channels such as HBO, Showtime, and Encore because they provide commercial-free entertainment. The ever-lasting pursuit of more money between FOX and NASCAR should be abandoned for the good of the sport. The continual arguments and obsession of sponsorship will only decrease interest.
A Visa ad once told us to marvel at sport in this time of over-commercialization, before molding synchronized swimmers into the company’s name.
Realistically, though, no program could be shown without adequate financial support, the challenge is to keep the commercialism from detracting from the event.
But don’t worry about NASCAR. Lou D’Ermilio, vice president of FOX’s communication isn’t.
“Our sales department is made up of clever folks,” he said to CNNSI.com, “I’m sure they’ll find a way to please advertisers in some other way.”

The Cadillac Formula 1 Team unveiled its new logo in a video released ahead of the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, offering a first look at the branding that will debut when the team joins the FIA Formula One World Championship grid in 2026.
The partnership between TWG Motorsports and GM has created a distinctly American team with unique attributes. Those attributes and Cadillac’s bold heritage are reflected in the team’s logo and branding.
“Cadillac is honored to share the F1 stage with the best luxury brands from around the world. It’s a brand whose legacy on and off the track is filled with innovation, technological precision, and timeless beauty,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “Our journey has been long but from the very beginning, it has been about ambition… audacity… and now acceleration.”
