CONCORD N.C – After an electric Coca-Cola 600, the NASCAR Cup Series is halfway through the regular season. Eight drivers have won at least one race, thus locking into the playoffs with 13 races remaining before the postseason begins at Darlington.

Hendrick Motorsports is off to another great start. In the first half of the regular season, the team piled up four wins (three from Kyle Larson, one from William Byron), 19 top 5’s, five poles, 13 stage wins and another Daytona 500 trophy.

All four of the organization’s drivers reside in the top 10 in points with Byron first, Larson second, Chase Elliott fourth and Alex Bowman 10th.

“So far, it’s been very positive,” Hendrick Motorsports vice chairman Jeff Gordon said. “The consistency, to me, tells me how much our teams are working together and sharing information and showing up at the racetrack with race cars and setups and race teams in general that are very common.

“Obviously, starting the season with a DAYTONA 500 win is fantastic. Larson just picked up his third win (May 11 at Kansas Speedway) in back-to-back dominant races. That is obviously very positive and that motivates everybody, right? But it also puts the target on our back from our competitors. But then, to see where all four teams have been in points, with some setbacks, that’s pretty impressive.”

The final 13 races will come at a variety of tracks, presenting challenges to all drivers in the field.

Yet even with so many obstacles, Hendrick Motorsports will work together to get all four of its drivers into the playoffs.

“So, that means the world to me and to Rick.” Gordon said. “That’s what you’re trying to build is this line of communication. This trust in one another. So, you’re seeing all four teams push and elevate one another and that’s great.”

With the first half of the regular season in the books, let’s recap how all four drivers have done so far and look ahead to the next 13 events:

Larson gets second Homestead Miami victory over Alex Bowman

Kyle Larson

Currently, Larson is first in the playoff standings. He has notched three wins, eight top fives, eight stage wins, and one pole.

Larson got his first win of the year at Homestead-Miami Speedway on March 23, fighting from the back to start the race. With 10 laps to go, Larson chased down his teammate Bowman, who’d led 43 laps, and cruised to victory lane.

Larson’s notorious superspeedway misfortune finally turned around as he crossed the finish line in third at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Then, his second win of the season came in dominating fashion at Bristol Motor Speedway, as he led 411 of 500 laps and swept both stages. He carried that momentum into the following week, at Talladega Superspeedway, scoring a second-place finish, the best showing at a drafting track in his career.

Larson kept the top five streak alive with a fourth at Texas. The following week at Kansas Speedway, he ran away with the lead and took a dominant victory, becoming the second driver to three wins in 2025.

“It was great to qualify good and to maintain the lead for the majority of the race was good,” Larson said in an interview with FOX post-race.

Larson scored the most points at Bristol, Talladega, Texas and Kansas, briefly taking the points lead with his 60-point sweep in the Sunflower State.

Larson was preparing to run the #H1100 during the week of the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro. He was in the midst of pulling double duty, practicing for the Indianapolis 500 where he qualified 21st. Still, he and made it back to North Wilkesboro just in time for the All-Star Race, briefly leading from the back before a tire failure relegated him to 21st.

Despite some tough luck in the Indy 500 and Coke 600, Larson remains just 29 points back of Byron and is at the top of the board in the playoff standings. The 32-year-old has four combined wins at Nashville Superspeedway and Michigan International Speedway, the next two circuits on the schedule.

Chase Elliott

Elliott has been the model of consistency thus far and is the only driver to have finished in the top 20 in all 13 events.

The No. 9 team started the season with a bang, winning the Clash at Bowman Grey Stadium, an exhibition race before the season opener at Daytona International Speedway. He held off the hard charging Ryan Blaney en route to his first win since Texas of last year.

“I know it’s not a points race, but it is nice to win for sure and just really proud of our team for continuing to keep our heads down and push forward,” Elliott said in an interview following his win.

One of the defining moments of the season so far for Elliott came at the Circuit of the Americas. The driver of the No. 9 mounted an impressive comeback after being spun on the very first lap, rallying all the way through the field to finish fourth. He followed that with back-to-back top 10s at Phoenix Raceway and Las Vegas the following two weeks.

Two weeks later, he led 42 laps and finished fourth at Martinsville Speedway. The next week at Darlington Raceway, he registered an eighth-place finish. Another two weeks later, he sliced and diced his way through Talladega traffic to come home fifth.

He rounded out the season’s first half with a sixth-place run at Charlotte.

Elliott’s consistency has kept him afloat in the championship standings. He is only 84 markers behind leader and fellow Hendrick Motorsports driver Byron. He is seeded ninth currently in the playoffs at 148 points above the cutline.

With four road courses and his home track, Atlanta Motor Speedway, mixed in the final 13 races before the playoffs begin, keep an eye out for the No. 9 Chevrolet as Elliott searches for his next win of the season.

William Byron

Byron sits atop the points standings, having six top fives, two poles, and three stage wins thus far.

His season started the way every driver wants his season to start, by winning the DAYTONA 500. He started in the top 10 and stayed there for the majority of the night, evading multiple wrecks. When the white flag came out, Byron stayed cool and dodged a massive crash on the final lap to take the checkered flag and become only the fifth NASCAR driver ever to win the Great American Race in back-to-back years. He joined Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Sterling Marlin and Denny Hamlin on that list.

“There’s no negatives to winning, right?” Byron said. “You get a chance to go and do things that you don’t normally get to do and you just try to embrace it because the last seven, eight months we haven’t won a race so I think anytime that happens, you realize how difficult this sport is and just try and enjoy it as much as you can.”

He was back in contention to win at Atlanta the following week until being caught up in a crash with just three laps remaining.

The next race at Circuit of the Americas, Byron and Christopher Bell dueled as they chased down the ailing car of Kyle Busch. With a five of laps left, both Byron and Bell overtook Busch who was leading at the time. Byron chased down Bell but couldn’t quite get around as he finished second.

The No. 24 team has shown resilience as well. A pit stop at Phoenix Raceway trapped Byron a lap down until he rallied all the way back for a sixth-place finish. He was a threat to win yet again at Las Vegas a week later until a sequence of cautions and pit stops relegated him to fourth.

In recent weeks, Byron has put on a couple of the most dominant races of his career. He led 243 laps at Darlington Raceway, winning both stages. But an unlucky final pit cycle placed him in third behind Bell and Tyler Reddick. A late caution allowed him to utilize an overtime finish to race back to second place.

“We lost control and once we lost control it was too late in the going to kinda get back up there so yeah, it sucks, I’m sure it’ll sting a lot tonight, but there’s still a lot of positives, it just stings in the moment for sure,” Byron said in a post-race interview.

Bristol and Talladega gave Byron another set of top 10 finishes. At Bristol, he rallied from 26th all the way to sixth place by the end of the day. Despite getting caught up in Talladega grid lock, the No. 24 driver managed to make it to third place when everything was said and done.

Then, Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 served as another statement race for the No. 24 team. Byron swept the first three stages, going toe-to-toe with Denny Hamlin and Carson Hocevar as the three exchanged passes and the lead throughout the late going. Byron led 283 of 400 laps before falling just short in a second-place run.

Byron’s tenacity and consistency across the first half of the season has him currently seeded fourth in the playoff standings and the No. 24 is a threat to win nearly every week. With a variety of different track types and Daytona lumped into the final 13 race stretch of the regular season, Byron will have several chances to add wins and playoff points to his 2025 resume.

Alex Bowman

Bowman and the No. 48 team have had a solid first half of the season. Sitting 10th in the points standings with two top fives and two poles, Bowman and his team are in good standing to make another playoff run.

Bowman quietly navigated his way through traffic during the DAYTONA 500 and was near the front in the closing stages of the race. On the final lap, he drove through the final big crash of the night and came home sixth.

The No. 48 driver overcame a penalty to finish ninth at Circuit of the Americas and followed it up with two seventh-place runs at Phoenix and Las Vegas. Bowman qualified on the pole at Homestead-Miami Speedway and led late in the race before ultimately finishing second to fellow Hendrick Motorsports driver, Larson.

“I just kinda burnt my stuff up.” Bowman said in a post-race interview. “I saw (Larson) coming, so I moved around a little bit and not when he passed me but the time before that I hit (the wall) pretty hard and ended up bending something enough where I lost the right front feel.”

Wins: 0
Poles: 2
Top fives: 2
Top 10s: 7
Laps led: 110

Talladega provided the entire organization with a solid day as Bowman pushed his way to a seventh-place finish. Kansas served as another highlight as Bowman stayed in the top 10 throughout the race and brought it home in fifth place.

Despite some setbacks, Bowman and the No. 48 team have not backed down. The No. 48 team’s ability to get back up after every punch is one reason it is still a threat to make a deep playoff run. Bowman is 66 points above the cutoff line in the playoff standings in 12th place.

He has some strong tracks ahead as well. He is the reigning Chicago Street Course champion and should be a threat to get a win and lock himself into the playoffs.

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Nashville Superspeedway next. The race premieres at 7 p.m. on Amazon Prime Video, Sirius XM, and PRN Radio.

A bit of trouble for the NASCAR industry on the way to Mexico City. Two chartered flights have been held up in Charlotte. On Wednesday this week, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had to change his travel plans after his plane was held up in another country.

Today is the day that drivers and team members are expected to arrive in Mexico City for the NASCAR weekend. It is a historic race weekend with the first international points race for the Cup Series since the 1958 season. So, all eyes are on the sport as they embark on this journey.

Ryan Ellis, driver of the No. 71 Chevy for DGM Racing, posted a photo from the Charlotte airport. Firefighters are seen on the tarmac as NASCAR industry members walk off the plane.

Ellis reported in a prior tweet that upon attempting takeoff, the “plane made a small boom” and returned to its gate. So, not an ideal start to the weekend for these NASCAR drivers and team members.

Matt Weaver of Sportsnaut and The Sporting News reported that passengers on the flight were told by the captain that “engine 2 blew.” The captain suspected a bird had possibly flown into the engine just as the plane attempted to take off. Scary situation.

So, the NASCAR Mexico City weekend is on hold for these industry members. While they have run into a bit of trouble, NASCAR has made arrangements for another flight.

NASCAR Mexico City weekend off to rough start with travel woes

Currently, NASCAR Is trying to find an alternative flight for the personnel left in Charlotte to get to Mexico City. Finding a last-minute international flight is not the easiest thing to do. However, the weekend can’t go on without these drivers and team members at the track.

Tomorrow is when the action starts. There will be extensive practice sessions for both the Cup and Xfinity Series. This is a new track for the field. Even drivers who competed in the Xfinity Series races in Mexico City years ago, they will not necessarily recognize the configuration being used this weekend, although it is similar.

The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is a historic venue that hosts all kinds of races throughout the year. Daniel Suárez is used to racing on the oval back in his NASCAR Mexico Series days. F1 races at the track on a yearly basis, but that is not the exact same configuration that NASCAR will compete on.

There are a lot of questions right now around the weekend. The main one at the moment is when these drivers and teams will actually get to the city and settle in. Then there is the altitude change. Mexico City sits 7,500 feet above sea level, and these NASCAR drivers are not used to that kind of elevation. The air will be thinner, and blood oxygen levels will be lower than the drivers are used to.

Drivers like Tyler Reddick have been doing what they can to train for the intense altitude difference. While others have somewhat shrugged it off with it being only a one-time thing this season. We will see if those who have prepared the most gain an advantage on the field or not.

Amazon Prime Video’s debut season in NASCAR has seen the streaming giants make significant gains in key demographics after hosting three races on the platform in 2025. Prime Video carried the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte for its debut, which saw Kyle Larson suffer a double Indy 500-NASCAR DNF.

Nashville followed it, won by 2023 champion Ryan Blaney, and Michigan last weekend, won by one of the Championship favorites, Denny Hamlin. NASCAR has seen a drop in viewership from its more traditional, older viewers amid its stint on Prime Video, but it has seen the sport make significant gains in younger demographics and has earned praise for its coverage.

However, senior FOX Sports executive Michael Mulvihill has branded NASCAR’s gain in younger viewership at the expense of its traditional base a “predictable spin.” Overall, NASCAR’s viewership on Prime Video has been similar to that of the NFL’s debut on the streaming platform three years ago.

Viewership has been down double-digits overall — but up double-digits in the key young adult demographics, which is being touted as a significant win for NASCAR. Cup Series racing on Amazon Prime Video has averaged 2.27 million viewers through the three races in Charlotte, Nashville, and Michigan, which is a 21% decrease from last year’s three equivalent races on FOX and FS1 at Charlotte, St. Louis and Sonoma, which averaged a viewership of 2.88M.

The more positive numbers show that viewership is up nearly a third among adults 18-34, from 177,000 to 233,000, 11% among adults 18-49, from 475,000 to 600,000, and 21% among adults 25-54, from 642,000 to 706,000. As the demographics age, the stark drop rears its head.

Sign up to our NASCAR newsletter here.

Viewership among adults 55+ is down 40% from 2.03M million last year to 1.21M this year. The previous year’s TNF on Prime Video yielded similar results, posting a 28% decrease from the prior year on FOX but an 11% increase in adults 18-34.

Nonetheless, some NASCAR fans align with the sport and believe there are positives to take from the latest figures. “This is a win for NASCAR. People will try to spin this as a negative, but in the long run, this is a win,” one tweeted.

“Showing the age streaming platforms and age of NASCAR fans, overall good to see younger people watching,” another said. “Massive win for NASCAR, the older generation will always complain but finally numbers moving in the right direction,” a third reacted.

DON’T MISS

“Sorry but the gains with younger viewers is a major win and worth the overall decline in viewership,” a fourth stated. “There’s a strong case that a double-digit drop in total viewership is worth it if it means a double-digit gain in the young demos,” a fifth reacted,

“Something the NHL should consider — though with about 350K avg viewership on cable, a move to Prime could make that overall number alarmingly small.”

Ford CEO Jim Farley Dishes Details for 2027 Hypercar Class

This weekend at Le Mans, Ford has command of the spotlight. This weekend at Le Mans, Ford has command of the spotlight. Not only has the Blue Oval amassed the largest gathering of Mustang race cars to ever compete at the Circuit de la Sarthe for its Mustang Challenge single-make series, but it will also campaign two Mustang GT3 race cars in Le Mans’ epic 24-hour race.

As if all this attention wasn’t enough, Ford also revealed a couple of key details for the company’s heavily anticipated Hypercar debut in 2027. Among the latest puzzle pieces to fall into place, FoMoCo announced that it would tab ORECA to lead chassis development on the car that will compete for overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In addition to naming its chassis developer, Ford announced Dan Sayers as lead for the Hypercar program. (More on him in a second.)

In January, Ford announced its intentions for the top step at Le Mans. The company will field a full factory effort in the FIA World Endurance Championship’s (WEC) Hypercar class, with the goal of capturing its first overall Le Mans victory since 1969—the final of four straight for the Ford GT40 sports car. Recall that the Ford GT’s Le Mans revival and subsequent Le Mans win in 2016 was a class win and not an overall victory.

This go around, things are different, and the message is direct.

“We’re here to win Le Mans,” asserted Farley in a sit-down with media on Thursday. The new car is set to make its debut at the season-opening round of WEC competition in less than two years. We don’t even know what it looks like yet, but we know the Ford Hypercar has one mission.

As Farley pointed out in the accompanying press announcement, it’s been over 50 years since Ford has climbed atop Le Mans’ overall podium. “That is long enough,” says Farley. “In 2027, we are coming with the same level of expectation, and we are entrusting ORECA to help us take on Ferrari and the other top-class teams as we did back in the 1960s.”

If you’re a fan of sports car racing, ORECA is a familiar name. To anyone else, read on.

Hugues de Chaunac, a math teacher turned race car driver, founded ORECA (Organisation Exploitation Compétition Automobile Motorsport) in 1973, first as a racing team. Now, the company designs, assembles, develops, and fine-tunes chassis, engines, and system architectures. It’s also responsible for nearly 240 victories in the undercard LMP2 series and 10 consecutive wins at the Le Mans 24 Hours. ORECA is one of four chassis suppliers for WEC’s top-tier Hypercar class, joined by Dallara, Ligier, and Multimatic.

So, who’s going to captain this new ship?

Ford Performance Team Sayer
Dan SayersCameron Neveu

Meet Dan Sayers. Prior to his new position, Sayers was Program Director at Red Bull Ford Powertrains, where he helped develop the power unit for the new 2026 Formula 1 regulations. Before Ford, Sayer spent 10 years at Aston Martin’s racing team, Prodrive, where he captured multiple class victories at Le Mans as design and development lead and, eventually, technical director. He also worked at Ricardo, a transmission builder for multiple disciplines of auto racing.

“Ford Performance is taking on so many different challenges around the racing world, but to lead Ford back to its spiritual home at Le Mans was a challenge I could not turn down,” said Sayers.

It’s an exciting time for Ford Performance fans as the prospect of climbing endurance racing’s largest summit solidified a bit more this weekend. Still, Farley isn’t allowing himself to get swept up in the excitement.

“I’m just focused on the work that we have to do,” the Ford boss says of the Hypercar program. “I’m only excited when we win. And that hasn’t happened yet.”

MEXICO CITY (AP) — NASCAR’s first Cup Series race outside the United States was off to a bumpy start Friday with several teams yet to arrive in Mexico City because of travel issues in North Carolina.

At least one chartered flight to Mexico City was grounded Thursday with an engine issue, leaving teams scrambling to find alternative routes to get to Mexico. Some drove to Atlanta to catch a commercial flight.

But when the track opened Friday, many were not at Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez. Trackhouse Racing was among them — Daniel Suarez arrived Tuesday with some support personnel so he was not affected — but the communications director for the Cup team had been summoned to help unload the Trackhouse cars off the truck because no crew members were available.

The trucks came directly from last Sunday’s race in Michigan and arrived at the Mexico City track on Thursday.

NASCAR said only “a select few” teams aren’t on site Friday morning. But, it seems most are Xfinity Series teams based on a revamping of the weekend schedule.

“Due to two aircraft issues that grounded multiple race teams in Charlotte, N.C., on Thursday, NASCAR has adjusted the on-track schedule for this weekend’s activities at Mexico City’s Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez,” NASCAR said in a statement.

NASCAR delayed Friday’s originally planned Cup Series practice to later in the afternoon. NASCAR also pushed all Xfinity Series practice sessions from Friday to Saturday. And, the first of two NASCAR Mexico Series races will run earlier than originally scheduled on Friday.

The Xfinity Series will lose some practice time, with just one 50-minute session on Saturday morning, right before qualifying. There are other slight adjustments as well, but Cup teams will not lose any practice.

The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Mexico City, and while the track brings its own excitement, the pit road is causing the teams to face a tricky challenge.

There’s a thing called ‘reverse pit stop’ in NASCAR. It’s not something fans get to see often in the Cup Series. In fact, the only other place on the schedule where it happens is at Watkins Glen. And now, Mexico City joins the club.

Hendrick Motorsports Changing the Game on Pit Road at Mexico City

Most NASCAR tracks/ovals have pit roads on the left side. Drivers enter with their left side against the wall, and pit crews are trained to jump off and perform their tasks in a very specific flow. But at Autodromo Hermanos Rodríguez, things change a little.

In Mexico City, the pit road entry will be on the right, meaning the right side of the car hugs the pit wall. That means, crews have to do everything they usually do, but in reverse order.

It might not sound like a big deal initially, but pit stops are all about timing and rhythm. Team crews spend hours practicing every movement to save fractions of a second. But suddenly everything’s reversed when the cars come in from the right. That’s where the challenge comes in.

Hendrick Motorsports (HMS), one of the top teams in the sport, is changing something in its roster before the weekend. NASCAR reporter Bob Pockrass informed fans on X that HMS had swapped the positions of its front and rear tire changers for the Mexico race. That way, even with the reversed pit stop, the changes could stick to its usual tires, just from the opposite direction.

Fuelers also face a challenging task. Their approach angle changes when the car’s right side is near the wall. Properly lining up the fuel can on the opposite side without spilling or losing time gets trickier.

Jumping off the wall to get to the car will be another task for which the crew will need ample practice. A sudden change in positioning could lead to early jumps and penalties.

History in the Making for NASCAR at Mexico City

There’s always pressure during a big race weekend, especially when NASCAR travels internationally. With this being the first points-paying Cup Series race outside the U.S. in decades, every team is looking for ways to stay sharp.

HMS’s roster tweak is a smart adjustment. Some teams prefer to keep changers in their regular spots and have them switch their usual positions on the car, which often leads to confusion. By swapping their positions entirely, HMS hopes to avoid that awkward transition.

Their small decision to flip their crew setup could make a big difference on Sunday.
