NASCAR, Indy 500 double duty has Kyle Larson at mercy of Weather Dog
Kyle Larson sure took the drama out of that one. No need to check the scoring monitors or fetch pictures from the Fotomat. Kyle Larson sure took the drama out of that one.
No need to check the scoring monitors or fetch pictures from the Fotomat. The official margin of victory was seven-tenths of a second (0.712 is the officially official margin), which compared to a year ago seems like Kyle lapped the field.
Next up, all NASCAR eyes turn to a little village in North Carolina called North Wilkesboro, where the reborn antique of a racetrack will again be host to racing’s version of the All-Star Game, but with enough complications, considerations and adjustable formats to make the infield fly rule simple to explain.
More on that as the week goes on and our auditors figure it all out.
Also, we’ll send the Weather Dog on a long walk in order to bring back an extended forecast.
We’ll wonder why Poor Ol’ Brad Keselowski (that’s becoming his official title, by the way) tempted fate prior to Kansas.
And we’ll visit a stat many of us didn’t even know existed until Sunday — career laps led — and see which Hall of Famer is NASCAR’s all-time leader. You’ll never believe it.
(Psst … yes, you will).
Sink the clutch, jam that cue-ball shifter knob up to the top left, and let’s get up to speed.
First Gear: Kyle Larson gladly ruins the show at Kansas
Over the years, maybe even over generations, many NASCAR fans have tried to watch Formula One but soon left bored. Too often, the top driver/team combo was fastest in qualifying, got the jump from the pole and never looked back — leading from first green to the checkers is no rarity in that high-tech world.
Well, Kyle Larson and his No. 5 Hendrick Chevy team went all Max Verstappen on ’em over the weekend at Kansas. He won the pole Saturday, won the first stage Sunday, then the second stage, then the final for the checkers.
Oh, he also grabbed that new-for-2025 bonus point for posting race-day’s fastest lap.
Makes you wonder why he didn’t stop outside of Turn 2 on his way home and pull a slot handle at the Hollywood Casino.
Overall, Kyle bankrolled seven more playoff bonus points (five for the win, one each for the two stage wins), and we’ve seen those bonus points save a driver’s season when things get a tad sideways in the playoffs. Those bonus points can be big, big, big.
Kyle’s points might also be gone, gone, gone in two weeks.
Why? Glad you asked.
Second Gear: Will it rain at the Indy 500? Expert forecast here
Remember last year at the rain-delayed Indy 500 when Team Kyle waited out the weather and basically elected to miss the start of that night’s Coke 600 in Charlotte? Indy eventually started, Kyle ran the whole thing and got to Charlotte, ready to take over his No. 5 ride, just as that race was officially shortened by rain.
It was a rotten predicament for Kyle and team owner Rick Hendrick, who’d invested a lot of time, money and sponsor equity for the Indy effort. Few people disagreed with his decision to stick it out at the Brickyard.
Few, but not none.
Hence, a new NASCAR rule this year. If a driver misses a points-paying race for something other than medical reasons but is granted a playoff waiver regardless (as Kyle did last year), he must forfeit all playoff bonus points he’s accumulated so far, as well as ANY FUTURE PLAYOFF POINTS.
Yikes.
With that in mind, let’s bring back the Weather Dog.
Good news: The tail is wagging. Of three extended-weather forecasts he sniffed, one says 20% of Indy rain on May 25, one says 0%, and the other doesn’t stretch that far.
But as we know, the more extended a forecast, the thinner it is in certainty.
Third Gear: NASCAR’s all-time laps leader? Come on
Post-race at Kansas, a neat little sidebar involved news of Kyle going over 10,000 laps led for his career. According to stats from NASCAR, he’s the 22nd driver, and the third current racer (after Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin) to reach that mark.
Only another 40,000 or so before he catches King Richard Petty, who, unsurprisingly, is the all-time leader at 51,514. Whaddaya say we rattle off the rest of the top 10, which offers no surprises whatsoever …
2. Cale Yarborough, 31,556; 3. Bobby Allison, 27,556; 4. Dale Earnhardt, 25,714; 5. David Pearson, 25,422; 6. Jeff Gordon, 24,936; 7. Darrell Waltrip 23,134; 8. Rusty Wallace, 19,951; 9. Kyle Busch, 19,441; 10. Jimmie Johnson, 18,941.
Yes, the King is the King for a reason (200 wins, after all), but that 20,000-lap gap between him and Cale is somewhat deceiving. Keep in mind, for the first decade of Petty’s career, when he was most dominant, he was getting between 40-60 starts a year.
Fourth Gear: Brad Keselowski still taking on water
What another Sunday to forget for POBK (Poor ol’ Brad Keselowski).
Yet again, there were promising signs. He started 36th due to pre-qualifying issues (no, that wasn’t a promising sign) but picked off spots and by the end of Stage 1 was 14th (yes, promising).
He continued moving forward and finished Stage 2 sixth (more promising) and was soon running second to Chase Elliott, which was a promise soon broken when a tire let go and sent Kez into the wall. He finished 37th. Of 38. Of the 36 drivers to start all 12 races, he’s 33rd in points.
Prior to Kansas weekend, Kez made a promotional stop in Southeast Georgia, at the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay. The press release described it as an event “honoring America’s undersea war fighters.” He’ll carry the group’s colors and logo at the Coke 600 on Memorial Day Weekend.
All worthy and good, no doubt. They do important stuff at that base, and all of us on dry land are thankful.
But for symbolism’s sake, visiting such a group during your own underwater season might be a tempt of racing fate. Kez might want to visit an aircraft carrier soon.

Privateer Ferrari Wins 24 Hours of Le Mans

Ferrari’s 499P won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the third consecutive time in 2025, but this year’s trophy won’t end up in the company’s Maranello, Italy, headquarters. Wearing number 83, and tellingly finished in bright yellow instead of red, the winning car was entered by an Italian privateer team named AF Corse.
The team entered a single car in the day-long race, which was a bold move. If it breaks, you’re out. It also enlisted the help of three respected drivers: Robert Kubica, Phil Hanson, and official Ferrari driver Yifei Ye. The win made history in more ways than one: Ye, who was born in Xi’an, became the first Chinese racer to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Kubica, who is from Kraków, became the first Polish driver on the podium.

Ferrari’s odds of winning Le Mans looked bleak after qualifying: The quickest 499P secured seventh and the winning car started back in 11th. However, the three 499Ps ended up near the front of the pack almost immediately after the start. The trio put up one hell of a fight against the Porsche 963s, and for a while it looked like Ferrari would score a one-two-three finish. And, the podium could have looked much different had Alessandro Pier Guidi not spun the #51 499P while entering the pits about 20 hours into the race.
Second place went to a Porsche 963 (#6) driven by Matt Campbell, Kevin Estre, and Laurens Vanthoor; It crossed the finish line roughly 14 seconds behind the winner. One of the two factory-backed 499Ps (#51) finished third, about 28 seconds behind AF Corse’s car. Its sister car (#50) ended the race in fourth place.
Cadillac’s V-Series.R took pole position for the first time, but two of the four cars that lined up on the starting grid retired due to engine problems. The remaining two cars placed fifth (#12) and eighth (#38), respectively. Aston Martin’s long-awaited return to the top category at Le Mans didn’t go as planned, either: It entered two examples of the Valkyrie, which finished 13th (#009) and 15th (#007), respectively.
Inter Europol Competition took first place in the LMP2 category in an Oreca 07. And, while Porsche didn’t manage to secure its 20th overall win at Le Mans, it nonetheless beat rival Ferrari in the GT3 class. First place went to the Manthey 1st Phorm team’s Porsche 911 GT3 R, while Vista AF Corse’s Ferrari 296 GT3 finished second and TF Sport’s Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R (which sounded awesome) secured third.

NASCAR Mexico City results: Elliott, Bowman, Byron earn top 10s in inaugural Cup Series event

MEXICO CITY – Hendrick Motorsports’ consistency and speed in 2025 certainly made it across the border this weekend.
Chase Elliott (third) and Alex Bowman (fourth) gave the organization a pair of top-five showings as the NASCAR Cup Series held a points-paying event at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City for the first time on Sunday afternoon.
William Byron, who extended his points lead over teammate Kyle Larson to 67 tallies (unofficially), also came home with a ninth-place showing thanks to a furious late rally down the stretch.
Unpredictability loomed large from the start as rain showers brought out a caution flag before the completion of lap one. From there ensued a mixed bag of fuel strategies and, in the early going, a balancing wet and dry tires.
But Elliott’s speed and road-course acumen showed up in spades as he twice navigated through traffic after pit stops before coming home with his best finish of the year.
RELATED: Jeff Gordon to give command at Mexico City
“I felt like we were in a really good spot, and I was super excited about having tires,” Elliott said. “I think we just pressed so hard to try and get through the traffic that when we got singled out, I just didn’t have a lot of pace left.
“Really proud of our LLumar Chevy group for sticking with it … Finally got going there a few runs from the end and (crew chief) Alan (Gustafson) made a good call to get us on tires.”

For Bowman, the performance was a testament to toughness as he fought through back pain resulting from a crash at Michigan International Speedway the week prior to register his third top-five finish of the season.
Elliott picked up a pair of stage points in the race’s first segment and both he and Byron were running well inside the top 10 toward the end of stage two before short pitting. Bowman, meanwhile, stayed out and finished third, earning eight valuable markers to add to his cushion above the playoff bubble.
An important moment in the outcome of the event came with 36 laps to go as Carson Hocevar spun and stalled, bringing out the caution flag. It would be the last stoppage of the event.
Having already pitted in the final stage, Bowman stayed out, assuming the third position, and with fresh tires, Elliott and Byron began their march forward when the green waved again. Byron was momentarily hindered by some contact early in the stint but found his way through while it was smooth sailing for Elliott, who picked his way forward spot-by-spot before running out of laps.
Kyle Larson qualified highest among the Hendrick Motorsports contingent in sixth. However, just seven laps in, Larson was caught up in a crash not of his own doing as Kyle Busch lost control, slamming into the No. 5 Valvoline Chevy.
With every point mattering, however, the team furiously went to work in the garage to get the car back on track. Larson returned several laps down and after repairs and pit stops, laid down the race’s fastest lap, earning a bonus point in the process.
The NASCAR Cup Series will return next week with a race at Pocono Raceway. The green flag is set to wave at 2 p.m. next Sunday and will air on Prime Video.

Treyten Lapcevich Dominates at Berlin Raceway to Earn First ARCA Menards Series Win – Speedway Digest

In a commanding performance at the Berlin Raceway, Treyten Lapcevich scored his first-career ARCA Menards Series victory, leading all 200 laps from the pole to claim a flag-to-flag win. The triumph also marked the first ARCA victory for Nitro Motorsports since their planned acquisition of Venturini Motorsports (VMS), as they continue to build their efforts towards the complete transition at the end of the season.
Making his second ARCA start of 2025 even more memorable, Lapcevich topped the charts in qualifying before executing a flawless race to seal a dominant performance in front of a packed Berlin Raceway crowd. This was his second trip to the podium in 2025, building from his third-place result in Phoenix with VMS earlier this season.
“This is a huge moment for Nitro Motorsports,” explained team owner Nick Tucker. “To get our first win at a track as tough as Berlin, and to do it in such dominant fashion, says a lot about our team and about Treyten. We’re proud to work alongside Venturini Motorsports and appreciate their support in helping us get here.”
The partnership between Nitro Motorsports and Venturini Motorsports proved fruitful, combining resources and experience to field a competitive program that delivered immediate success. With multiple strong results early in the season, including those of Thad Moffitt, the culmination of a rookie program and a seasoned winning effort has proven to be massively successful.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” added race winner Treyten Lapcevich. “To win my first ARCA Menards Series race, lead every lap, and bring home a win for Nitro Motorsports and Venturini is something I’ll never forget. The car was perfect all night, and I can’t thank everyone involved enough.”
For Venturini Motorsports, the result added to their legacy in the ARCA Menards Series, their 108th series win. Still, this one held extra meaning as it came in collaboration with a rising new team that will continue their winning ways in 2026 and beyond.
“We’ve worked with a lot of great partners over the years, and it’s been fantastic teaming up with Nick Tucker and Nitro Motorsports,” continued Billy Venturini, owner of Venturini Motorsports. “They brought a lot to the table, and to see the car win in such dominant fashion is proof that this kind of collaboration can be powerful. We’re excited about what’s ahead.”
The win solidifies Lapcevich as a name to watch in the ARCA Menards Series and underscores Nitro Motorsports’ continued growth across multiple racing platforms.

“I tried to treat it like when I go to Asia, just drink bottled water and be careful in the shower and brush your teeth with bottled water, but I just went downhill,” he said. “Couldn’t keep anything in. Everything just went straight through me. I felt really queasy, and my mind was there, but my body just had so much pressure in my stomach. Crazy weekend and everyone dug deep.”
It appeared to be a tough week overall, which started with a mechanical issue on his team’s charter flight that paused his initial trip to Mexico. He slept on the floor of his hauler before the race, unsure if he would be able to compete at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
